I suppose, but it could be argued that there's plenty of British-based sci-fi to go around these days.
What is missing is Sci-fi with a truly international scope. Doctor Who with its US-filmed episodes (and you just know there will be more) and now Torchwood provide that international scope. Yes, it's based in the US, but part of it is still set in the UK.
The only other option as I understand is that either Torchwood would have ended forever with the Children of Earth miniseries as the BBC wouldn't have continued it on its own. Or, worse, a fully remade Americanized version would have joined the ranks of Being Human, Life on Mars, etc. I've already seen a few people say they'd have preferred Torchwood have ended in 2009 rather that become "Americanized", but this hybrid that retains the core (surviving) characters from the earlier seasons, and maintains continuity with the first 3 years (and, even if unspoken, that means 48 years of Doctor Who as well) is the best compromise, and remembering there is continued pressure for an American-connected Doctor Who, it's also the best case scenario in that eventuality. A Doctor Who series filmed in Hollywood, yet still starring Matt Smith would be better than someone starting from scratch.
Regarding the trailer, is that Fox News' Bill O'Reilly at the end of the TV news "Miracle Day" quick montage?

I'm not sure how setting something largely in America (though parts take place in Wales and other countries too) counts as Americanising it anyway, given that the same people are in charge of making it.

I sure hope so, if nothing else than to counter the previous Whovian impression that America has exactly one news-caster and it's the black chick with the not-quite-right American accent. (yes, I know O'Reilly is not a newscaster)
They should have just put a Brit in there and sprayed American flags all over the screen for the Fox-look. We Americans like our news channels with a British accent and/or American flags all over the the screen so it would have been completely authentic.

They're all holding candles as if it were a vigil for the dead but due to the premise we can rule that out. A vigil for those that can't die?
Good idea! I rewatched it last summer too, but I haven't seen it yet on my flatscreen.
I've done a Torchwood catch up already. I'm psyched for Miracle Day.
