Green Lantern (2011)

I like the new trailer, but then, the weird extrasolar aspect of this movie is what's got my attention (although as said, the pretty affable superhero doesn't hurt). The mythology is a trifle goofy - the yellow power of fear? - but I'll roll with it.

Just another comic book movie.

It is, at that, but frankly, space opera geek, and beggars can't be choosers. If it takes Hollywood's current superhero trend is what's gonna get me another movie with strange aliens and weird alien planetscapes, well, I'm willing to consider it.

And if I don't care for it there's always the sequels to Avatar and Star Trek. I'll get by.

Why not? Yellow and fear go back a long way. When you are afraid, you turn yellow.

There's a difference between using yellow as a signifier for fear (it's been used as a metaphor for actually a huge amount of things, in no way consistent) and saying that it actually is yellow.

The latter is a trifle silly.

I mean to put that another way 'green' is often used as a signifier for death. I wouldn't talk about 'the green power of death', though.

E.E. Smith was a "pioneer," all right, but he's such a bad writer as to be just about unreadable.
He is pretty bad.

...but I still think someone could write a good Lensman movie.

Yeah...it's almost as if its based on a comic book...

Exactly - "four color logic."

There is no superhero who isn't entirely ridiculous to the skeptical viewer, and that includes the Goddamned Batman.

Did say I was rolling with it, mind.

Oh come now. Playing dress up as a flying mammal to single-handedly combat crime is an entirely plausible reaction to childhood trauma.

Is the green versus yellow conflict symbolic of the conflict between which color is considered primary in the color wheel? Or is it something along those lines?

In the Green Lantern mythos, each of the seven prismatic colors of light (green, yellow, blue, indigo, violet, orange, and red) represent a specific emotional or mental state. Green = determination or willpower; yellow = fear; blue = hope; indigo = compassion; violet = love; orange = avarice; red = hatred. As such there are seven corresponding "lanterns" and seven corps of ring-bearers, the Green Lantern Corps being one of these seven.

Has ROY G. BIV always been a part of the GL mythos, at least since the green versus yellow conflict was introduced? I remember green versus yellow since before I heard of Lanterns other than Green ones.

By the way, the point of my question was etymological as well as expository.

There is no conflict between which color is considered primary in the color wheel. All seven colors are more or less equal in power, as seen in the Lanterns' recent War of Light.

It was never really green versus yellow. Originally the green light was unable to influence anything yellow because of an impurity in the Central Power Battery. Later that impurity was explained to be the embodiment of fear, since wielders of the green were beings without fear.

It's only been in the last decade that the other five colors were given attributes as well. Now all seven possess Lantern Corps of their own.

Yeah, yellow was probably originally substituted for the original 1940s version of GL's weakness (inability to influence wooden objects) simply because it was easy to represent graphically in a comic book. It became associated specifically with evil/opposition to the Corps with the second comic book appearance of Sinestro and the introduction of his yellow power ring during the first year of the GL comic. Originally, Sinestro was already "fallen" when Jordan joined the Corps; their acquaintance as Lanterns with Sinestro serving as a mentor is a much later retcon.

Technically 9 white = life; black = death....just sayin..lol

Am so glad I am not a comic book fan because not knowing them in great detail allows me to just sit back and enjoy these movies without comparing them to comic book standards in terms of how they look, act out etc...

The trailers have really peaked my interest I like the concept of a thought based power and the movie just looks cool. I have to admit I prefer the likes of Batman for the fact he has no super power but watching Smallville lately and the whole Justic League angle the show contains has peaked my interest in super powered heroes again.
