The Flintstones is getting a remake... by Seth MacFarlane

So I guess all the stuff that was implicitly creepy and weird about the Flintstones is about to get explicitly spelled out. Ready for the can opener/pterodactyl to make rape jokes with all the subtlety of a bludgeon? Seth MacFarlane does not fucking care if you're ready. It's happening.

MacFarlane was fine when he was only doing one damn show. I think part of the problem with Family Guy when he brought it back was he was now splitting his efforts between two shows (American Dad) and now these days its three (The Cleveland Show). Now he's adding a fourth?

Yeah, I don't really care about a Flintstones remake one way or another but I do find it a little off-putting that it's probably not going to be anything but another diluted version of the same shit he always does, in this case "Stone Age Family Guy."

Whatever. Time to guess the cast. I'm guessing MacFarlane himself will be doing Fred, what other Family Guy Alum can we think of. Mike Henry (Cleveland, among others) is pretty much guaranteed. Might even be Barney.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him voice both Fred and Barney. Look at the multiple roles he plays on the existing shows.

Stone Wars,

The live action movie did have a Tar Wars joke. I'm serious.

Stone Age Family Guy indeed. I'm sure they'll have a field day coming up with Stone Age variations on jokes against black people and Arabs. I'm sure we're going to see caveman versions of Christians and Jews just so MacFarlane can remind us he hates religion. 1980s pop culture referance will litter the show.

Honestly, the point of my comment was just a derisive comment that MacFarlane works with the same voice actors on all his shows.

All of you are writing this off based on the assumption that he's going to "dirty up" The Flintstones. There's no indication that this is the case. In fact him being a fan of the original show points to him being true to the spirit of the show.

Of course I could be wrong, but I'm slightly curious about this.

Re: Hey, Fred, Remember that Time You...

this is his first time adapting a previously existing franchise, so his previous track record may not be a true predictor of performance.
It's a cartoon sitcom about a family headed by a somewhat oafish father figure.

This also describes all three Seth MacFarlane cartoons currently airing.

At most I'd bank on the Flinstones being a little tamer, assuming it wants to keep the family friendly vibe of the original cartoon.

But I'd also bank on the stone age references to the 1980s.

I think many of us are basing this on what he's done in the past, which is fair game. He could very well surprise us though, but part of me feels disappointed that it's even being done by him.

^ Sam Raimi's Spider-man, Peter jackson's Lord of The Rings - just two examples of film-makers making movies radically different and more family friendly from what they had previously been best known for.
