Should Torchwood tackle more "Who" monsters?

Whofan

Fleet Captain
So far they've dealt with a Cyber-woman, a creature very similar to the Beast (Abbadon) and a Hoix in the show, and of course in Doctor Who itself they fought the Daleks. I can't see them taking on some of the sillier monsters (Slitheen for example, can't see them working except on RTD's WHO and the now cancelled SJA), but what about say, the Silurians, Weeping Angels, Gelth etc? Silurians I could see working within the context of Torchwood, although they're not really 'aliens'....Weeping Angels could work out within Torchwood's darker format-and the Gelth are sort of how the rift storyline began in the first place! (Plus maybe have Gwen meet her lookalike distant relative?)

I think now its a Starz show we are going to see less and less connection to Doctor Who in Torchwood.

I agree. Unfortunately
I hope it doesn't become a totally fractured continuity though like K9. It would be nice if it kept the occasional references and appearances from the Dr Whoniverse.

Having said that. It would be interesting to see where a show could go. Whether a spin off from a new series, could continue, find its feet in another country, crossover with x-files or Fringe or something, reestablish itself again as an independent show then crossover with Dr Who again.

I would struggle to see this series in the same light as the K9 series, there are strong connections to the main Whoverse, but I do fear that US vieweres will get far more from it, than UK viewers, which some how does not seem right.

I think as long as they do "event mini-series" it's going to be hard to have Who crossovers. Otherwise, they could manage somehow.

Given what they did to Cybermen I'd rather they stayed far away from classic Who monsters...although it'd be kind funny to see Jack get all catty about the new Daleks.

"My, who ate all the pies. Yes, your bum does look big in that."

Although Torchwood would almost certainly encounter Who enemies, I do like how they've stood on their own without having to rely on Doctor Who as crutch.

I'm sure there's more than enough alien nasties out there to go round!

Torchwood could tackle the Autons pretty well, though "Sleeper" covered similar territory. The Silents would also work well on Torchwood.

Actually, it's not fractured, because it's established that the K-9 featured in that series is the original one that was left behind with Leela on Gallifrey, and he looks the same in the first episode until he "regenerates". They even kept Leeson's voice. And I understand the show takes place something like 50 years in the future, which they did in order to steer clear of Sarah Jane's time frame, as well as that of recent Doctor Who. Just because they don't spend their time talking about the Battle of Canary Wharf doesn't mean it didn't happen (then again, depending on one's interpretation of the events of The Big Bang, maybe it didn't happen...).

As for Torchwood, much as I'd like to see further connections to DW, I don't think it'll happen anymore, since Starz is calling the shots now and they won't want to connect to something a rival network is doing. Best we can hope for is maybe in Series 5 they'll be able to borrow Freema from Law & Order or finally get around to bringing in Noel Clarke as Mickey. But I'd say it's doubtful, not if they're able to snag big names like Francis Fisher to guest star.

I'm also of the opinion that it's probably the last we'll hear of Torchwood in Doctor Who too. Despite the stated desire to have Captain Jack meet Matt Smith, as long as Doctor Who is on BBC America and Torchwood is on Starz, it won't happen, regardless that both series share networks in the UK. It's a price to pay for the increased American influence on the show.

(Of course, having said all that, if next week or next year the BBC announces the great crossover, I'll be more than happy to eat my words as I'd love to see Nana Visitor squaring off against the Daleks!)

To be honest I haven't had much chance to see K9, but by fractured continuity, I'm referring to the very limited likelihood that any event in K9 will ever make a difference in Dr Who continuity, or that we'll see the same monsters, or even characters crossover. Much as I would like that.

I agree, we are unlikely to see Smith on Torchwood, but Captain Jack in the Tardis can't be ruled out entirely.

K9 on Torchwood perhaps?

Smith won't be on Torchwood for the same reason Tennant never was: they don't want the Doctor on an adult show. However, I would be very surprised if we never saw Captain Jack on Doctor Who again.
