A question: What does the expression "to be up in a gum tree" mean?
And is the expression "what´ll give you" really a used one (the whole sentences is: I know a respectable old gentleman what´ll give you lodgings for nothing.)... or should it not be "who will give you" or "that will give you"? Is there something like "who´ll" or "that´ll"?

A question: What does the expression "to be up in a gum tree" mean?
I'm not familiar with that one. 2 possible meanings I guess:
1) Dozing/ out of it. Koalas are usually asleep up a gum tree during daylight hours
2) Up sh*te creek. But I'm not sure.

what´ll give you" really a used one (the whole sentences is: I know a respectable old gentleman what´ll give you lodgings for nothing.)...

Bad grammar: It should be "who will/ who'll give you lodgings."

I believe it is a British dialectical form which would be 'who/that will give you' as you suggest. It sounds like something one might come across in Dickens, especially some street urchin or other poor/lower class character. Looking through Oliver Twist, it's the Artful Dodger speaking to Oliver in chapter 8. He's soon to be introduced to Fagin.

"To be up a gum tree" means that someone is at a loss,is having some difficulty or is stuck on some task. It seems that the term might have nothing to do with gum trees.

The term might come from the Gomti River in India. Some British soldiers were under seige there at some time i.e. They were stuck up the Gomti".

Well if your website in correct about the usage dates than my explanation can't be right because the term would predate the seige of Lucknow.

I can't vouch for the site, but I have heard 'up a tree' plenty of times. I hadn't heard up a gum tree before, but the site and that song- as well as possum references- make me think it possible it might have started as a southern US expression.

Ah thanks! I think the "in trouble" explanation might fit best. Cause the whole text would be:

"She was from the country, but now she's up a gumtree
She let a fellow feed her, and lead her along
What's the use of cryin', she made a bed to lie in
She's glad to bring a coin in, and join in this song."

So she would be in trouble for going with that guy
as it leads her to a lower class live (guess prostituting herself).

And Gov Kodos, you are exactly right. *L*
Its from the character of the Artful Dodger.
I´m impressed. You know the book by heart?
Though I didn´t take it out of the book, but from
one of the movies. Dodger is far more likeable in the movies,
than in the book.
