Netflix is thinking about bringing back cancelled TV shows

Hmm, my initial reaction is wouldn't they be better served by simply bringing out material that isn't available on DVD? Their rental or streaming numbers for something that is currently unavailable might be better. Even against any rights issues, that surely must be cheaper then entire set rebuilds, cast negations, effects houses, and all that hello comes with making a tv show!

If networks aren't doing any direct new content streaming for the web only type things (I think it might be a good way to keep soaps alive, one show per network to continue to develop your stock cast and crew companies) how could netflix do it better? It might be fun for netflix to have an ongoing show or channel where mini series or short films were made, but right now they should start a little more simply with at least maybe a media magazine show maybe?

Despite their rapid success I just can't see them not getting in a huge whole with something like this.

They wouldn't have to deal with any of that. They'd just work out a license fee with the studio that makes the show. The studio would have sets and cast contracts in place and it would be a matter of working out a license fee that made sense for both the studio and Netflix to continue a show a network had just cancelled.

I, too, would love to see a Firefly resurgence and a SGU continuation. Although I'm a little confused at the several posts about V - has it been canceled? I thought there simply hasn't been an announcement yet.

I think a 5th season of Star Trek Enterprise would be worth a look - would love to see what they would have done with the Kzinti and the Earth/Romulan War. However, I'm thinking that the suits at Paramount would never let it happen.

And dare I mention Caprica? I suspect that the new Blood & Chrome coming out next year will back-fill the events that occurred between C's finale up to the first Cylon War, but I guess I was one of the few that liked that show.

And yes, "The Cape" could also be done the justice it deserved.

Breaking out of SciFi, I'd love to see a continuation of Deadwood (another great show that ended too soon) and the oft-planned-but-too-cowardly-to-produce "The Preacher" that HBO almost picked up but never did.

V is not officially cancelled, it's just very likely. We should hear something very soon...upfronts are next week.

CBS are the suits who would never let it happen. Star Trek would be a great franchise for Netflix to use, if they were allowed. High profile, loyal and reasonably large fanbase. Are Netflix and CBS friendly? Or has Netflix and Showtime (part of CBS) been feuding? Can't recall who Netflix has been fighting with lately...

Difficult to say. Companies seem to be absorbing other companies faster than most people change underwear. Not sure who Netflix reports to at the moment. I can't believe that have no parent, but I've never heard of them having one, either. Don't really know.

All the other Trek series are coming to Netflix very soon. If they make a good showing there, it would make it easier to do future projects, though of course ENT has been off the air for over five years. I guess they could just pick up in the middle of the Romulan war with some 90 minute movies.

Netflix to resurrect The Event?

Talks are underway with at least one distribution partner to take over the serialized drama. The Event executive producer Steve Stark wouldn't comment, but I hear new original programming player Netflix's name tossed around. Word is that there has been interest from several cable and digital entities

Of all the shows that could be brought back, is this really the one we want? :rommie:

Netflix would be smarter to take over production of Wonder Woman, and amp up the lesbian subtext. Netflix doesn't have to worry about the FCC, right? ;)

NBC isn't interested in catering to the fanboys but that would be a smart strategy for Netflix.

Not until they discover that they're missing out on a huge cash cow once this thing grows legs. The one thing that the FedGov moves quickly on is an opportunity to generate free revenue vis à vis a few well-placed laws.

The way I see it, The Event could be used to test the waters and see if they should continue.

The Event would be a poor test case. If it flops, does that mean the Netflix model doesn't work or that nobody wanted it back? Ditto for V and SGU. Don't sabotage things right out of the gate!

They should do something with maximum cult-audience potential. Wonder Woman, with amped up lesbian overtones would be an excellent trial balloon. If that flops, it's Netflix's fault! :rommie:

I rather Netflix Picks up Chicago Code and Fringe when it gets canceled. I thnik those shows will work well for them

The Event is a mess.

I think Fringe would do well on Netflix. The Event would be a waste of their time.

Exactly. Fringe has a loyal fanbase and pretty damn great DVRing numbers that double the Friday night ratings. The Event has nosedived right from the beginning. Hell I think V would do better than The Event on Netflix.

I wouldn't be surprised if every canceled show gets a "maybe Netflix will" story going forward. Wither they actually are, or not, doesn't matter. It's all about getting the eyes on the story that day.

Worst choice of a show to resurrect ever, but I guess the probably relatively cheap budget and lack of elaborate sets might play a part in that. Judging by the commentary threads, I think most of the people that watch it do so out of force of habit because it's sort of scifi-ish and not because they like it all that much. That show was pretty much dead on arrival once people saw how bad the writing was (same with V, IMO), and has been lucky to get as far as it has already.
