Another Voyager 1st-time watch thread

Thanks for the kind wishes, everyone. I will probably post a pic when I get them uploaded from my phone. I'm probably going to set up a private photo-sharing account for family and friends to check them out. I've got a flickr account right now but it's work stuff. Anyone have any suggestions on the best service to use? I guess I could just use another flickr account.

Oh, and did anyone guess which scene from "Inside Man" was the one I thought was the best ever?

I completely forgot everything this episode was about, so I had to read about it on MA to refresh my memory. So now I can give you the inside scoop on...

"Inside Man"

They've got mail, and it's a hologram. Because what this show needed was more Barclay.

Interesting idea, and Dwight Schultz's take on a confident (and devious) hologram is fun to watch. I groaned when Troi showed up, just because it fees like they're painting by numbers here by pairing Schultz and Troi for a third time post-TNG.

Here's what I would have done to freshen things up: scratch Troi, bring in Sonya Gomez as a fellow engineer who helps Barclay work through some of his issues. Because I think a lot of fans would have liked to see more of her.

Anyway, the Ferengi scene is what convinced me that, "this episode just took a dump on us." I am not a fan of the Ferengi on any level. And they're plan--to conduct a ground-breaking feat of intergalactic travel just to sell Seven for parts--doesn't seem that well thought-out.

Life-of-the-party Reg, however, is pretty funny. My favorite moment was the Janeway impersonation, complete with hand on hip! If he'd have worked in the dismissive hand-wave, this would have been the best episode ever.

Also nice to see the Doctor as the suspicious one here. And Real Barclay's ex-"girlfriend" was a funny little touch. Poor guy can't catch a break.

Was that beach scene filmed at the same place they filmed the end of Planet of the Apes? Looked pretty familiar.

The episode had some fun moments mixed with some awful ones. Interested to hear what other people think.

I think when they start bring in too many elements from the Alpha Quaderent into the show, they've run out of ideas.

Another waste of an ep. that could have been better used to wrap up story arcs or been used as a follow up to the Vadwaar.

I agree with all this, pretty much. I only liked the Ferengi in DS9. Definitely sick of the Barclay-Troi connection by now, but mostly Troi because she's kind of annoying on VOY. I actually liked her much of the time on TNG,though.

There were some pretty funny moments with Barclay here (the Janeway impersonation being the best), but not enough to waste a whole episode when there were plenty of other plot threads to pick up, develop, and wrap up.

But I also didn`t like Troi in TNG.

I wouldn't have minded them going back to the AQ if they had done something new there.

Things have settled down a bit and I might be back to watching Voyager soon.

T.D., are you doing a thread about your Doctor Who watching anywhere? I'm a long-time fan and I'd love hear about the show through someone who's just discovering it. The DW forum can be a little prickly so I don't go there as often as I should.

No, I'm not doing a Who thread anywhere. Honestly, writing detailed, thoughtful reviews like yours is a time commitment I'm not willing to undertake. And I'm really not sure where I could find a home for the sort of reviews I am willing to write, such as:

"Today I watched a reconstruction of "Galaxy 4". I miss Ian and Barbara. Steven sucks. I am glad they lost this episode. Those aliens look like the Daleks, only with life jackets. Is it time for the Third Doctor yet? OH, and I've taken to wearing my hair in pigtails like Vicki, but only around the house. I hope I don't forget and go out in public like this."

Yes, doing a watch thread is a surprising amount of work. There's a thread over there for "Stories You've Watched Recently" that I contribute to sometimes where you can do those quick hit reactions.

So are you working your way through chronologically from Hartnell onwards?

Wow. Having discovered the show as a little kid when it was on PBS (early 1980s), I think my order was 4/3/4/5 (they repeated a lot of them). I didn't pick it up again until a few years ago.

After being really disappointed by the 5/6/7 episodes I've seen, I thought I knocked them off my Netflix queue, but I got Attack of the Cybermen (a 6 one) in the mail today.

Yes, my previous Who experience was also the 1980s PBS reruns. I barely remember anything that happened in them, but I remember clearly how much I loved watching them. I thought about rewatching the whole shebang for quite some time before I committed to doing it. I'm glad I decided to take the plunge, though.

I've heard others say that late Five, and Six and Seven are a rough stretch. I do recommend One, though. Some of the stories are slooooooow in pace, but Hartnell was truly a jewel, and I'm wild about Barbara, original companion and early example of an "Action Girl". Also, I have a deep and abiding enthusiasm for cardboard sets and alien costumes made from chicken wire and shower curtains.

I love "The Web Planet," where the guy in Zarbi costume runs into the camera, and it made it on air! It really had the feel of some kind of experimental televised theater. The low fi vibe is quite endearing.

I've liked the Hartnells and Troughtons I've seen, though, as you've mentioned, the pace is slow.
