River as the companion?

At some point River is going to have to be the companion with the Doctor, I mean to know everything she knows about the TARDIS and whatnot, she's going to have to spent a lot of time with him. However, how are they going to show a younger version of her, while the actress is getting older? Eventually they'll have to have a younger River be the companion with the Doctor, he'll meet a younger version of her that doesn't know who he is.

I don't think we ever will see River as a full time companion, I think we just need to accept they have lots of off screen adventures together (which to be honest is what I imagined after the Library 2 parter, I never actually expected to see River again--so I could be wrong here!)

^ I tend to agree. I don't think that we'll see River as a full time companion with the Doctor future incarnation or otherwise. I don't really think that is what Moffat intended when he created her in the first place. I believe he created her to be a Future Companion to confound the Doctor and create an unusual dynamic that viewers have never seen before in Who. It would be interesting to see if we ever get to see their first chronological meeting but I doubt that as well.

Even if they don't show her as a companion, at some point, he's going to meet a younger River. If they ever show that, they'd have to do it soon cause the actress is only getting older.

River will probably show up several times this season (2 already) and several times next year. I would assume her adventures would end when Moffat walks away from Who.

I would imagine we'll see River at the mid season finale at least, and then probably at the end of the season as well. It only makes sense, though who knows.

I'd love for her to become a full time companion, even in season 7.

I'm actually surprised how well having three "companions" in the TARDIS works.

It may take the Doctor 1000 years to rack up all his adventures with River, but, that could easily translate to only 5 years of River's life (excluding the "Young Girl" line, which may or may not be taken literally). If the "Young Girl" s to be taken literally, of course she'll have to spend at least 1 episode recast as a young girl. But, for the rest of it, I don't see a problem, Alex Kingston isn't that old, and she shouldn't be visibly aging in the next year or two.

I'm just curious why Brent thinks there would have to be a younger actress to play River? That assumes that the Doctor met her and has known her for a decade or so. We know nothing about their adventures together let alone how old River was when she first met him.

I think that's going to be the case, because it's much better for them to talk about meeting Bob the Fish, for example, than for us to ever actually see the encounter. Plus the Weeping Angels story indicates that River is aware of the Doctor's other incarnations, and for all we know that might indicate an 11 Doctors scenario, which would be impossible to pull off on TV.

(Spoiler ahead for Impossible Astronaut): all we know for certain is that the "get acquainted" era of their relationship has been narrowed down to the Eleventh Doctor, at some point between 909 and 1100-whatever.

I just hope the relationship really did happen and it isn't some sort of "all in their mind" type of thing (I'm remember how the Doctor experienced his entire life in The Family of Blood and how Donna got a family life in Forest of the Dead).

Well yeah. That was announced months ago, and was even discussed here right after the announcement.

River will be a recurring character this year, and next year will be a regular, with Amy and Rory, and she'll be in all 13 episodes. If they said anything about the Christmas special, I don't remember it.

Cuz da mod asked me to tag it.

Where has this been announced?

Do a search. I doubt the thread's been pruned.

OmahaStar, if that's true, put it in spoiler tags. I don't get the complete and total willingness to reveal major plot events a year in advance to everyone who casually reads this forum.

Can't find it - anyone?

I remember it being mentioned as a possibility, but nothing firm was announced. If this is true then I'm thrilled! :techman:

I don't think it is. I recall reading an interview where Moffat said he'd like it, but securing Kingston's availability in the UK for the duration of filming needed would likely be a big sticking point.

According to our source, Steven Moffat has been having 'secret' meetings with Alex and her agent about bringing her into the show full time for series 7. Alex, who loves working on the show has apparantly taken some persuading. Not because she wouldnt love the job, but because spending 9 months filming in the UK is a big commitment when she lives so far away.

It seems that Moffat though would have the gift of the gab, because earlier this week her Californian home was put up for sale and her team was said to be looking for a a base for her in Cardiff Bay, near to where the show is filmed.

Obviously if all this is true, then it will be a while before the BBC confirms anything, and as always we want to point out that this can only be treated as speculation for the time being, but it would certainly seem that we will be seeing a lot more of River Song in the future.
