Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watch?

One of the villains on Justice League had a headpiece like that.

I woke up early enough so I could decide not to watch parasites get hitched.
The sooner we dump these scroungers and get an elected head of state the better. Good to see this wedding was smaller than Chaz and di the next will be smaller as they continue to be less and less important. We paid for the wedding I guess we will have to pay for the divorce too...

One of the things I like about constitutional monarchy is that the Head of State is above the back stabbing bitter partisan politice we have in the US.

God save the Queen!!
God Bless The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!!

Looked like Kate's jaw was a bit tense during the vows. It also looked like she almost messed up William's name.

She looked nervous walking down the aisle. She was a bit tense during the vows, but that was trying to be perfect. She had a lot of pressure since everyone compares her to Princess Diana. Supposedly two billion people around the world were listening and wondering if she was going to mess up the vows like Di.

I watched the BBC America channel this morning for the live version and it didn't seem like there were too many references to Diana. However, my mother DVRed the ABC channel and we're watching it now and I think they're talking more about the 1981 wedding more than the one today. It's kind of annoying, actually.

I woke up early enough (hey 11 is early for me!) to watch proceedings from the Royal Family's arrival at the Abbey until the end of the ceremony, though was busy making a cup of tea during part of the exchanging of vows.

All in all quite good fun.

The Good

- Some nice fashions on display. Zara Phillips, Sam Cam, and Kate Middleton's mother were my favourites, though almost everyone did pretty well. Even the Elton John, David Furnish and David & Victoria Beckhams of the world managed to dress reasonably well (ie didn't try upstage the royals). A fun display of hats too. I thought Kate's dress was quite splendid; very elegant with the long full veil giving it an ironic touch of the nunnery. Quite cheeky in its own way; quite an appropriate contribution to a modern royal wedding from the house of the late Alexander McQueen.
- The couple seem genuinely happy and excited, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves with the kind of nervous banter that's familiar to any wedding.
- the sun came out for the carriage ride back to the palace, which was a lovely touch. - the kiss of the balcony was nice too.
- the RAF fly-past seemed pretty low over the palace, and looked appropriately nostalgic.

The Bad

- ferrying the foreign/minor royalty in executive minibuses. I lol'ed, along with Simon Schama who was unlucky enough to be commentating on air at the time.
- Princess Eugenie needs to avoid dresses with padded shoulders. David Cameron (and several others) need to hem their trousers a bit shorter.

The Not So Much Ugly, As From a Parallel Universe...

I didn't have to watch it as I knew I could just read Holdfast's post in the morning and be satisfied.

Mission accomplished. :)

Being a staunch monarchist I was annoyed with Barbara Walters.

[One of the things that drove me nuts was Barbara Walters kept referring to HRH The Duchess of Cornwall as Camilla Parker-Bowles!!

It is bad enough that we don't call her the Princess of Wales but to refer to her as if she has no title at all did bother me.

Plus after it was announced that Catherine would be known as HRH The Duchess of Cambridge Barbara Walters said "oh we'll still call her Princess Kate." Grrr

I am a bit of a stickler for the correct usage of titles and incorrect usage of titles bugs me.

On a positive note the ABC coverage did show many foreign royals coming in (King and Queen of Norway, The Duke and Duchess of Brabant, The Prince and Princess of the Asturias, The Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima. Although they showed them coming in they didn't mention it on TV.

Just caught highlights on news. Holdfast as always is spot on with analysis of good and bad.

Dress looked a corker (nice to see McQueen brand getting even bigger int'l exposure); pomp will be a good ad for UK tourism and Olympics.

LOL'd at comments on UK forums that some of guest hats looked like something from DS9 :)

But the Aston Martin 'Austin Powers' moment was GENIUS! Talk about putting a marker down...

I missed the part where William & Kate drove away from Buckingham Palace. Did their car really have balloons on it or is that pic photoshopped?

That's genuine, Ro. No one expected it...which is what makes it such a 'blinder' moment

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

the new bride is to be correctly addressed as "Her/Your Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cambridge".

William is a Baron, a Duke, an Earl and Prince all in one.

or, you can go with Captain (his Army rank) or Flight Lef-tenant (his RAF rank)...

since, apparently, Princes don't have surnames and use the location of their title as their surname, does this mean he goes from being Flt. Lt. Wales to Flt. Lt. Cambridge?

Nope - that was the real deal! William was driving, and the car - an Aston Martin DB6 that Prince Charles bought in 1969 and had converted to biofuel a few years ago - also had an L (learner's) tag on the front! It was a lot of fun! One of the channels was speculating that Prince Harry had something to do with some element of the car - either the balloons or the L plate! (I think it's probably the L plate - I mean, William is a trained pilot for heaven's sake! Mind you, it is Charles' car ...)

But it was a really pleasant surprise moment for those who hung about after the balcony, and as someone mentioned it was yet another sign that William and Catherine won't be "business as usual" in terms of royalty. And yes I remember they said the same about Charles and Diana. But I get the feeling this is going to be a bit different. Or at least a lot more fun.

Answering the original question of the thread, I couldn't get up early enough for the vows (I'm in Alberta where all that started at about 4 AM) but I caught the end of the service and saw the balcony. I actually missed the Aston Martin part until I saw it featured on CNN.

Yeah, that was great. I didn't see it live, but caught it on the news a bit later. Very funny touch. I love that.

it was a Volante, not a DB6...

Volante just means it's a rag-top, I think. It's a DB6. Back at school, I remember a friend's dad used to have a Vantage Volante. He sometimes "borrowed" it for a ride...

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

I didn't really care much about this or watch any footage, but I admit I enjoyed looking at galleries displaying the hats worn. Lovely!

Me too - I never bother watching events like this, or the red carpet at the Oscars, but I love the photos afterwards.

btw - I was reading about the Queen Mother on wiki last night and it told about how she lay her bouquet on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Abbey. The article says that all royal brides since then have also done it.

Does anyone who watched the ceremony know if Kate did it? And if she did, did she lay her bouquet on the tomb on her way in or her way out?

thank you! :)
