Today show to visit Doctor Who; Meredith Vieira to cameo

In this case, neither is obscure.

Maybe, maybe not. To me though, when I saw Today, I thought it was going to be the BBC Radio Four morning news programme, the Today Programme. So guess what buddy, to me, they are both very obscure.

I'm sure to many Americans Blue Peter is pretty obscure too.
Nah, there's still some Virginal Teenage girls in the USA...Oh, you were talking about a host of something, weren't you?

LOL!! Blue Peter is sort of a Today show for kids.

Dimesdan, you're still missing the point. This is not the equivalent of someone in British media cameoing in Doctor Who. This is the equivalent of a major British media personality cameoing in, say, House.

I'm surprised Hugh hasn't offered the teet full of American dollars to most of his friends.

She's two years older than my mother, but golly Meredith is pretty.

She is a constant target of light hearted attacks from Joel McHale on The Soup.

Meredeth better not be stealing time from my beloved Trinity Welles is all I am thinking now though.

Like when Stephen Fry cameoed in 'Bones', perhaps? Can't recall much of a fuss about that, either.

Yes I know, but when has there ever been a thread here about it being on Blue Peter or Newsround or any other programme.

There are threads about Doctor Who's representation in the British media all the time.

is there? then happily prove me wrong. Unless you're thinking of review threads from the press which really isn't the same thing now is it.

It's cute that you're getting all defensive over such a trivial matter.

Mr Awe

Yeah, this thread is strange. There have been plenty threads for cameos from British personalities. Richard Dawkins, that newscaster from AoL, all of those folks who appeared in Army of Ghosts...

I suspect that I've fallen prey to a wind-up.

More Americans have heard of Meredith Viera than Doctor Who. That's why this makes sense PR-wise. Obviously, they're making a big push to get Doctor Who beyond obscure-cult status or at the very least, push the ratings up and make more money. They'll always be handicapped by being on BBC America, which isn't a standard basic-cable station so people should moderate their expectations accordingly.

All this hooplah is interesting from an entertainment business perspective. They're doing all the right things, so why should anyone complain?

Of all the things someone's ego can be threatened by, the Today show wasn't on the top of my list! :rommie:

I never heard of Meredith Vieira.
She's never heard of you either.
Obviously she worked much harder than me to get a similar result.

I'd be more impressed if you made the same salary as she did last year. (And if so, can I borrow a few hundred thousand and pay you back next week?)

So is this just a side effect of the Today Show already being in England for the Royal Wedding or was this pre-planned?

Ever Seen "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". Regis is the male host, Meredith is the female host.
If his Location is accurate Mirrorball Man is in Switzerland. Not sure if he would be watching an American game show. He mightr have watched Wer wird Millionär?, which was not hosted by Meredith Vieira. ;)

Oops, I mistakenly aimed that reply at you :alienblush:

I will happily support any opportunity that means someone that was on 30 Rock is also in Doctor Who (Brian Williams, we're coming for you next!).

To naysayers: Just because we're not aware of someone doesn't mean they're not popular.

Meredith Viera is a really random person to choose for a cameo. My only thought is, "Why?"

Because she's one of the two main anchors of the Today Show, a program that's almost always beaten its morning competitors for the past sixteen years in the US and counting. If it wasn't her, it probably would've been Matt Lauer. It's also an exchange: Vieira will cameo, and the Today Show will run some sort of piece on the show, requiring a visit to the set. The Today Show tends to try to be more international (at least in terms of content) than its competitors.

No one else cares about the Royal Wedding angle? Okay. Noted.

Actually, Meredith was interviewed today by BBC news/Breakfast about her presence here for that. I thought "I wonder if they're trying to make sure we know who she is for Doctor Who?"
