Today show to visit Doctor Who; Meredith Vieira to cameo

Doctor Who is of course no stranger to guest stars, as the article attests. Plus this is more evidence of WHO's growing popularity in America (Kind of cool that BBC America is really pushing the show-The "Trust Your Doctor" thing is everywhere!).

Presumabely the cameo will be in season 7/season 6 part 2 or whatever they're calling the Fall block of stories, since that's what's been filming now.

It's probably old hat to those in the UK but it's kind of fun when we get these odd little US things because its so uncommon.

Yes it really is. Kinda cute you colonials get all excited when some obscure presenter on an obscure programme is being cameoed though.

In this case, neither is obscure.

Maybe, maybe not. To me though, when I saw Today, I thought it was going to be the BBC Radio Four morning news programme, the Today Programme. So guess what buddy, to me, they are both very obscure.

I don't know if Meredith has a lot of cameo appeal to genre fans but maybe the mainstream appeal of her and Today might bring some new curious onlookers into the fold.

Yes, but The Today Show is not obscure to Americans, which is why American Doctor Who fans are excited to see that a show that had previously been obscure in America is starting to reach such a level of success and popularity that a big name like Viera would appear on it.

In other words, it's just a sign that the show we both love is successful and has a growing audience in America. Surely that's good for Whovians on both sides of the Atlantic? :)

and you couldn't have said that in fewer words? :p

Yes I know, but when has there ever been a thread here about it being on Blue Peter or Newsround or any other programme. It never happens, so it is cute that you get all excited about it showing up on what is I guess an early morning news programme.

Because we all already knew that Doctor Who was popular enough to attract them. That Doctor Who is now attracting cameos from major names in America is evidence of even greater success than it had before. Just like you'd be more excited to get a raise than to maintain your previous salary, an American Who fan would be more excited to hear that Today is doing a Doctor Who bit than Blue Peter.

It never happens, so it is cute that you get all excited about it showing up on what is I guess an early morning news programme.

It's a morning news and talk show that premired in 1952 and regularly attracts an audience of around 5 million people. It's big news for it to promote Doctor Who.

There are threads about Doctor Who's representation in the British media all the time.

is there? then happily prove me wrong. Unless you're thinking of review threads from the press which really isn't the same thing now is it.

^ I'm not sure if we're getting our wires crossed, or you are perhaps new to this forum, but threads about DW in the UK media have been common here for as long as this forum has been around- Blue Peter competitions, cameos from various celebrities, DW actors making media appearances, set visits, news stories, etc. Hell, people post and comment when celebrities or writers give their opinion of the series. And it's a British show. It's common for it to be present in the British media. You should have been here when the show came back in '05! Threads about DW in the British media were ubiquitous!

It certainly isn't surprising that American fans are tickled to see the show becoming a slightly larger part of our pop culture. All fans should be, it means the show is growing in worldwide popularity.

He's not new to the forum, as he's a commodore, but I think that he just doesn't get it.

I'm an American and if you didn't put a name caption under her image, I wouldn't know who Merideth Viera was.
Now, Graham Norton or Jeremy Clarkson on the other hand...

Then find a similar thread, one where it says that some obscure TV personality will be appearing on Doctor Who and they in turn will be doing a set visit and I will happily be proven wrong.

And no wires crossed in the first place, I'm sure you were referring to threads about press reviews and the like, and I still am. I know they exist because I created one when the press evening occurred a few weeks ago. But a similar one to this, I'd bet real money there arn't any.

Dimesdan, you're still missing the point. This is not the equivalent of someone in British media cameoing in Doctor Who. This is the equivalent of a major British media personality cameoing in, say, House.

Meredith Vieira may not be a big movie star or television actress, but she is watched by roughly six million Americans every weekday. For her to cameo on Doctor Who says more about the show's bigger than ever popularity in the U.S. than anything else.

I'm sure to many Americans Blue Peter is pretty obscure too.
