Being Erica - Season 4

Interesting. Thanks for posting, Worf :) Lighter tone? I hope it won't be too light, because what made me appreciate Being Erica was in how it handled tough subjects. exploring them in ways I hadn't seen done. But if they're more in line with what we saw when Erica was drunk and at the gay pride parade, then it should be fun.

Hmm, Erica's first patient is someone she already knows. Two sentences drew a lot of my attention.

"Erica will be revisiting the most loved characters from the first three seasons.”

"We’re going to see Julianne in ways we’ve never seen her before. We’re going to explore her life, the ways in which she is unfulfilled in her life"

:wtf: Is it me, or does it sound like Julianne is going to be Erica's first patient? My memory's failing me, but wasn't there an episode when Erica bumped into Julianne at her University in the past? That would make it easy to showcase Erica's friends using Julianne time traveling.

You can't have a Being Erica thread without giving people a look at the title character, so...

Can't wait to see what promo pics they put out this season.

Moving on... I was going to avoid spoilers for season 4 since I want to go in surprised, but I broke down and read the article and I'll probably check out more stuff if it pops up. I won't go looking for anything though.

A few things caught my attention...

1) More comedy: Not thrilled with having more lightheartedness than they already do, but I'm willing to wait and see what they do.

2) Everything will be tied up: Excellent that this show will be getting a propper wrap-up.

3) Things will start off with Adam: Sounds like the relationship will end. Good. Don't like them together.

4) Erica's first patient: I was thinking in the last few weeks that the gloved one wasn't the patient she's supposed to meet. Looks like he is though. I thought they were going to pull a fake-out and open the new season with this person just being someone Erica knows and just happened to bump into.

5) The magic won't be fully explained: This time/interdimentional travel stuff has become a major point of interest for me. Being able to move throughout the universe to different times and realities, including matrix-like environments, and to basically teleport anywhere by willing a door to open for you is pretty damn cool. I never expected them to fully explain it all, but I look forward to seeing more as well as how Erica makes use of this new power. It'll be a real treat if Erica misuses this power in some way. I hope they go there.

6) Dr. Tom's life: I look forward to seeing what becomes of him and wonder if he'll be getting into a bit of trouble with his superiors because of his personal issues as well as the rule-bending he's engaged in.

7) Dr. Erica: I look forward to seeing how the life of a doctor works by seeing how Erica will balance both lives. I'm also looking forward to seeing if she stays a doctor or gives it all up in the end. Or maybe she'll move on to something else we haven't figured on yet. Afterall, she's missing in the future and Drs Naadia and Arthur seem to have plans for her.

I'm just now hearing about this series again since it first premiered several years ago.

The premise has me intrigued to be frank, and I'd like to ask for those that have seen it how you would describe it?

Serious? Soapy? Saccharin?

I'm looking for another good series that blends fantastic elements with good characterization and plotting.

Would this be a series to try?

The first 2 or 3 episodes of the first season are pretty bad, frankly. They feel very juvenile. But then, something happens - it's an episode about Erica on the first day of a new job at a publisher's, and the show suddenly takes off. My reason for telling you this is, if you give the show a try, don't worry about the first 2 or 3 episodes. I promise it gets much better, and quite quickly.

How would I describe it? It's a science-fiction (fantasy?) show with a very strong female character at the centre. She's complex, courageous, vulnerable, intelligent - really, I haven't seen a female character this well-acted and well-written in a science fiction show for a while.

When the show is funny, it's often laugh-out-loud funny. When it's sad, it can make you cry. And sometimes, at its best, it's tense as hell, real edge-of-your-seat drama. It usually feels very real, with real people facing real problems. As an sf show that is drama-focused, it's truly fantastic....for the first 2 seasons. The third season, to be honest, drifts a bit, and that's mainly because it drops most of the major plot lines that kept the tension in the first 2 seasons so tight. But still, the show as a whole is one of the better ones of its type. (Oh, and you'll have to ignore the horrendous acting from her male best friend/potential love interest. The producers eventually realized he was awful and did something about it, but for the first season or so, you'll have to deal with it. Don't worry - he's not a hugely important character, screen-time-wise.)

My only real complaint about the show is that it seems, so far, uninterested in its own sf premise. It cares very much for the characters and their lives, but not so much for the science (or magic?) behind the doctors, what their motivation is, why they get involved in people's lives, etc....I hope they spend some time in the last season focusing on it, but they probably won't.

Other than that (and it's a personal preference), this show is highly recommended. It's thoughtful, mature, very adult, very smart, and very entertaining.

And for anyone who's serious about giving this show a try, this has to be emphasized... Start at the beginning. Don't sample a few episodes or jump in part way through. The show does follow a story. It's not as episodic as it looks.

What Ubik said. It's a very well-written show, and Erica is a fantastically well-rounded character (played by a well-rounded actress *cough*). My only real complaint about the show is that it does come off as very obviously written for female audiences on occasion. That's not a bad thing, though, given the minimal amount of strong, relatable female characters in both SF and fiction in general, but there's usually a couple of scenes every season that come off as a bit much, at least to me. But it's a pretty minor complaint, really, and the show is well-worth watching.

Forgot about this...

...every doctor needs an office, and Erica's will evolve into something that’s more reflective of who she is. "She ultimately settles on something that is quite different," while keeping one element from the original design...
I hope that the ugly egg-shaped chair isn't the one element she keeps. That's the one thing I want her to get rid of. :rommie:

I wouldn't call it soapy, as that would just cheapen it, which is why I feel it doesn't quite deserve to be on Soapnet as people look at that and get the wrong impression. When you look at things though, every good show has drama, and this has it in spades. It can be serious and it can be saccharine depending on its moments, which it balances well. Definitely one of the best written shows on TV these days, and it has a certain depth to it that I haven't seen in other shows. It can even be racy at times, a bit more than what would be allowed on US network TV. Overall, it's a well-rounded show.

As for season 4, I see they're hinting at it perhaps being Julianne, but is Julianne taller than her? It looked to me like the person she bumped into was on some steps which made her look up.

Erin Karpluk is an amazing actress. Whoever plays her role in the UK and American versions will have big shoes to fill.

Cool, I'll be giving this show a shot as soon as I can locate the episodes.

Just stumbled upon the fantastic, dark, & funny Being Human (The Original British Version) and Frell that was some great Television.

Looking forward to another good series.

Just based on the premise alone, Being Erica reminds me a lot of Early Edition featuring a fantastic premise that is played with but never explained in detail.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I think the first time I felt the show took off for me was in Season 1 when she went back to her university days where her Literature professor was never pleased with what she'd write and was downright nasty and mean to her, only to recite a popular song (as yet to be heard) as a poem and having him say it was the best thing he'd ever heard in his life. I thought it was a hilarious and brilliant moment in television.

Do you mean the poetry professor? I was never a Britney Spears fan and I did not realize Erica was reciting "Hit Me Baby One More Time". The intro music started playing and suddenly it just clicked and I :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

That's the precise episode I mentioned - the one where she first starts to work at the publisher's. See - I was right. That IS the episode where the show first takes off.

Yeah, that's the one. I thought it was brilliant!
