Well, I've pretty much decided that I suck at this game. First mission I do, the one where you save the Azura Blue, I can't beat the Orion marauders. Got my ass kicked soundly three times. How do you beat them? It was me and two other guys against around 30 ships!!!

So I tried the Patrol Vulcan System. Went into the Kei sector first. Same thing. Got my ass kicked. :(

There has to be something I'm missing.
Are you on normal? Because just putting your weapons on autofire and sitting there should be enough to beat those raiders. They are really weak enemies.

EDIT also don't use full impulse anywhere near enemies

Yeah I'm on normal. Weird. Why can't I beat them? I just gave up and went exploring. I'm on Memory Alpha right now, pissing around with the Ferengi.

Freman72 is the account, Freman is the character (Or is it Mr_Freman? It's one of those two lol).

I'll log on now and you can add me as a friend, but I have to go to work right away.

I knew my problem with this game was going to be the space battles. Does anyone know any Foundry land missions I can try out?

Neither worked. perhaps you better send me a mail in game: just sent it to @Timelord_Victorious.
No toon name needed for a mail.

Will do.

May seem like a stupid question, but how do you allocate your power? If you haven't changed the "factory preset" that might explain why you don't do enough damage.
You're on a balanced setting then.
Pick the attack preset, that gives full power to weapons, some decent shield power and low engine and aux power. Those last two are more effective if you fly a support or healer ship in a group.

I had better luck with the shield preset personally. But different people have different and equally valid strategies.

Are you am Engineer, Tac or Science? Which bridge officer did you pick?

Some advice on this from an old hand:

If you're Engineering or Science, take a Tactical as your first boff. If you're Tactical, it's sort of six of one and half a dozen of the other, but Science is marginally better since they'll help you keep your shields up.

All of this assumes you don't have all the goodies that give you a Liberated Borg Engineer and a Holographic Science immediately, in which case take a Tactical no matter what you are.

Actually, the Bolian Engineer has Emergency Power to shields I think. The Vulcan Science has Tachyon Beam, which is a shield debuff on your enemy (works best with power to Aux).
Oh do I misremember here?

It's possible you remember better than me, since as we've previously established my memory is crap due to untreated adult ADD.

However, I was thinking more long term; Science Team is the best shield buff at lower levels. EPS is surely nice though, especially EPS III.

So I'm trying to do the Rescue the Defari Captives mission, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to hail the damn Breen. Do you have to be a certain rank to do this mission?

lol ah well. I'm done all the other Diplomatic Missions. guess I'll go do something else.

If you're trying to play clear through this game without engaging in combat, you are going to be bored and angry, it's only beginning to support that style of play.

However, if you insist on that, the only recourse you have is to go do Exploration missions, and don't accept the initial dialog from your crew if it looks like it's going to be combat. Read both the dialog and the mission blurb that pops up on your mission display (below the minimap), and unless it's Scan Anomalies or Aid the Planet, there's a risk of combat.

If it tells you to fly to the planet and scan for something, it's possible there will be no combat, but it's likely there will be ground combat. There won't be space. If you don't like the look, don't click through the dialog; just warp out.

You can level up this way, just like you can paint a house with a piece of yarn.

No worries. I just have to catch him online sometime, then I can teach him a thing or two. I'm online right now, with a fresh toon roughly on the same level.

I'm not trying to avoid combat, especially not ground combat. Bring that on!!! I'm just trying to ease myself in to the space combat. I kind of suck at it right now. lol

T-V. where were you an hour ago? lol I'm on my way to bed now.

Ah. Same advice and caveats apply, then; this game is about 70% space combat.

Hit Exploration clusters, and read the mission text carefully. In general, if it's asking you to go to a planet, there's no space combat. If it's asking you to go to a base, it really depends on the text. You can always accept the dialog, fly to the base, and then if people contact you they'll tell you what their problem is. If they mention anything about being attacked, you're about to be asked to defend them against ships. Don't respond to the dialog, just warp out, then hit "J", find the mission with a long planet name in it, and drop it. There's no penalty for dropping it.

If they tell you they want you to beam down and deal with a problem, you're not going to have space combat. In missions they'll often start with ground and move to space, but in Exploration clusters if you start with ground you don't generally move to space.

If it was me, I'd hit Fleet Actions and do nothing but space combat until I sucked less, but you CAN avoid it with some care. It'll be boring though, all the best storyline missions have some space combat. Generally about 60/40.

Online I guess. Unless you checked the one half hour I was away.
Just take a look on the fleet roster to see who is online.

The new LT science ship, Oberth class, is cool. Now all starting careers have a specialty ship available.

All my toons are above LT rank, but I took the ship for the Enhanced Plasma Manifold console.
