Lack of Dr. Blake in Thor Film

Honestly, Don Blake hasn't been part of the comics for decades now...

Actually, JMS brought back Blake at the begining of his run and he is still around.
Yeah. The only story I'm familiar with was the JMS run. I did like his humanity.

I always got a kick out of the scene in Matt Fractions run when Tony Stark was in a coma so his power of attorney was placed in the hands of his physician. When Norman Osborn found out who it was he screamed.

"Who the hell is Donald Blake?!?!"

Priceless. I guess Dr. Bruce Banner is going to be the only "doctor" in the Avengers film.

Ah, I wasn't aware that they had brought him back. Interesting.

I remember him and Jane Foster being basically written out of the comics back in the seventies or so . . . way before the Walt Simonson era (which, to be honest, was probably the last time I read THOR regularly).

How long did the JMS run go on for?

I was really interested in reading it and ended up getting distracted and missing most of it. As I recall, the Asguardians had to be found by Thor living within human counterparts before they could be rebirthed into the world.

That and something about Loki being a girl?

Anyone mind catching me up with what's been happening of since Thor plopped Asgard in a cornfield?

It was 17 issues before he quit. I think it right before Bendis railroaded Thor and Asgard into his Siege crossover without even telling him apparently and doing such a shit job at the characterization for the Asgardians that made it apparent Bendis hadn't bothered to read the book.

I don't get why Thor is an interesting character minus Blake. He's just some guy with big muscles.

Granted, with Blake, he's too much like the Hulk. Either way, I'll give this a pass.

if you visit joinshield.com and play through the tasks, one of the videos you unlock is a SHIELD global records search, which finds 'Doctor Donald Blake' 's NY driver's license and the photo is of... THOR!

I didn't know that. I'm sad to read it.

Eventually, Marvel just dropped the whole secret identity angle, especially once Thor started spending more and more time in Asgard and other fantasy realms.

But he was part of the character's mythos (the Marvel character, of course) for decades. The film is so obviously incorporating so much of the original stories (most notably in its Kirbyesque designs) that this poster certainly wishes it had stayed true to that material.

The Captain-Marvel-style conversion from a small, weak (and in this case lame) being to a god, or godlike figure, is a classic element in superhero mythology. It was even what motivated Jerry Siegel when he was writing Superman. Stan Lieber incorporated many classic themes into his story-telling, and I think we lose something when those elements get dropped. I mean, what is Thor about without Don Blake?

"Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor."

I don't know if we've talked about this issue before. But Dr. Donald Blake will not be in the upcoming film.

My only experience reading Thor was during J. Michael Straczynski run. But I liked Dr. Donald Blake. I like the idea of a human character that has a medical skillset that the God-like hero lacks. If a bystander is injured what can the hero do? I think also I'm going to miss the King/Excalibur aspect of the hammer in the film.

Do you guys think that the film is better off without Dr. Donald Blake?

Thanks for the spoiler. In case you didn't know, spoilers are not supposed to be in thread titles.

Is that really a spoiler though? Something that doesn't happen in the movie?

Well, yes actually! My husband & I plan seeing the movie on Sunday - it opens here today. One of the things we've been discussing was having seen the trailer, how they'd get his Dr Blake persona established, whether this movie is a prequel to Thor assuming his alterego. Now, I haven't read a Thor comic book since I was 10 (so about 1970) so Dr Blake & his walking stick that became The Hammer is one of my enduring memories of this character.

It's totally a spoiler, especially if you haven't seen a preview and you know Thor's history.
