Re-occuring Characters - Who Should Have Returned?

I love this forum and all of the intelligent posts and viewpoints. I always come away with something new or a different and often refreshing perspective.

One of the other discussions is about Kevin Reilly and why he didn't return despite his popularity, and of course over the course of that discussion we gain insight into possible budgetary limitations, studio policy and the like.

One thought that occurred to me was despite all of those all too real variables, who would I, as a life-long fan, have liked to have seen return with another story possibly centered around them, possibly with added character development or dimension?

Off the top of my head, The Guardian from City on the Edge of Forever. Such a compelling character or focal point for any number of adventures....let alone where it came from or who first created it. Another would be Finnegan....Kirk's nemesis from his days at Starfleet Academy.

Who would you like to have seen return if they had of gone on to a 4th season?

I was re watching some episodes from season one and I was wondering about Kevin Reilly. He was a fun character. I am surprised he didn't become a regular character.

I'm sure a lot of it was budgetary and some was creative. As the series evolved, the big three really emerged as the focal point of the series and below them you had Chekov, Sulu, Chapel and Scottie. Ensemble writing is extremely difficult. During the TOS era you also didn't have "A" and "B" plots as you did in the later series. The secondary characters are mostly interchangable and there's no reason to pay for a full time cast member when you can just drop in a disposable day player.

DeSalle, M'Benga, Boma, Farrell, Angela Martine-Teller (and not as "Lieutenant Lisa"), Riley, Palmer, etc. The problem is when Leslie and Galloway get killed and later in the series re-appear.

Reilly for sure. It would have been nice if Rand could have reappeared as a guest star in one or two episodes for seasons two and three. She would have been great in the Trouble with Tribbles. My favourite would have been Ann Mulhall. She always struck me as being a strong, commanding woman. You get the impression that she would be able to stand up to Kirk without breaking a sweat. If she had been second officer just below Spock in the chain of command (she was the same rank as Scotty), I wouldn't have thought anything was amiss. It was a shame that she spent most of her episode possessed by a girly alien though.

Actually, Galloway got killed at an unknown stardate ("Omega Glory"), so all of his "later" appearances could well be "earlier" ones...

I'd have liked to see Boma return, if only for the potential for conflict. OTOH, we got recurring "stand-ins" for McCoy, Sulu, Chekov and Uhura, but none for Scotty. There were no prominent redshirts who could have returned as Scotty's faithful sidekicks, but we could have gotten a "precurring" character instead: the TAS character Gabler would have been a fun addition. (Especially if he continued to speak on Doohan's voice!)

I would have liked to have seen more appearances by Lt. Cdr. Giotto (Barry Russo), the chief of security from "The Devil in the Dark". I liked the idea of the head of security being a seasoned officer (proving that redshirts apparently can make a career out of security jobs!).

He was referred to as "Lieutenant Commander" even though he wore full commander's stripes.

Gary seven would have been good screwing up history with kirk Spock and the crew to put history right !!

One (or more) of Pike's crew from The Cage could have been interesting.

Nah, I go by Production Order. Poor ol' Galloway and Leslie must've had twin brothers serving aboard the Enterprise...

I would have liked to have seen more of Dr. M'Benga. It was implied that McCoy was the chief medical officer so it would have been nice to have seen other doctors working under him.

Perhaps it was Leslie Connors who died in "Obsession", not Mr Leslie? (Both played by Eddie Paskey.)

And when Galloway returned in "Turnabout Intruder" (mispelt in credits as Galoway), perhaps it was the actor's other character of Johnson instead. (Both played by David L Ross.)

Connors is a med tech, not security. And Galloway's in TI as far as I remember, not Johnson.

I think I once checked the whole episode. He doesn't get called by name in the episode, only rank. If the end credit had called him Johnson (his other TOS role) instead of the mispelt "Galoway", the error wouldn't be an error. Even the actor mentioned to the director that he shouldn't be Galloway in the ep, since Galloway had died.

Shatner had already blown up at Herb Wallerstein because the director had Captain Kirk exit the scene by walking through a wall. Wallerstein probably looked at Ross, an extra, and told him to stuff it. And that sort of proves my point, after all. Why would Ross say "I'm not Galloway; he's dead" to the director unless the character's name was mentioned?

I've always been a big Reilly fan. Also, Garrovick would have been a great addition.
