I think I'm poor

But I still want a 7-10 day vacation in Washington D.C., doing all the typical museum and monument stuff. Haven’t had a real week-long vacation since the 1991 Comic-Con.

Well, at least all your tourism options are free. Good luck on the hotel and dining budget, though. ;)

Yeah, I know things cost. I was advised to stay in Virginia or Delaware.

I am finding myself in a "happy and poor"/"miserable and rich" scenario. I love my new job, but the pay blows. I hated my old job, but I made a lot more money.

I don't know what to do!

Get better at your job that you love and either get a raise where you work because of your greater skills, or find a new employer who will pay you more.

Definitely do NOT waste your time with a career you hate. In order to get paid more, you have to be worth more. In order to be worth more, you have to develop your skills. In order to develop your skills, you have to be motivated and happy, not sulky and foot-dragging.

I only have about 2 hours worth of work to do in any given 8-hour work day.

Lucky you. :D Spent the other six hours developing those skills that will get you a raise or a better job. The boss can't object, since those will be skills related to your job which you love.

If you want to visit DC, don't stay in Delaware (the cynic in me wants to say "if you want to go to vacation, don't go to Delaware," but at least Rehoboth is nice). But, seriously, it's like a 2 hour drive to DC. It's not something I'd recommend to do regularly for a week.

You might be able to find a decent hotel in Northern Virginia, though.

The big problem with this job is that it's not remotely difficult. There are no skills to develop. Plus, my boss (the one in charge of my paycheck anyway) lives 4 hours away. He doesn't care about my skills. He just cares about numbers. If my team and I get X amount of numbers, I get a raise. If we don't get X amount of number, we get some mystery consequence that may or may not be bad.

And I really don't love my new job. That was an exaggeration. My new job is actually bullshit. I just really enjoy the people that I work with.

I have quit the bartending job. Next Monday will be my last day. My new job...meh...I honestly hope I find something better very soon.

I'd recommend Alexandria, VA.

Yeah, Alexandria's probably a good choice. There was an awesome hotel I stayed at a few years ago for a contest in DC. It wasn't any farther than Fairfax, but I forget where. It was cheaper than the Super 8 Motel we stayed at the year prior in New York City and, needless to say, much better.

I wasn't crazy about Alexandria when we went but everyone else seems to love it, so maybe I missed something.

Eh, there's nothing special there. It's old-timey, which could be nice. The point is that it's relatively close to DC, but presumably for cheaper hotel rates.

Poor?..Not really, in fact, if I didn't have the child support, I'd be pretty well off..
mostly because we've minimized our bills..enabling us to travel a bit...and save for retirement...

By living almost without credit,(within our means) we live richer than many of my co-workers and neighbors...

Order and progress...

Delaware?! No, you want to stay in VA. I've stayed in Arlington and Fall Church. Pick a hotel near a park-and-drive metro station and then take the subway into DC.

There's really no excuse for letting 20 years go by without a vacation! ;)

Mr Awe

I will never touch a credit card ever, they're like vulture's.

That's actually not the best attitude. It's true that you don't want to rely on a credit card. However, it's a good idea to have one and use it occasionally. Otherwise, you will have no credit history----and that means no car loans, no house financing, etc. In fact, you may not even be able to rent a car when you go on vacation (they're funny about debit cards).

So I’ve been told here and elsewhere.

Well, that was 1991. Then Hubby was in school and we had no money--from 1993 to 2000. We moved in 2000 and have been paying school loans and bought a house in 2003. Hubby’s work hours were demanding and when he was manager for 2 years, almost no time off at all. Then law school for me for 4 years.

Still, no excuse, but pharmacy school and law school took up 8 of those years. Other schooling took another 5 years.

We did go to Vegas on 3-day weekends here and there, on the cheap ($200 for food, lodging, and travel), and a 5 day trip to Oregon, but there was 2 days of travel, so only 3 days there. Not really much time to actually “vacation.”

We can afford an decent hotel--I just want one that’s clean, quiet, and safe--and splurge a couple times on a fancy restaurant. That and spend a lot of time at the museums and monuments. We really want to see that.

If I had my way, we’d hit New York City too. Hubby really only wants to go there to eat at a few deli’s. Seriously. Or Chicago--he wants to try a famous steakhouse or two. No, really, that’s why he wants to go to Chicago. Makes no sense to me--he makes a fantastic steak at home.

^^ I was just teasing you. You have to find what works and that'll be different for everybody. Some people like to take more short trips and that's totally fine. Some people don't like to travel much at all. That's fine too.

We love to travel and we always say that we have an incurable disease, chronic travel itch! It's hard for us to go 6 months without traveling somewhere. The nice thing about travel is that you can scale it up or down according to your means. Before we had money, we did tons of camping and saw much of the country that way.

Anyway, you just have to find what works for you!
