Tuvok or Neelix?

Kai John

Ensign
Newbie
Personally i've never been a big Tuvok fan, but i hear on this site and many others that people think Neelix is the most annoying character. Who do you thinks worse?

Well, I grok Tuvok (I ran a thread with that title for a while), and Neelix is eh. So I'd rather go without Neelix than without Tuvvie.

Don't get me wrong, i think Tim Russ plays the part really well. I'm just not sure a full vulcan character is particularly interesting to watch unfortunately. Having said that i love the episode where neelix leaves and he does the little dance :)

And yeah i'm just reading that post now. It looks like i'm in the minority!

Tuvok was the best Vulcan hands down.

I can say that because Spock was half-human.

Neelix was pretty good too. Annoying at first but he got better.

Btw, what does "grok" mean anyways? I couldn't find it in a dictionary.

I think grok means get. Basically Rom's Sehlat gets/likes Tuvok.

And personally i agree with you that neelix is ok, but noone i know personall agrees. I'm glad i'm not the only one!

Saavik was the best Vulcan because, well, just look at her.

Kirsty Ally in 1982... Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Robin Curtis however I wouldn't use as a floatie if I was drowning.

Grok does basically mean "get," and is from Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land." A very popular book in the 1960s and for good reason. (And grok was fairly well known. I remember people saying, "I grok Spock.") I recommend it.

Who do I think is worse? Between Tuvok and Neelix? Is this a serious question?

Tuvok is a great character whose presence enriched the show. He was criminally underused, but his dry wit, sagely insights, and friendship with Janeway, among other things, made him a real blast to watch. Only the doctor was as consistently entertaining. Neelix is a horrible annoyance who should've been flushed out the nearest airlock at the first opportunity. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't try to pass off being an obnoxious twit as being charming.

Tuvok is competent, and neelix is useless and annoying. Now if only there was a way of combining those two characters.....

I agree with you RyuRoots that him and Janeway had some good scenes together. He also had some nice scenes with Seven. I guess i feel that the way he treats Neelix in particular is unforgivable, even if many fans would have liked treat him in the same manner!

Pffft, if anything, he wasn't hard ENOUGH on Neelix. I think he's a friggin' saint for never punching Neelix in the head or worse. It's still one of the greatest missed opportunities in Voyager that Tuvok strangling Neelix to death was only in the holodeck.

I'd say I prefer Tuvok to Neelix, personally i like both characters but if i had to choose between the two i'd go with Tuvok for he has so much more interesting history throughout Starfleet

I prefer Tuvok, but I love them both. I will never understand the Neelix hate, and Tuvok is underrated.

Neither of them is "worse".

Both of them work VERY well as foils and straight men for other characters. Delete them and you remove a huge amount of character showcasing.

Tuvok is a better character.

In general I agree with those that think he was underutilized. Tim Russ did a nice job with the small material they gave him, and usually when an actor can do that the role is expanded by the writers. Didn't really happen with Voyager.

I do have a problem with Tuvok. I understand they did not want to have him be a science officer in order to separate him from Spock and that typical Vulcan role. But Tactial / Security? Really? What Vulcan would pick that?

And...why not? Every Vulcan in the history of Vulcan society has longed to be a scientist, is that the implication here? :vulcan:

Are Saavik, Valeris, Selar, and Solok all strange for not being science officers, too?

I agree completely. That's my issue with Tuvok though, i don't think he's the most interesting character in his own right. He's much more effective when he's utilized to play off other characters (particularly Janeway)

Of these two, Tuvok was the stronger character. But neither was the most annoying on Voyager.
