Which of the old novels still take place in the "Relaunchiverse"?

Can anyone tell me? I'm organizing my bookshelves and want to group my Star Trek books into a cohesive timeline, the way I've done my Star Wars shelves.

I don't know how many of the books that came before the Relaunch stuff started are still considered part of that "universe", but can you please lsut as many as you can?

Thanks

I don't think there's a definitive list, and different authors and fans would probably disagree on which ones should "count." There are quite a few earlier novels that have been referenced in more recent ones, but in some cases it's probably more just an homage, given that a lot of the older novels have been contradicted by later canon. Sometimes it's a case of incorporating ideas from classic novels without necessarily asserting that their specific events "really" happened. So it's really hard to say.

You should probably consult the "Charting the Novel-verse" thread pinned at the top of the forum, which lists quite a lot of the interconnections among novels, though it's apparently in need of updating.

As far as I'm concerned, if episodes with fundamental incompatibilites (like "The Q and the Grey" vs. "True Q"), Trek's massive retcons (Voyager's slow warp speed vs. the rest of Trek's ultrafast version, rewritten characters and species), and the other billion continuity issues (how many decks on the Enterprise-E?) can all co-exist in the same Trek universe, then all of the old novels fit with the newer ones too.

^But that's one individual's opinion, not a definitive policy, which is the point. Nobody can really say which of the older novels "count" as part of the modern novel continuity, because it's going to come down to individual preference and tolerance for inconsistency. So the kind of list the original poster asked for is pretty much unattainable.

If you want to try and get some sort of chronological order for your books, your best bet would be to consult the timeline in Voyages of Imagination, which did a superb job of putting most of the novels into a cohesive timeline. Obviously, there are still some things which simply can't be fixed, but it comes pretty close.

Most of the books published after VoI were more careful about their timelines, so they should slot in fairly easily.

How about the New Frontier series? Does it fit into the Relaunch continuity? I've heard that they don't, but looking on Memory Beta everything seems to be okay.

There have been a few New Frontier crossovers, most recently in Before Dishonor. The NF gang were also namedropped in Destiny.

So, yeah, same continuity despite any glitches or contradictions.

The series is written by Peter David, and he never refers to anything that has happened in a book he did not write. But outside of the series other authors have made references to elements of the series.

Actually, in Before Dishonor PAD referenced the short story "Devices and Desires" by Kevin Lauderdale from The Sky's The Limit, and the "Pike" sections his TOS novel The Rift were consistant with D.C. Fontana's Pike novel Vulcan's Glory. But other than those two examples, yeah, generally he never references works by other authors unless it's part of a crossover.
