Futuristic skyscraper plans - look nice, but when will we see them?

Re: Futuristic skyscraper plans - look nice, but when will we see them

That's exactly the sort of thing I mean. I don't find that beautiful at all.

Re: Futuristic skyscraper plans - look nice, but when will we see them

I've seen images of it before, and I think it's hugely overrated.

Without the waterfall, it looks like a mound of bland rectangular slabs and boxes. The presence of the waterfall doesn't turn that into something spectacular for me. If anything it's a distraction from the building. From this iconic view, the building doesn't have a "face". It's a faceless design that's difficult to identify with. Unusual design? - yes. Clever engineering? - maybe. Publicity? - lots. Cliched use of overhangs and cuboids? - yes. Beautiful? - not at all.
You need to upload your picture to an image-hosting site like Photobucket or ImageShack, then link to it.
Thank You! I'm too used to Facebook - just uploading from my own computer.

That's not the greatest image of Fallingwater.
That may not be the house’s best side, but I wanted a view that emphasized the amazing cantilevers. Anyway, it looks good from any angle.

The house was meant to be one with its surroundings. The waterfall and the rocky setting are integral to the design. You can’t separate them.

As for not thinking it’s beautiful, you must be aware that you’re in a distinct minority. Well, there are always those who zig where everyone else zags.

JOOC, what buildings do you find esthetically pleasing?

(Generally I like Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, even though the man had an ego the size of a battleship. He may have been a creative genius, but he certainly wasn’t infallible. Take the Guggenheim, for instance. The damn thing works against its intended purpose. What logical reason was there for building an art museum in the shape of a giant corkscrew?)

Yeah, Fallingwater isn't cliched use of overhangs and cuboids. It's the influence behind all other cliched uses.

Agreed on FLW. He had a great idea for design style, but when you start reading in depth about some of his creations, you find out he wasn't a great engineer.

Re: Futuristic skyscraper plans - look nice, but when will we see them

It's still a cool building (was very neat to see in person).

Good point. It’s a bit like saying that New York’s Seagram Building and Lever House, both built in the 1950s, look clichéd because they’re minimalist glass boxes. Decades later, every modern city in the world was full of glass boxes. But the Seagram Building and Lever House were the originals.

It's still a cool building (was very neat to see in person).
You’ve been to Fallingwater? Lucky bastard. But then, that part of Pennsylvania is practically in your backyard.

I always thought it was amazing that the Burj Kalifa is the first building to be taller than the fictional Glass Tower from The Towering Inferno. I thought reality would have surpassed fiction much sooner.
Tall buildings aren't necessary for high population density.

Funny story, I was in Pennsylvania once on a business trip and had a free day. So, I decided to drive out to see Fallingwater (yes, I do love FLW's sense of design). Long story short, I under estimated how long a drive it was and managed to arrive just as the gates were locked!!!:brickwall::brickwall::brickwall:

At 5pm. :wtf::wtf::wtf::brickwall::brickwall::brickwall:

So it was a long drive and a wasted day off for nothing.
