Star Trek: Online

yeah I don't foresee using a turret on my cruiser

IMO - Turrets are nice in a couple of ways (IMO):

1) You're always able to put fire on something - regardless of your ship's orientation (and that definitely a plus in PvP, even if you only dabble in it.)

2) You're always able to target and shot down HYTs that are destroyable (Plasmas, Tricobalts, etc.)

Also, depending on the type, the constant 'plinking' means a better chance of the low percentage 'special' occuring (ie - I like the Plasma turret for the 5% chance of a Plasma danage dot.)

So, yes, you sacrifice a little DPS, but IMO the general utility of having one 360 degree weapon is nice (at least imo for a Cruiser or Science ship. With the overall manuverability bonus Escorts get, it might not be all that great for them.)

The slower, the better, I say. But, then I'm kinda weird.

I've also been going slow. I've been playing the game off and on for about a year (although I did take a 3 month break in the fall) and I'm just now at Cap 6. STO is a good game to take your time playing through the lower levels, smelling the flowers.

Also, am I the only one who finds myself spending a surprising amount of time just flying around or visiting places like Risa and DS9? I've met some great people just hanging out.

Not at all. I tend to socialize a lot during missions or for missions, but there are also evenings when we just hang on the new TOS interiour for example.
That's generally much more fun than grinding for gear that gives you 0.02% chance for some tiny extra damage or something.

Although grinding for a huge leap in gear can be rewarding too. I outfitted my Galaxy-X with mostly purple Mk XI phaser beams and they read 600DPS each when mounted!!!

We all seem to take different approaches to this game. Whatever provides us with an enjoyable experience.

I'm probably more interested in playing through a good story and enjoying the challenges I face in getting there.

I also like crafting, which is grinding, but not to advance in level, just to create stuff that's mine that I didn't pay extortionate prices for on the exchange. It helps me feel like I'm building a character.

The social aspects of the game is something that I've decided I'm just not into. I haven't joined a fleet and probably won't. I like to play co-operatively with others, but having friends who play doesn't seem to suit me as I'd feel obligated to do stuff for them. Not that I'm mean and don't like people, that's for RL stuff, not for when I'm gaming.

Just thought I'd put that out there, hopefully it should help people understand me better. :)

Starting with this screenshot, I have posted a series of shots related to the TOS things you can get in the game. To get everything shown, you need the following:

TOS Constitution Class starter ship. You get this for free if you bought the game from GameStop, or you can buy it on the C-Store.

TOS Phaser pistol. The particular one I'm holding is one of the optional rewards for the featured mission arc involving the Devidians. It's free. Another variant, with the white handle, is part of the C-Store "TOS Value Bundle", which is available for a limited time.

TOS Shuttle Pet, Command Variant Uniform, TOS Ship Interiors. All come from the Value Bundle. The costume variant is available separately in the C-Store.

TOS Medical Uniform Variant. Available separately in the C-Store, also comes as part of the Value Bundle.

TOS Uniform - the random crew in my ship interior have theirs as part of the Value Bundle, but my bridge officers who wear TOS uniforms, and my own pants and boots, are part of this costume pack. Cheap on the C-Store, and it's been given away by various people at various times, it's not impossible to come by a code for it.

TOS Mirror Universe Variant Uniform - another C-Store purchase, as with others it unlocks it for both you and your bridge officers.

Not shown, but related:

Flyable Type F shuttlecraft. Got that as part of the Value Bundle.

TOS Phaser One - reward from a mission, or you can usually find one on the Auction House if you're impatient. Since you can replay missions, there's no point going this route.

Shown, but not TOS related:

Breen Tactical Officer. This was a reward for completing the Deferi arc before the next featured series started. No longer available, except there are some in the auction house for ridiculous prices. Will become available again in the future.

Reman Science Officer. Reward for completing the Romulan featured arc before the next series starts. Next series hasn't started yet, I think you can still get this.

I can't say I've ever been interested in trying an MMO before, but it is Star Trek - any signs of a Mac version?

Not officially, but there is an 'unofficial' Mac thread on the Forums that the Devs pay attention to. (STO can run under WINE.)

I'd prefer a native version rather than paying for a Windows one and throwing the dice on it running in an emulator.

I had hoped the Mac App store would entice Atari, which to this point has ignored the platform. Well, maybe Aspyr can get involved?

That's the joy of being non-conformist, I guess. You get to be special and elite, but when it comes to mass-producing things, you're elite enough that it's usually not worth it on the cost/benefit scale to remake things for a minority of possible customers...

I've got a mac. Never thought of myself as an elitist. I just thought it was a pretty good piece of equipment. Go figure. Guess I'll finish my snifter of brandy, put out my pipe, and cry myself to sleep. I've got some soul searching to do.:weep:

You don't have to pay to try it out on your Mac.
All you need is a referral or buddy key to activate a trial account.
You can get those from nearly all STO players on here.
If you like on, pm me with your email adress and I sent it to you.

I play STO on my iMac. Rather, I have it installed. I don't play it that much...not because I don't like it. It is a great game and I have a lot of fun, I just hate to play alone. All the fleets I join end up being disastrously inactive.

I see now there is a lot of new content with the Featured Episode series I played through most of the Breen series, but I haven't started the others. Would anyone like to team up with me for those sometime? :D

Yes of course.
Just look for me when you are online. You will most likely find me around 2pm-6pm EST (8pm-12pm German time).

You are also invited to join the boards fleet: The TrekBBS Armada, since a few days with a organized base faction on KDF side, the House of TrekBBS.
We are fairly small but have a regular core group. You will probably at least meet a couple of us around European prime time. On the weekends it's a bit busier.
Every new member of course enhances that experience, and most of them post on here. So you can meet up via different channels.

Also, some members of All Out Assault hang out in TrekBBS Armada's chat channel, and are happy to team with you guys any time.

I appreciate the offers! I've been meaning to hang out at TrekBBS more often so a fleet with that crowd is appealing. I am recently disabled (suffered a terrible spine injury the other month) and as such my employment situation is incredibly sketchy. I used to play Euro peak hours, but for the next month or so I'll only be able to play when it is very late in the evening for the Americas.

I'll add you to my friends list & hopefully I'll run into you in-game!

I think there's enough Mac owners that it's worthwhile, otherwise no one would bother developing for it. Now that Apple is using Intel processors it shouldn't be _that_ difficult to port the code, but if they aren't bothered I've got a lot of other things to do...
