Spring is here!
Spring is here!
Life is skittles
And life is beer

Spring has finally arrived (up here in northern north America), so let's celebrate the world waking up again with poetry.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to figure out how to display poetry in an avatar. Maybe a picture displaying the subject of your favourite poem, a display of the poem itself or a picture showing how poetry makes you feel.

Or something else entirely - let your imagination run wild :)

I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love;

No media (except for poems themselves)

Avatars 140 by 140.

Closing date Friday 15th April 6:00 GMT (or sometime then - that's midday my time and I'm getting root canal work done that morning :borg:)

Hope I haven't forgotten anything.

We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

Spring is here!
Spring is here!
Life is skittles
And life is beer

:guffaw:

I like this contest already.

Robert Browning reference, and a Dark Tower reference, which in itself was a Robert Browning reference.

GREAT IDEA

It's spring. So what could be more appropriate than one of the best known poems in the English language :)

altogether now....

I Wandered Lonely....

Brilliant animation! If you want to enter it in the contest though it needs to be avatar sized, so 140 by 140 pixels.

In the immortal words of Zonker: "Spring at last! Spring at last! Thank god almighty, spring at last!"

You stole my favorite poem.

Also, it should be "yellow" wood. ;)

I'll find something else....

It's one of mine, too. The line in the av is from the last stanza.

The Road Not Taken
by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

^^ Oh, I see. I assumed you meant the opening line. :D

Okay, here's mine:

Pluck thy beak from out my heart!

I really want to be like this...

"When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
or only bread and pickles for a week
and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple."

by Jenny Joseph.

My very reserved, quiet, old-fashioned mother made up a shorter version for her 77th birthday last year:

"When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple,
But if you put me in a big red hat,
I'll f***king hurt you."
