Jonathan Frakes..."CBS turned down my ST TV series"

Frankly, I think having movies and a TV series out at the same time had no real effect on each other. Nemesis had a shitty script, that's why it failed. And ENT has its own issues that would be absurdly silly to pin on NEM. DS9 was also fantastic, apparently suffering no detrimental affect from the TNG movies. I can understand not wanting to *oversaturate* the market, and THAT did happen. I don't think one TV show running while a movie or two is planned would be that bad (again, DS9), though.

And personally, I think it'd be good to have a TV series again, especially if it was the timeline I actually care about.

Its hard to tell exactly, however Insurrection was inferior to Nemesis in my opinion, and THAT was on par with the other Trek movies in total gross. Nemesis made $120+ million from all sources including selling well on DVD, setting the record for Trek before ST09, with over 2 million copies. It also scored well on cinemascore with people who DID see it in theaters, but obviously was a disappointment overall. So I think there is some truth to what Berman and Frakes are claiming that simple availability and over-saturation may have ruined the market. It took 9 years and 3 TV shows, and 4 movies (and a hell of a lot of $$ for Paramount) to finally do it in 2002. It started around 1995-96, when DS9's ratings dropped like a stone and Voyager appeared..

Well, that's unfortunate. A post-Nemesis series is what I want to see. Bring aboard Manny Coto, the Reeves-Stevenses, the Okudas and some of the other great Trek writers and producers and you could have an amazing series that both ties in to the previous five series, but also "boldly goes" out on its own.

That would be cancelled within a year.

I personally would have enjoyed it. I was so mad when they decided to make Enterprise a sequel. Also I wasn't too happy about the latest movie being set in the TOS era, but I understood it. I would rather see a TOS era Star Trek movie then no Star Trek at all. However, I my preference woudl be a post-Nemesis Star Trek movie or series.

I know how you feel, but I've come to the conclusion I'd rather wait a few more years, have them come up with a really good concept and invest a lot of planning and talent in it. Hopefully by then the movie series of 2-3 movies has run its course and they are willing to do a series.

So Jonathan Frakes probably came up with what would have basically been a continuation of STNG...maybe the Titan TV series? RAMA

Hey, RAMA, awesome sig. :)

Back to the topic in hand. I don't think the time is right for new Trek, much as I'd love to see more Riker.

I know my Trekkie sister would welcome a Riker-centric series. I keep loanin' her the post-NEM books, and she complains that she doesn't like 'em as much, 'cause there isn't enough Riker, and it isn't the TNG she's used to. So, I just loan her the Titan titles.

Yes agreed, and if a new series is in the works then, get Ronald Moore to come back as well!

I think the problem was that between 1987 and 2005, there was always a ST series on the air. When one finished, another began (e.g. Voyager -> Enterprise) or they overlapped and ran at the same time (e.g. TNG -> DS9, DS9 -> Voyager). They should have allowed one or two years between series to generate excitement again. Then, on top of that, you had feature films with the same casts as the shows on TV. There was never any period where people could get away from Star Trek and anticipate it coming back. It was always there.

Things are different now. We haven't had a ST series in 6 years. The Abrams films are so different from anything on TV that they stand alone. A series where we can follow the characters week to week would be so different than anything a movie can deliver in just two hours. TV is very different from a film. I think people would welcome a new series, but just one at a time!

I read the news bits about this but what are the details?
Frakes really approached CBS with... what?
One line--"Let's do another Star Trek series?"

Did he have a plan? An outline? Series synopsis?
Proposed cast? Similar to the Titan novels, or completely different? More same old TNG again, something else?
Evidently interested in starring as Captain, but also as creator, director, more?

I know he was shot down from the start, but what plans did he have up his sleeve (if any?)

unfortunatelly even though I would love to see a Titan or Titan like Series on the small screen, I doubt a "Prime" Universe series would ever see the light of day. The Power To Be are focused on the new timline so I think anything that would be a series would be foucused there.

As someone who subscribes to the "oversaturation thesis," I think it's just as well they didn't start up again with the whole TV Trek competing against movie series Trek.

Hopefully, they're capable of learning from their mistakes, and we'll just let the movie series do well for a while.

This. Though I am bummed that the animated Star Trek: Final Frontier never saw the light of day.

I think if they were to do a Animated series ala the current Clone Wars Series, that may do well atleast on Cartoon Network. In that format I think a 30minute episode runtime would help as well. That way also you can get the voices from across all of the TNG era to contribute or atleast get some voice talents that are close to the original voices.

I'm surprised Frakes didn't have the good sense not to waste his time. Did he really think they would say yes?

I want something new. I don't need for there to be guest appearances from either 23rd or 24th century characters. :techman:
