Miss Chicken (the cat) is ill

It is sort of autumn here - though the last few days have been more like the summer we never got i.e it rained almost all summer with very little sun.

Miss Chicken's appointment with the vet is in about 30 minutes time.

All my best to you, Miss Chicken, and your fuzzy little three legged namesake. :)

We have just got back from the vet and there was good news and bad news.

The good news is the vet is pleased with the improvement in her balance and the head tilt though he does want her to take a second course of antibiotics.

The bad news is that the vet had a very really good look of the eye this time. Before he thought that eye was dilated because of the ear trouble but it has now been determined that she actually has a dislodged lens. This supports the theory that Miss Chicken took a solid blow to the side of the head most probably in a fall and the fall is the source of all her problems. In fact about 3 and a half weeks ago we took her to the vet because her tail was very sore. That time the vet couldn't really find much wrong with the tail even after shaving most of the fur off. He said it wasn't broken but did suggest that she might have hurt it in a fall. However I don't remember noticing anything wrong with her eye back then.

The vet says it is best to leave the eye untreated because he is certain she still have some vision in it. He told us that she is probably seeing things differently hence her having trouble jumping onto my bed the other day (she probably is having trouble with depth vision). He said the eye is healthy and he doesn't think it advisable to operate on or remove the eye at this time. He said any such operation would have to be done in Melbourne which would be quite expensive for me.

He reckons that Chicken will adapt to the change in vision and as long as we keep an eye on the eye and bring her back if there are any notable changes (it becomes bloodshot, gray or cloudy etc) things should be OK.

Basically that's good news then. Nothing life threatening. Glad to hear it - I don't know what I will do when my cat dies and I wish that sort of angst on nobody.

I guess, that on the whole, it is good news.

The vet had suggested that we actively discourage Miss Chicken from climbing. Of all my cats she is the one that likes to climb the most. We have decided that if we go out she is to be left on my youngest son's room as he has less furniture for her to climb. We will shut the door to the other bedrooms, the kitchen and the lounge room and she will only be able to use the one bedroom, hallway and laundry.

Glad to hear it's not a tumor.
Poor Ms. Chicken. Feel better kitty!

That's all pretty good news. She'll adapt to the eye problem. I once had a cat that was blinded in one eye (and eventually lost it) after being hit by a car. He missed a few jumps for a couple of weeks and then he was fine.

I'm glad to hear it's nothing too serious. Miss Chicken is bound to adjust to her new vision and will soon learn to get along fine.

It's amazing how adaptable cats can be. It reminds me of this cat who's story I stumbled upon while browsing Flickr one day.

Gumbo The Cat

I'm glad to hear Miss Chicken the cat is doing better Miss Chicken the human!

yeah, my cat had an ulcer in her one eye which burst and after she had the eye removed, she adapted very quickly. in fact, she was MORE of a pickle with what she got up to than she had been BEFORE the eye was removed!

I'm glad that it is not life threatening - you and Miss Chicken have some interesting days ahead. Good luck to you both!
