I'm guessing since Black Swan was such a hit, Aronofsky doesn't really need Wolverine anymore.

Part of the appeal for Aronosfky in doing The Wolverine was apparently doing a movie where everyone else also wanted to do the movie as well- and that comes from Aronosfky directly. He was tired of being the only one in the room who wanted to make the movie he wanted to make, and wanted to try something different for a change.

I do believe that was a legitimate reason for doing the film. I'm not sure if I believe some of the reports that were bandied about saying that Aronosfky changed his mind after he made millions from Black Swan- I think if The Wolverine was a success it would have propelled his career in ways no other movie currently probably could achieve. However, that's purely subjective at this point. Perhaps Aronosfky doesn't see it that way- or perhaps it has entirely to do with his family situation and these issues weren't even in consideration, which I have a tendency to believe regardless of how naive that sounds.

Either way, it is incredibly disappointing that Aronosfky won't be doing the project after all but I hope 20th Century Fox finds someone of his caliber and not another Brett Ratner. I'm still pulling for someone like Matt Reeves or Duncan Jones to direct this project.

I'm glad that "The Wolverine" is still on target and as Hugh joked himself about, it's going to be difficult to find a director of equal talent or better to replace Aronofsky. I suggested to JacksonArcher David Fincher but that's most likely a pipe dream. Matt Reeves would be an excellent choice. I think that everyone there understands what fans want to see from this movie and that Darren himself set the bar and tone high on quality so hopefully we get someone who's able to execute a similar vision. I'm still excited. The script and story are still intact. Hugh is jazzed again..it's just they need to find an equal minded director and that's gonna be hard.

No, I think Aronofsky still believes in cinema as artistry and not something to be used to market action figures.

Honestly, I'm still not completely sold on Matt Reeves. As much as I love the Bad Robot camp, It's a bit hard to judge anything off of Cloverfield and Let Me In was damn near a shot for shot remake of Let the Right One In, however this could be the narrative to deliver something special, who knows.

I was thinking a director with a more of a international flavor like your Alfonso Cuaron's or the director I mentioned above, Alejandro González Iñárritu but that might be too similar to the Galvin Hood situation coming off something like Tsotsi and Rendition.

Cuaron would be a great choice despite the fact that he's working on "Gravity" right now.

And as we all know, if it comes from a comic book it can't be a work of art....

I have no idea how that even relates to what I said.

I'm thinking that Kestrel was meaning that comic books are and should be considered a form of art rather than being dismissed as nothing more than kiddie books as they're mostly thought of...but that's just how I took the comment.

I got that but that still doesn't relate to what I said.
My comment was the difference in how a director like Aronofsky views cinema vs. how a studio like FOX views it.
It has nothing to do with the source material of the film.

Besides, could I be a comic book fan, be a member of a site like this if I didn't understand that comics are a form of art?

Everything that I've read and seen in this thread indicates Aronofsky was treating this film as a serious work of art - and moreover that Fox was giving him the latitude to do this. So I'm not sure how else I could've taken what you said?

    ETA: Fair point!

That Aronofsky doesn't want his film to be used as a marketing gimmick for toys, just as I meant it.

So he'd rather preserve his intregity and decline the work rather than see his work plastered on a lunchbox.

You really didn't get that from what I said?

Look at the huge mistake with "Dark Knight".
Nolan made a great artistic film w/ Batman.
The worst marketing idea was making mass market toys for a film like that.
Nolan didn't make a film to sell toys, niether is Aronofsky but FOX does.

Let Me In, despite the inherent similarities to Let The Right One In, was a far superior film. It really proved that Matt Reeves is a versatile filmmaker.
