Good Picard eps?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
hey all, picard is a top 5 character in Trek for me, maybe even a top 3.

anyway, i haven't watched TNG in a while and was wondering in which eps do we really see picard shine? i like his classy, traditional, refined, intelligent style of leadership. what are some eps where he talks about leadership or commanding? even if they're not picard focused and only have 1 short, but were really well done and allow us to see the side of picard that display the traits i mentioned.

thanks

Devil's Due, Who Watches the Watchers, and The Drumhead are all good showings for Picard and the qualities you listed, I think. Not sure about him talking about leadership specifically.

'The Battle'

'The Big Goodbye'

'The Measure of a Man' (a Data-centric episode, but Picard gets good moments in it)

'Allegiance'

'Captain's Holiday'

'The Best of Both Worlds, Part One'

'Family'

'Final Mission'

'The Drumhead'

'Darmok'

'Disaster'

'Unification, Parts One & Two'

'The First Duty'

'The Perfect Mate'

'The Inner Light'

'Relics' (for the scene with Scotty in the holodeck)

'Chain of Command, Part Two' (it shows how far Picard will go for his crew)

'The Pegasus' (a Riker-centric episode that still has good Picard stuff)

ok, thanks.

yah, i wasn't looking for anything in particular. just something general where he has epic/classic scenes.

'Captain's Holiday'

:techman: It is marvelous to get to see the relaxed, off-duty Jean-Luc Picard suavely romance the beautiful, lady archaeologist. Wonderfully written by Ira Steven Behr, this episode is an homage to the great romantic films of the 40's. Vash is Bacall to Picard's Bogart. Vash's brazenness complements Picard's more sedate personality perfectly. She is the ideal foil for Picard's straight man. Picard and Vash have a very compelling 'battle of wills' dynamic to their relationship. The characterizations and relationship dynamics between Picard and Vash makes this episode a pure joy to watch.

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie

The First Duty is probably the best possible episode for the qualities you mentioned. However I have to mention that Tapestry, although it doesn't really show Picard as being in command of anything, is one of the best episodes in the series, in addition to being centered around the Cap'n himself.

Clues, Devil's Due, The Wounded, Booby Trap, The Drumhead.

I think in all of them, the highlight is that Picard uses his reason and wisdom to resolve the situation. IMO, that's the strength of the Picard character, he's very intelligenct and astute.

Almost every episode has Picard pontificating about something or other. IMO, the best Picard episodes are when he is not doing same.

My favorite Picard-centric episode is "The Inner Light". That haunting melody on the alien flute speaks volumes more than a speech ever could.

The Jean-Luc Picard Collection, which I have on DVD, includes The Big Goodbye, Sarek, Family, The Drumhead, Darmok, The Inner Light, and Tapestry. With the exception of the rather mediocre The Big Goodbye, I think it’s an excellent collection.

Starship Mine is a great Picard episode in my opinion.
Agreed!

On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of "Captain's Holiday". It has a couple of interesting moments and some good Picard lines, though.

Others I'll throw in that haven't been mentioned yet: "The Defector", which has that excellent scene between Picard and Jarok in the captain's ready room. And "Lower Decks", for the interactions between Picard and Sito. The way he seemingly knocks her down, only to later reveal the real reason he did so, was nicely played, especially given that he was present for the incident at the Academy in "The First Duty" which is what got her early career in so much trouble in the first place.

Both eps are among TNG's best anyway. :bolian:

I would suggest that along with Inner Light, you watch it's "sequal" Lessons.

The episode where Picard romances a crewmember then, upon realizing that he can't handle the responsibility of ordering someone he loves into danger, kicks her off the ship, which, remember, is the assignment that all Starfleet officers aspire to? Yeah, "Lessons" sure does give us a different side of Picard. I'd love to see a further sequel, in which Darrin sues Picard and Starfleet.

I prefer the U.K. version. It doesn't have "Tapestry" or "Family", but it has "Allegiance" and "Starship Mine" (which are both solid), and "Lessons", which I like just as much.

The only stinker on the set is "Bloodlines". I ordered the U.K. version even though I'm in North America because I think it has a more solid set of episodes overall (also, I already have "Tapestry" on the Q collection).

I can't believe some people rag on "Lessons" so much...it's such a sweet and moving episode. As I mentioned in another thread, I love how almost every act break ends with Picard smiling. It starts off so pleasant and uplifting, then the final act and the end have emotional resonance.

I say "Who Watches the Watcher." The guy took an arrow to the heart for what he believed in. You can't get any braver than that.

But a little voice deep down inside of me says any episode where Patrick Stewart has his shirt ripped open is a GOOD Picard episode.:adore:

Silicon Avatar
Tapestry
Rascals
The Drumhead

Also, just for fun, the episode where Troi, Riker and Troi's mum get kidnapped by Ferengi. I love when he has to 'win her back'.
