What is your favourite sport?

Can someone explain the difference between rugby league and union to me?

I watched a few games on TV while visiting England, and I liked one of them more since it reminded me more of American football, so I could understand it better.

Seeing as the NFL lockout has started, it might be a good time to learn more about any kind of rugby.

There's always the Canadian Football League! :D ;)

American football. Despite being Canadian, I prefer four down football. Also, I like NFL more than college, but still watch a lot of NCAA. This fall, I may be watching it exclusively.

Differences between the two:-

Rugby League has only 13 players on each team, while rugby union has 15 players. When rugby league started in the UK in 1895, the two flankers were dropped.

In rugby union, they have rucks, mauls and lineouts. But league there is a six tackle rule (similar to "downs" in american football).

How tackling a player is different in both codes, as in league a player must play the ball after being tackled.

A try (similar to a touchdown) in main form of points, but in both codes the ball must be grounded. After a try has been scored, a conversion is taken. Both games have a different scoring system. Both games goals are worth 2 points, tries are 4 in league, but 5 points in union. Also in both games there are penalty goals, and field goals. In union, both are worth 3 points, but in league, penalty goals are worth 2 points and field goals are worth 1 point.

I remember there was some NRL games being shown on Spike in 2009, well the finals series, as I remember bro commenting on it. You might be able to find some games for viewing on the NRL website.

There is also the American National Rugby League. And USA Rugby League also. Both games are played during the American summer.

^Thanks. So it's sort of analogous to the way that the NFL, CFL, and NCAA all are generally the same game, but have enough differences in the rules to make them unique?

Hard not to like a sport with a play called a 'maul'!

Hockey followed fairly closely by baseball. Basically, I've got sports I care deeply about to watch year-round. :techman:

Taekwondo because I have been doing it for 4 years! And I also enjoy swimming and watching my league, AFL and cricket!

To watch : Test cricket > AFL > EPL Soccer > Other types of cricket.
To play : Cricket > Indoor Cricket > Rugby > Softball.

^ Tennis sounds good. Can't wait until the town courts are lit up again in the evenings, my wife and I played a lot last year.

To play --> golf
To watch --> golf, hockey, basketball, football

Least favorite to watch --> baseball. When I was younger I enjoyed baseball. But that was back when games took only 2 hours or so to play. Now they're over 3 hours. It's dreadful to watch hitters take forever to get set in the box and pitchers who take forever to pitch the ball. There should be a 7-second clock between pitches. Then I'd start watching baseball again.
