I'm sorry Staples but no.

Commodore
Have you seen the new commercial where the couple's house is broken into and everything is taken but their computer thats from the 80's. They go to staples to buy a new one and staples has taken all their files and transfered onto the new computer.

Is this a little risky to you? I couldn't trust that my tax info, my money info, even small personal info to be handled that way. They could just easily copy the info and sell it to the highest bidder. I don't think this is a good idea.

Am I wrong to think this way?

If you're that worried about your personal information, you probably shouldn't be storing it on a computer with an internet connection in the first place.

That doesn't really make much sense. If they were still using a computer from the 80s, being broken into, wouldn't necessarily necessitate a need to instantly replace it.

The actual video, in case anyone cares.

I guess the "joke" is that their computer wasn't even good enough to steal, which indicated to the materially-obsessed yuppie couple that they should get a new one that is worth stealing.

Right, and I get the joke part. But even though staples is a big store like office depot. I just can't see myself having my computer files(lets say its without internet) being transfered, when I can do it on my own. It just doesn't seem safe to me.

Which means the message is that Staples will help you get something worth stealing, so next time, something more expensive will be stolen. Someone in advertising didn't think this one through.

Two comments:

  • There are some people around who might be less capable than you of transferring those files between those computers. Perhaps they don't know how to configure the old computer to share files over a network or how to temporarily install the old hard drive in the new computer. They might also need help configuring ISP connections and mail/news reader program settings.
  • Possibly related to the previous comment: Someone who is really worried about the security of sensitive information like tax software data files would have been keeping it on removable media like floppy disks, CD-Rs or thumb drives. The personal data on the old hard drive would be less sensitive things like family photos and browser bookmarks/favorites.

I provide a data backup/restoration service, and I don't go looking through files other than what I have to backup or restore. If one is truly paranoid, one puts their files on other media to be stored.

For what it's worth I wouldn't trust Staples to do all that stuff for me as well. That being said, I know how to do it myself without fucking it up so I'm not the target audience.

I don't think so.
I wouldn't let them near my stuff.

Plus if I got a new computer- sometimes they charge all this money to "set it up" -setting up a computer is dirt simple, and I think it's a good thing for new computer owners to do.

Is a couple who has bought a new computer in what looks like 30 years really going to have that many files needing transferring over? I mean if you haven't beaten Space Quest IV yet then it's time to give it up.

And going from a desktop to a small laptop is a pretty odd move to make. Laptops these days, yes, can be very, very capable bu I still think a desktop PC is the better route for people to go.

Setting up a computer is simple for you. That doesn't mean it's simple for everyone. I have setup several computers for older couples, and the fee to do so is very minimal. Plus, if I set it up, I also do a quick spring cleaning and remove programs that are bloated and will slow down a computer, and optimize it for hassle free operation.

I don't know how the chain is doing overall, but the Staples near me has a big parking lot that's always, always empty.

What motive does someone have to follow the privacy policy when they're probably going to be out of a job tomorrow anyway?

Older people can still learn, maybe a tech savvy friend could be present, but some of those setup fees are plain robbery. I've seen fees like... 100$ to set up your new computer. Insane.
