What do I do with my fanfiction novel?

Urge

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
My Fanfiction novel is almost complete (only one chapter left!:-) and now I am wondering about its future.

To begin with, I was thinking that I should hand it over to the official star-trek people and see if it could become a cannon-novel, but people here said that the chances where very slim, and that Star Trek have their own plans and their own writer-teams. (Im a bit to eager to wait forever for a negative reply)

Then I was thinking about setting up a site, have the first two chapters on it, and see if I could sell the rest. (Sending actual books around the world is appealing, but I could off course also do it as attachments to a mail) The problem here is that it would be illegal to do so.

I dont know how strict Star Trek is on such matters, are there fanfiction writers out there who make a buck or two on their novels? I have put a lot of work into it, so it would be cool to get a little financial award as well.

And if it is a bad idea to sell it, then how do I make the most people read it? There are a lot of places to put fanfiction, and some are better than others I guess - both in layout and the number of visitors.

Any insights, or experiences on these matters?

No ST novels are canon, not even the licensed ones from Pocket/Gallery Books.

If you have a literary agent, he/she is welcome to send your manuscript to Pocket's editors. But the slush pile is tall (perhaps hundreds) and there are only about 14 slots per year, and about 20 or so currently regular, popular and prolific ST authors.

Paramount/CBS still frowns on money-making schemes using their licensed "Star Trek" franchise. A cost-recovery hardcopy fanzine, or a free online text, would escape a "cease and desist" letter from their lawyers.

You are breaking the law if you attempt to profit out of Star Trek. Small-press non-profit fanzines are a different matter, and in the 70s and 80s were seen, even by Paramount press releases, as part of the reason ST remained popular after TOS ended. So amateur fanzines have always been tolerated, while fanfic stories made to resemble a licensed mass-market paperback novel would often get a "Cease and desist".

Write it well. ;)

This is a good response, don't attempt to sell your novel, paramount will string you up and nail you to a wall... not a very nice way to wake up...
