30 Days ... Do you think I can pull this off?

At first I thought I'll leave it at just No TV for 30 days, then I started thinking about my life. Well much of it is not as it should be, that why I expanded a list a bit. Here it is:

The 30 day list

  1. No TV
  2. No coffee
  3. No alcohol
  4. No sex
  5. No smoking
  6. No sweats
  7. No more procrascinating/wasting time
  8. Become fitter (lose 10 pounds)
  9. Become an early riser (getting up at 5am or sooner)
  10. Learn a new language
  11. Lucid dreams (have at least 3)
  12. Quit my job
  13. Start blogging
  14. Start meditating
  15. Earn $2500 online
  16. Write a book

Optional (if I have enough time)
Learn to play an instrument (keyboard or accordion)
Learn to dance (hip hop, breakdance, robo, popular dances, etc)
Laugh everyday (watch something funny):guffaw:
Start date:

Final Note
I'm gonna take a few days off to prepare myself before I fully commit to it.
PS: I suspect 15 and 4 will be the hardest to achieve, (rofl
''hardest")

Your thoughts?
Yay or Nay? Do you think I will succeed?
Have you ever done something similar yourself?

Post your opinion, thanks. ;)

15 is easy, just sell everything you own on ebay. You'd be surprised how much your crap is worth if you sell tons of it.

What's the point of all this anyway?

4. No sex - why? Sex isn't bad for you.

9. Become an early riser - this is only a benefit if the rest of your schedule requires it. If you work nights, getting up at 5am isn't going to do you any good.

10. Learn a new language - you can start, but I guarantee you're gonna need more than 30 days.

11. Lucid dreams - that's not really a goal that you can control.

12. Quit your job - just make sure you have a new job lined up first.

15. Earn $2500 online - doing what? If you succeed, please share with the group!

In fact, there are even a lot of studies that suggest that people who stay up late tend to be a little more intelligent and creative.

Indeed.

While I theoretically like the idea of getting up early and accomplishing stuff in the morning (mostly to maximize my happy sunshine intake), my quality of life was much better when I used to stay up until the middle of the night and sleep until noon.

I think a better goal would be to get more consistently restful sleep each night, regardless of the hour it happens.

This could be another case of the classic "correlation does not equal causation" standard, though. For example, people who are artistically and musically creative often are intelligent -- they are also known for being nightowls, not necessarily because they are intelligent -- but because the lifestyle is more suited to staying up late or provides more flexibility in choosing one's schedule, which could lead people to choose to sleep late.

Well, for me it was my general health that was in better shape when I stayed up and slept in late. I was also able to maintain a better diet and workout routine because it gave me a lot more free time to work with.

^For every individual it is different, of course, I'm just pointing out that it's unlikely that staying up late would make one smarter. Although, a man ahead of his time as always, Oscar Wilde was aware of the correlation over a hundred years before any studies were done, he did say that "only dull people are brilliant over breakfast" after all!

I do tend to have my most creative moments late at night, and it is one of the reasons I have a hard time falling asleep. It seems 11pm or so is right around when my brain gets the most active and motivated. Not sure why; I've just always been like that.

Mornings blow!

True, of course, but I always like trotting that out, since it's often perceived as "better" to be an early-riser. Here's a link, btw, with some lovely charts.

No TV: This isn't that hard. Added up I'd say I've spent a third of my life without TV. For me it seems that when I don't have TV I can't imagine why I needed it, and when I do have it I don't know how I lived without it.
No coffee: In moderation, coffee is good for you.
No alcohol: same as above.
No sex: :(
No smoking: Probably the most worthy goal to aim for.
No sweats: assuming you mean "sweets," I recently gave up chocolate. Not entirely, but I've limited it to fewer than 200 cal. worth of chocolate per week. I bet you could do it!
No more procrascinating/wasting time: For me this would be the hardest.
Become fitter (lose 10 pounds): Another worthy goal, though if you're quitting smoking it'll probably be very hard to attain.
Become an early riser (getting up at 5am or sooner): Because Oscar always deserves repeating, "Only dull people are brilliant over breakfast."
Learn a new language
Lucid dreams (have at least 3): Like I mentioned earlier, Feynman wrote about training himself to dream lucidly (though he did so by accident), by paying close attention the the mental and physical processes he experienced as he fell asleep over the course of several weeks.
Quit my job: I'm planning on that too! Though not for another year most likely. Good luck.
Start blogging: Are you interesting enough?
Write a book: What kind of book are you going to write?

What's the point of all this anyway?

Agree about what you said about ebay, I do have a lot of clutter I ought to get rid off, perhaps I just might do that on ebay.

Though as far as "What's the point of it all?" goes, allow me to explain.

The short answer is just 2 words long: Better life.

The long answer: I am aiming to stretch myself beyond my current limitations, while this would have devastating in gymnastics, it infact brings about a positive outcome in area of personal achievement (or personal development - whatever you like best ).

Other reasons are primarily health, self-discipline, personal challenge, inspiration & motivation (for further effort) and many other benefits, which tend to be reveal as you progress.

Leaving my Comfort Zone

The further out you go the harder it is and we all have one. Having a comfort zone is one of the primary reasons why the vast of majority of people have a hard time changing the habits and therefore their life.

You see if I am to really achieve anything spectacular, I must go much more further out of my comfort zone than ever before.

12. Quit your job - just make sure you have a new job lined up first.

15. Earn $2500 online - doing what? If you succeed, please share with the group!

4. Abstination of sex (and masturbation) is what will increase my testosterone levels. It will also be a lot easier to build muscles while burning fat, which will eventually result in weight loss. Plus I'll be a lot more cheerful after 30 days

9. I dont work nights, sometimes perhaps, though very rarely so rising early will work out great. However there quite a few benefits. The first one would be the energetic difference. The primary way of how we wake up is when enough light (luxes) hits our eyes. We actually get a high amount of energy from the light (sun). So I can stare at the sun in morning (max 5 mins after sunrise), because the sunlight enter the orbit at a flatter angle and is thus not dangerous for the eyes.
I also love the sound of birds in the mornings, I get to catch a glimpse of nature before traffic starts to increase dramatically. And the most important one - no pre-programming. I have no established habits so early in the morning. So when I do wake up, I'll be more inclined to work on things I'd actually not have done at all.

10. Well, more true than not. Although I did hear of some suppposed genius who learned islandic language within a week and the whole things was also aired on national news station. The man served as an inspiration, to say te least.
I think I could achieve fluency in russian within 30 days, though I cant say the same for chinese (mandarin). I've completed 1/3 of the 90 days course for both russian and mandarin. However I did over 2 years ago. Talk about procrascination. Btw please let me know if your russian or know someone here that is. I'd need someone to test me after 30 days.

11. Lucid dreams - A goal you can control, though not directly right away, but rather through indirect means at first. For example keeping a dream journal, learning about your dream structure, finding patterns, setting up the right conditions and soon your able to have LD at will. I dare to say that this goal once mastered will bring more benefits than all others combined.

12. This one worries me the least.

15. I have somewhat background in advertising, while my passion is psycology. There is a range of things I could do, although honestly, I haven't fully decided yet. I'll probably do something that combines blogging, writing plus something else, with which I am aiming to kill(complete, achieve) more than two birds(goals) with one stone (btw do you know a more positive saying that conveys the same meaning). Plus I promise to share, when I succeed I'll let you know all about it, how, where and what.

Try this 30-day program:

1. No red meat.
2. No refined sugar.
3. No orgasm.

1. I actually intend not to eat any meat whatsoever, just didn't thought it was worthy of mentioning. I am very motivated to become a full time vegetarian :p, perhaps after 30 days I just might stick to it for life.

2. That's gona be a tough one. It's being added almost everywhere. Though even worse is the aparthame, that's a killer and don't get me started on GMO (genetically modified organisms) food. Codex Alimentarius, farmers being forced to buy cheaper seeds, fertilizers, etc which all "happen" to be in someway modified (either genetically or some other way).

3. I already decided I am doing this one. It's gonna be tough though, since it will also be a personal record when I achieve it.

10, 15, and 16 won't happen.

Au contraire. You'll be the first one to know when it does.
BTW What other languages beside english, do you speak fluently, if any?

Already did 16 :)

Great. What was it about if you care to share?

Think of TV as the cherry on the top (I actually added it last to the list). To be honest out of all giving up the TV, even for life, would be the easiest.

Coffee and alcohol were not consumed in moderation, at all, so ...

Smoking, yeah... just quit yesterday. There is a common stereotype that if you quit smoking you start eating (excessively). It is something that can easily be controled, we could say it does require lots of mental discipline and the abillity to not act on your urges or cravings. I'm not gonna have any problems with craving food versus a cigarette, I'm "fed up" so to speak, nonetheless good point.

Procrascinating, I don't think I could get rid of it, though I do intend to minimize it as much as possible.

Never heard of Fenyman before, I actually studied Stepthen LaBerge. I like the way you descrided his work, studying and paying close attention to his mental processes, very much into that myself. Thanks for letting me know about him. Also do you know in which book he described the above you have mentioned before?

As far as blogging goes, sure I'm interesting... if not I'll just write "5 reasons I don't like Lady Gaga" and then I'll be popular and interesting.

Good luck with your job aswell.

The book will probably on Starting your own business online. Most likely more specific, for example for people with a job or people who lack time and/or motivation to do it, something similar to that.

Conclusion

Slowly but surely. I'm getting there. Already quit smoking as I've mentioned and got up at 5 am today too. The next stop is gonna be radically different food intake.
I'll make a few more updates as we get closer to 31.03. and let you know more about the strategies and techniques I'll be using over the coming 30 days plus maybe even a secret tip or two.

Compliment or Critique - Both Welcome
:p

If you just got an idea or something you would still like to express, please do so. It just might prove to be helpful, with all these goals it ought to be a rarity indeed if I'm not forgetting something.

You all done a wonderful job so far. Thank you all for your contribution. :)

I applaud your desire to change your life for the better or improve your lot. It's always a good idea to have a plan and goals, which you have. My only reservation is that you are taking on too much at once. I find change easier to adjust to and make in small steps. I fear that you might be hoping to change too much at once. Other than that, good luck! :)

Already did 16 :)

Great. What was it about if you care to share?

It was done for the NaNoWriMo writing event during November which many of us here participated in; 50,000 words in 30 days. My story basically boils down to being a mix of sci-fi and fantasy with a steampunk setting, set in a land where magical land and technological land are at war with each other. Pretty grand in scope. My favourite character to write ended up being my dwarf who wears a pink tutu.

I have a few more for you to add to your list.

17. Slay the Nemean Lion.
18. Slay the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra.
19. Capture the Golden Hind of Artemis.
20. Capture the Erymanthian Boar.
21. Clean the Augean stables in a single day.
22. Slay the Stymphalian Birds.
23. Capture the Cretan Bull.
24. Steal the Mares of Diomedes.
25. Obtain the girdle of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons.
26. Obtain the cattle of the monster Geryon.
27. Steal the apples of the Hesperides.
28. Capture and bring back Cerberus.

I think you'll struggle with number 25. :p
