It seems as though they don't want complete unknowns in the lead roles...
And will never have any if that's the attitude they take.I hate to point this out, but Hollywood isn't exactly brimming with talented A-list Japanese actors...

Because that name brings in all the anime/sci-fi nerds who might otherwise have skipped this movie for lack of "brand recognition" so to speak.
Then why haven't they hired any so far?And will never have any if that's the attitude they take.I hate to point this out, but Hollywood isn't exactly brimming with talented A-list Japanese actors...
What, the attitude that they want to make money on their film? I hate to break it to ya, but a big budget production like this needs to have more draw than just the sci-fi/anime nerds that will flock to it and hiring A-list celebs helps with that.

Actually some of them I have never heard of.Subjectivity aside, you are familiar with all those names listed as potentials.
I wouldn't know if they were talented or not because I don't know who most of them even are.You may not think they're talented, but they put asses in seats and that's exactly what the producers are looking to do.
Mel Gibson did ok at the box office with a subtitled movie. To be honest, if I had my way, they'd all be Japanese and the movie would be subtitled. But be realistic - that's not going to happen on a production with a high price tag.

heh, I doubt the Hollywood version of Akira is gonna end up being anything like "weird ass" more like by the numbers/cookie cutter...Mel Gibson didn't make a weird ass movie based on a weird ass Japanese sci-fi manga story.
So it's okay to hire a black guy to play Heimdall the White God, but it's not okay to hire a white guy to play an Asian character. Gotcha.
Hooray for racism! I knew it wouldn't take long for this kind of thread to show up.
I don't think it was okay to hire a black guy for Heimdall, either. Racism has nothing to do with it. People put waaaaay to broad a brush on "racism."
