Narnia 3 aka Voyage of the Dawn Treader - Grade,Review,Speculate

"Magician's Nephew" is actually my favorite Narnia book. It was the only one that felt a little more complicated and had some truly creepy moments on that dead world. Plus it had a strong villain as I distantly recall. I've only read them once 10 years ago.

It's my favorite as well. Now to be clear the article above says that Walden and Fox are talking about the movie. It's not been green lit yet.

I'm much more excited about this than I would be about TSC. I still don't get the excitement about TSC, as while it has a couple of good points it felt very episodic to me, much less epic in scope than LWW or Prince Caspian. Of course, any of them would feel less epic than Magician's Nephew, with the obvious exception of The Last Battle.

Color me "meh" about The Magician's Nephew as well. I'm perfectly happy to see more Narnia and I'll enjoy Magician's Nephew, but they had such a great Eustace I was really looking forward to more of him (and whoever they picked for Jill). Maybe - maybe - they'll properly promote this one and it'll be enough of a hint to warrant Silver Chair (and maybe then Horse and His Boy and The Last Battle?)

I'm a bit perplexed on a few levels why they may want to do The Magicians Nephew next. They have a Eustace and best case scenario if they started filming this year it would be 3-4yrs before filming on a presumed TSC movie. Eustace as an actor is going to physically change quite a bit and the actor grew on me in that role. The iron is hot to do TSC next as far as having a lead in place and seemingly well liked by those who saw VOTDT.

I get that they could use Tilda as the White Witch again with ease but you need to recast everyone else and I don't think Eustace was going to command much money relative to budget anyway. I get that this could serve as a reintroduction point for some moviegoers but lets keep it real it's a Narnia 4 and you either want to see it or you don't. You as a moviegoer have predecided based on 3 movies if your going to see it. At best it might bring some back but not likely get new people to sample the franchise.

Be curious to keep following this.

Going back and doing The Magician's Nephew before The Silver Chair doesn't make a ton of sense to me, either. I would have expected them to do The Silver Chair to finish the Caspian trilogy, then make The Magician's Nephew as both an origin story and a finale, because The Horse and His Boy has no significant connection to the overall storyline and The Last Battle would not be a fun movie at all.

I can also understand them wanting to bring back Tilda, too, but isn't there already a villainess in The Silver Chair with a connection to the White Witch that Tilda could have played?

Not explicitly, though a number of people seem determined to link Jadis to all evil in Narnia. Heh.

The Lady in the Green Kirtle has become linked with the White Witch in popular imagination (the BBC production using the same actress helped with this) but there's no indication that Lewis intended a link between them. Still, there'd be nothing wrong with changing that for the films.

Also regarding The Horse and His Boy - it may not be the most connected but it does feature three of the Pevensies - and depending on how things go, potentially the actors would be the right ages for their roles in it.

The fact that the article sarcastically (although maybe correctly) suggests that there is an overseas audience is seeing this franchise now is making me think that part of the reason is that London will be heavily featured in "The Magician's Nephew" and they could use on location shooting to perhaps save a few bucks. If they went in the direction of "The Silver Chair" they'd be dropping a wad of cash on special effects and CGI in post production. Now Charn is of course shown in TMN so maybe my theory gets tossed out the window. Until we get actual confirmation of the projection along with a reason why they are going in this direction...this is all speculation. Personally I'm just glad we're getting another movie at all.

They'll probably end up doing the whole series as long as the series keeps making money and they keep the budget down for these movies.

In cameo roles. They'd be in it as much as the white witch is in this movie, so I hardly think it matters. Everything else would be new roles, so it doesn't seem to me that so much importance should be put on them. They aren't the stars of that particular story.

Would rather see The Silver Chair, but am more than glad to go watch The Magician's Nephew.

It does kind of puzzle me though. There are SO many hints to The Silver Chair in The Voyage of Dawn Treader - the most obvious being the shout-out to Jill at the end.

Hopefully, if it gets green-lit, they will properly promote this one and The Silver Chair can get made afterwords.

Hmmm, I still think they're very minor roles. I read the book recently and they came off being cameos rather than supporting roles.

Walden Media announces The Magicians Nephew

"We are starting to talk to Fox and talk to the CS Lewis estate now about the Magician's Nephew being our next film," said Michael Flaherty of Walden Media, which owns the screen rights to the Narnia series. "If we can all agree to move forward, then what we would do is find someone to write the script. So, it could still be a couple of years."

Perhaps the fact that it could be a couple of years is why they aren't pursuing TSC...the returning actors (can't recall whether there's any besides Eustace, admittedly) might already be too old by that point?
