I know what a merkin is. It’s often part of an in-joke, as in Anthony Newley’s godawful vanity film Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness? and President Merkin Muffley (a double sexual meaning) in Dr. Strangelove.

Now that women are shaving or waxing all the time apparently quite a few are horrified at what they see in the mirror, hence the rise in genital surgery to "trim" the inner labia so it matches what you see in porn (which is all airbrushed but no one cares). Stuff isn't as visible under pubic hair.

The idea of a man with shaved pubes completely grosses me out.

According to the trivia The Bank Job which came in 2008, the extras in a scene set in a brothel had to be fitted with merkins because the producers were going for a period (no pun intended) look and brazillians and landing strips weren't the around in the early 70s.
