Lt Commander Shelby

Photon

Commodore

Wondering how she would have worked out as an addition to DS9? She would bring an interesting dynamic, much like Ro Laren. Thoughts?

I never particularly cared for Shelby, as her character was pretty much created to be a foil for Riker, who we were all supposed to love and be rooting for. I'm glad we never saw her again.

What would a Borg expert be doin' on DS9? Not like they did a lot of research & development into Borg defense & offense. And even though the Defiant was the first in a line of ships to be used against the Borg, all Chief O'Brien would have to do was forward his additions & improvements to the Borg R&D folks.

If they couldn't use Locarno on VOY, I doubt they would have gotten away with usin' Shelby.

DS9 was able to use O'Brien from TNG and the only thing that prevented them from using Ro was the actress who played her...

It may have to do with O'Brien bein' used in more than one episode, or something, while a TNG character before goin' on to DS9. He wasn't just the brainchild of a single writer or writin' team.

Shelby was in a two-parter and Locarno was in one episode only.

Actually, as I understand if they used Locarno on Voyager, they would have had to pay the writer(s) of The First Duty royalties.

Assuming the same applied to Shelby, it might have been a non-issue since Shelby appeared in a two-parter written by Michael Piller, co-creator of the series.

Ya don't think Berman & Taylor would get mad about Piller gettin' a bonus for usin' Shelby?

Or that he'd get to keep collectin' a check after he moved on to other projects?

Personally, I kind of thought it would have been cool if Shelby had taken command of the Voyager...

I've always thought this too. Shelby was already established to some extent and would've been a great tie to TNG, being associated with perhaps TNG's greatest episode. I think it definitely would've added more resonance to the Borg episodes.

Plus I think she could've had an interesting arc, established in TNG, that I would've liked to see.

I was rooting for Riker being replaced with Shelby the first time I saw it.

Shelby is great, would have loved to have seen more of her.

Would he get a bonus or would it simply fall under the category of his royalties as one of the show's creators? The situation with Nick Locarno was that none of the show's creators created that particular character and royalties would have to be paid to the people who did every time it was used.
Or that he'd get to keep collectin' a check after he moved on to other projects?
Isn't that pretty much how it works in general?

Royalties can add up, ya know...and havin' Shelby on VOY would have given Piller just that much more than the other two. Its not like Rick Berman every wrote an episode...

^^^
But Rick Berman was the boss, though. He wouldn't be paid more than Berman, tha's fer sure.

But as I asked before, wouldn't Piller's use of Shelby simply fall under his general royalties as co-creator? Why would he be paid more for using Shelby than the other characters he created?

Two episodes of Shelby were more than enough for me too. She may have had a limited purpose, but I find endless obnoxiousness creates a wearing dynamic, not an interesting one.

I had a job where my shift supervisor, who was paid by the hour, made more than our department head, who was paid a salary, thanks to his overtime.

Sometimes bein' the boss sucks.

I don't think that was the case with Berman and his production staff. It was probably good to be the king.

Since they continued to credit him as an "Executive Consultant" after he left until the show ended, I think he was pulling a check after he moved on. The same is true of Jeri Taylor.

She was obnoxious and worried about her career when she should have been more worried about being turned into a Borgette.

Maybe she had so much confidence in Starfleet (however misguided it was) that she didn't worry about that as a threat to her individually.
