Is it ok to have sex with holograms?

Sorry! I had some thoughts that came to me at different times.... I didn't mean to cause any trouble!

Anyway, if you don't make such a big deal, by making it illegal, a lot of people are going to seek doctor's help because they're not as ashamed of it. And a lot of people find some way to challenge the authority or test their courage and bravery some way or another (because we are constantly seeking to better ourselves and livelihood and to feel important and wanted), so by making it illegal, some people would do it just for the joy of breaking the laws. That's why a lot of people love to eat very hot and spicy food to test their courage and bravery. Some people likes sky diving.... And some just loves Sci-fi because it makes them feel special! [laugh] Everyone needs a hobby and to do something to relieve the manifestation of stress to make them feel important and wanted.

Yes. Yes it is.

Holograms are nothing more than computer programmes, designed to do whatever the person who made them wanted. In that respect they'd be just like sex dolls.

Besides, with the door to the holosuite locked, who would ever find out? ;)

The guy cleaning the holosuites? :barf2:

And living out those extremely dark is some how the same as seeking to better ourselves and livelihood?

I believe the general term for them is anarchist. So are you suggesting that if the gov't removed the seat belt law that everyone will automatically wear seat belts?

Let me ask you something else. There is a push right now for the government to regulate salt and fat contents in processed foods that we can purchase off the shelf. What is your take on that?

To me, regulating salt and fat contents is very similar to regulating the type of extreme violent/sexual materials that can be legally acquired. These are both are good ideas.

I think the term for people who likes doing that kind of weird stuff would be mental illness. So, if they are not as ashamed of it, more like than not, they will seek help on their own.

And I don't mean anarchists.... I mean some people do little stuff, like, obtaining illegal firecrackers, souped-up their car, or speed.... Normal...yeah?

And these diet fads are just fads...nothing more. All the heart problems and diabetes are genetics. So, if You have the genes for heart disease you'll have to pill and take insulin if you have diabetes. No amount of exercise will prevent it or cure it. May be it'll delay it if you exercise, but you will get it, if you have the genes.

It's not governments job to save us from ourselves.

^^ This.

Those are both BAD ideas. Adults should have the freedom to choose what to put into their own bodies, and what to put into their own minds as well. The state has no right to compel any person to act in his own best interest.

Of course your freedom stops when you're harming, endangering and annoying others around you.

This is perhaps the most epic thread in recent history!

I have pondered the concept of 'Artificial Sexuality' on the Holodeck, but i've never been able to grasp how it works

That goes without saying. It’s at the core of social libertarian philosophy. Your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins.

Of course, the tricky part is that some people have longer arms than others . . . and longer noses. :)

Even though in the cases of seat belts, salt/fat content, extremely perverted sexual/violent material, acting in a person's own best interest aligns with a society's best interest?

*Possibly* Less traffic fatalities to weight down the first responders, less heart related diseases to weight down the health care system, and less sexual deviants to roam the streets and hurt others?

I understand that there is no way to enforce such regulations absolutely, but that doesn't translate into abandoning any attempts at any regulations.

When is the door ever locked, on rare occasions sure, but usually when it won't open it's because it malfunctining. By observation other pepole can just walk in any time they wish.

Maybe that's part of the thrill, the possibility that someone will do just that ... walk in on you.

But then you get into the question as to what is "extreme." I mean sure, you can provide examples from the far end of the spectrum, but where is the knifed edge dividing line? And do you really want the government (i.e. the fuck-up factory) making that level of discision?

Where is the line between essentually harmless fantasy / emotional release - and - practicing for the eventual "real thing?"

Today, even without holodecks, we have socially acceptable violence in the form of sporting competitions, with the participants entering the events willingly. But in the holodeck as well (again) the only participant is also willing.

Some people in any society are going to believe that all sexually material is unacceptable, on a scale of zero through a hundred, extreme and graphic begins at "one."

Some holo activity if discovered likely would be a indication that some individuals should be counciled, but not that they should be complelled to do so by Big Sister. Yes, the option can be placed in front of them, and children coudd have the decision made for them by their parent (the state is not anyones "parents.")

I can't imagine a single thing that someone couldn't, wouldn't, or shouldn't do in a holodeck. No level of insanity, depravity, or perversion would be off limits. Fancy your cousin? Shag her away in the holodeck. Hate your boss? Beat him to an inch of his life with a ball-bat in the holodeck. Want to have a threesome with your brother and his wife? Have at it!

If you can imagine it, why not? No one to harm, and it's all you and you alone.

I imagine that in the 24th century, a person's holodeck habits would be a taboo subject for discussion. I imagine it would be considered an intensely private, personal issue and not approprioate to ask about or discuss in public.

True, it'd probably just be frowned upon.

How far do we go in regulating personal behavior in the interests of society at large? To reduce health care costs, do we outlaw sports that have a high rate of injuries? Should we ban tobacco? Alcohol? (Oh, right — we tried that one already. Didn’t work too well.)

First of all, so instead of trying to figure out how far we should go to regulate those activities, we should simply abandon all attempts at regulations, period? That certainly seems like the case that some of your are arguing. Last time I checked, there are still strict regulations on both tobacco and alcohol products.

Secondly, my line in the sand is very clear. Regulations on the dissemination of any materials or objects that exist for the explicit purpose of facilitating and furthering the fantasy of Rape, Torture, and Murder. Nothing more, nothing less. These fantasies are ONLY about hurting other people. If these fantasies spill over into reality, lives are destroyed

Finally, please just answer this one question: If you were a teacher, manager that comes across essays, emails where your student or employee extensively fantasizes about murdering a fellow student or raping a fellow coworkers, what will you do about it?

If your honest answer is "Do nothing. Its not within my right to question or interfere and I'm sure things will work out for the better on their own" then we simply have to agree to disagree and I will cease my contribution into this discussion.

OK, so how does one ensure that fantasy remains fantasy? People can evidently think what they like, or feel what they like, everything is free in life. But before people cry nanny state, the fact is that anti-social behaviour at the outset often manifests in "extreme" fantasy.

Also, what about persons who exhibit similar traits to Reg Barclay? Reg seemed to me, though I'm not a mental health professional, if he had avoidant personality disorder, perhaps even higher functioning autism. A holodeck to him, or somebody with his conditions, would be a gold mine.

The issue of regulations is silly, since practically all human activity in some sense is regulated. If I play football/soccer, and barge the keeper into the net as he collects a cross, should I protest to FIFA since their regulations/laws of football are to me unjust and I was denied a rightful goal? Of course not. Human nature and the human condition is as is, people will abuse things and take advantage of things as they arise.

I am sure that a holodeck could be 'locked' so that no one could walk in uninvited. A person's private quarters can be (we see this all the time, a character says "enter" and only then will the door open for a guest) so a holodeck/suite could also be protected that way.
