2011-12 pilots: fairy tales, guy comedies, period dramas & singing

Analysis of this years' pilot season.

...a few trends quickly emerge, namely: manhood is under siege, parents are obsessed with meddling, zombies are alive and well (relatively speaking), opposites attract, and just about everybody seems to be on some sort of rebound. Moreover, pretty much every permutation of domestic life and dysfunction is being trotted out for a once-over as the networks seek to uncover the next Modern Family or Two and a Half Men. And the popularity of Glee has helped to inspire a musical bent for three pilots.
Running pilot list for broadcast networks.

Looks like ABC and FOX did the best job this year. My favorites by network:

ABC

Halleluljah - Drama set in the town of Hallelujah, Tenn., which is being torn apart by the forces of good and evil and whose fortunes change when a mysterious, charming drifter (Jesse L. Martin) arrives in town bringing justice, peace and possibly faith.

Pro: Rare show with a non-white lead. Con: Gospel music can get annoying.

The River - Horror drama in the mold of Paranormal Activity that centers on a family that travels to deep in the Amazon region to locate and rescue their missing father.

Pro: We need more horror on TV (NBC's lineup doesn't count). Con: If they insist on giggly cam, it could wear out its welcome fast.

Poe - A crime procedural following Edgar Allan Poe, the world’s very first detective, as he uses unconventional methods to investigate dark mysteries in 1840s Boston.

Pro: It's different. Is Lee Pace too tall for the lead? Con: Somehow I can't see this one surviving pilot season, much less in the Nielsens.

Grace
- Dysfunctional family drama set in the world of professional dance, telling the story of a famed choreographer (Eric Roberts) who sleeps with his dancers and has three daughters with different mothers – with one of the daughters stepping in as manager to save dad’s dance studio.

Pro: Just watched All That Jazz for the first time - if that's the idea, I'm sold. Con: Can Eric Roberts carry a show? I'd rather see someone like Peter Coyote in the lead.

Don't Trust the Bitch in Apt 23 - An earnest, optimistic girl from the heartland (Dreama Walker) is forced to move in with a sexy, unstable New York City party girl (Krysten Ritter) who has the morals of a pirate.

Pro: Krysten Ritter should steal the show. Con: May be too girly/catty, and they'll have to lose the name. :(

CBS

Person of Interest
- Crime drama centered on an ex-CIA agent, presumed dead, who teams up with a reclusive billionaire to prevent violent crimes in New York City.

Pro: Michael Emerson plays the billionaire. Con: This sounds like a fun, out-of-control vigilante scenario but on CBS it could end up too vanilla. Tossup: Jim Caveziel has just been cast as the CIA agent; does he have the edge for the role?

NBC

REM - An Inception-style thriller centering on a cop (Jason Isaacs) who wakes up after an accident to find he is living in two different realities.

Pro: Mindfuck scenarios are usually fun. Con: Jason Isaacs strikes me as more the character actor/supporting type than the lead. A lot depends on who else is in the cast. Also, change the name back to Sand Men.

17th Precinct
- Fantasy drama set in the fictional town of Excelsior, where magic and supernatural elements rule over science.

Pro: Ron Moore usually comes up with interesting stuff; Stockard Channing is great in anything. Con: Stop casting so many BSG vets, it's too distracting! Two is enough. :rommie: Also, that's a terrible name.

Grimm - Dark but fantastical cop drama about a world in which characters inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales exist, starring David Giuntoli as a detective who starts to see humans as beast/animals and discovers he has a mandate to protect “humans” from the beasts.

Pro: If this scenario is about the creatures that inspired fairy tales rather than fairy tales themselves, it could be a lot of fun rather than corny. Con: I can't see NBC picking up this and 17th Precinct both.

Brave New World - Workplace comedy that follows a group of unusual characters at Pilgrim Village, a theme park that specializes in recreations of New England in 1637.

Pro: With a premise like that, how can they miss? Ed Begley Jr. should be a hoot. Con: Can't think of one, unless it's that the premise is too limited.

FOX

Exit Strategy
- Spy thriller about a team of five experts deployed by the CIA after an operation goes bad to extract the involved agents before it’s too late, with Ethan Hawke and Megan Dodds playing the leads.

Pro: I'm in the market for a solid kick-ass action series. Ethan Hawke is a good choice for the lead. Con: Could get repetitive.

Touch - A father (Kiefer Sutherland) discovers that his autistic, mute son is communicating with him through a complex series of numbers and may even be able to predict events before they happen.

Pro: Kiefer Sutherland. Con: Could be mawkish.

Alcatraz - A crime drama set at the country’s most infamous prison on Alcatraz Island and involving a team investigating the mysterious disappearance of its 1960s inhabitants in the present.

Pro: Interesting, diverse cast (Sam Neill, Jorge Garcia, Parminder Nagra) and it sounds different. Con: Hard to tell right now what it's really about. Period drama in flashbacks? Sci fi? Relatively straightforward cop show?

Locke & Key - A suspense thriller based on the graphic novel of the same name by Joe Hill, following a family in crisis as it moves into a haunted house full of “secrets, dangers and wondrous opportunities.”

Pro: Interesting scenario, love the cast (Miranda Otto, Nick Stahl, Sara Bolger), my favorite broadcast pilot this year. Con: Cancellation bait.

CW

Well, if I have to choose one...

Secret Circle - Based on the book from the The Vampire Diaries author L.J. Smith, drama tells the story of a young woman (Britt Robertson) who moves to a new town and discovers that not only is she a witch and part of a secret coven, but also the key that will unlock a centuries-old battle of good vs. evil.

Pro: Rooting for witches to kick the vampires' pasty asses. There will be vampires, right? Con: Inevitable witch-vampire-werewolf love triangle.

That's just for broadcast. I'll go dig up some info on cable pilots because they're always the most interesting.

I could be wrong but I don't remember reading anything about vampires and werewolves being involved with TSC...just magic. I am looking forward to it mainly because of Britt Robertson...loved her on Life Unexpected. :)

Other than Wonder Woman(which you don't have listed) & TSC...none of these shows interest me.

I thought about mentioning Wonder Woman, but I'm only mildly curious about it. I didn't want that list to get ridiculous. :rommie:

If Secret Circle is vampire-free, I just might check it out for real.

Forget Poe, they just fucked up the lead. :rommie: They cast that boring kid who had the lead in Kings. Wrong looks, totally wrong for the part. He was too bland to pull off a straight-up action hero role, I don't see how he could possibly be right for a role that's gotta be a lot trickier (plus, he's way too healthy to remotely resemble Poe.) They should have gone for the other guy, who played the in-the-closet prince.

Looks like ABC could be making a comeback if they find something to air that's decent other than Modern Family.

From my perspective, all the networks need to start over from scratch in the hopes of airing something worth watching. :rommie: But ABC does have the best overall pilot lineup, followed by FOX. NBC has a lot of stuff, but a lower proportion of stuff that sounds good. CBS and CW are quite obviously not being programmed for the likes of me.

These are all of the CW pilots for 2011-2012...

'Hart of Dixie.' From Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage ('Gossip Girl'), 'Dixie' follows a New York City doctor who inherits a practice in a small Southern town. According to TVLINE, look for pleny of quirky characters.

'Heavenly.' From Richard Hatem ('Supernatural'), the legal drama follows the team of a young female attorney and a former angel who tackle cases together. The former angel is now human and named Dashiel Coffee.

'Awakening.' A coming of age tale about two sisters ... who are also in the midst of a zombie uprising. William Laurin ('1-800-Missing'), Glenn Davis, Howard T. Owens, Carolyn Bernstein and Todd Cohen are executive producing.

'Cooper & Stone.' The cop drama follows two detectives, who are also best friends. They love talking pop culture and fashion just as much as solving homicides. Laurie Arent ('Boomtown,' 'Life') is executive producing.

'Danni Lowinksi.' A spinoff/remake of the original German series about a hairdresser who open up her own place to pay for law school.

'The Secret Circle.' An adaptation of the book series from the same author of The Vampire Diaries with Kevin Williamson serving as the exec producer.

They should have ordered the Raven(DC Comics) pilot...I am not sure what is up with that or at least something with a comic superhero...I also thought Blue Beetle would have been considered.

Anything like Gossip Girl or 90210 is a waste.

[edit] and CBS also has 'Ringer' starring Sarah Michelle Gellar...I have a thread here; http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=138462

Ringer, written on spec by Supernatural writer-producers Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder, centers on a troubled young woman (Gellar) who, while on the run from the mob, hides out by inhabiting the life of her wealthy twin sister, until she learns that her twin’s life has a bounty on it as well. Brillstein's Peter Traugott is executive producing, with Gellar, Charmelo and Snyder co-executive producing. Geller, repped by ICM and Brillstein's Joanne Colonna, has been heavily pursued by the broadcast networks since the end of Buffy in 2003. Her only TV gig since then had been the HBO pilot The Wonderful Maladys. Charmelo and Snyder, who are story editors on Supernatural, are with UTA and the Shuman Co.
Life Unexpected’s Kristoffer Polaha Joins Ringer

The description of the Danni Lowinski pilot is wrong, she's not trying to pay for law school, she finished law school but no one is hiring her, so he opens up er own one-woman practice in a Mall kiosk.
The german version is pretty funny and has likable characters, it could work on the CW.

Blame the person from the CW Lounge...
I am, I know you just copied it. ;)

I just thought it was weird that the description completely messed up the premise of the show.

I really hope they pick it up, it has the potential to be a good show and it is perfect for a no-budget network like The CW.

The only show I had an interest in is Secret Circle...the rest of them just don't appeal to me...If the German version of 'Danni Lowinski' is really good that will mean the CW version will be mediocre at best.

Some of those shows sound interesting but I'll be damned if I'm going to watch any of them until I'm sure they'll survive a season or two.

Right now I am looking at...

Ringer (CBS) Mainly cause of Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Poe (ABC) This just seems off the wall enough for ABC it might work.
Wonder Woman (NBC) I would be done with this network...but I really want to see this.
Alcatraz (FOX) Seems interesting.
The Secret Circle (CW) Britt Robertson stars and Kevin Williamson producing...hoping it is as good as TVD.

There's been some interesting casting news since I last chimed in, with notable cast members that really elevate the odds of success:

Halleluljah - Evil Terry O'Quinn vs Good Donal Logue.

17th Precinct
- In addition Stockard Channing, Eamonn Walker and half the cast of BSG, they've got Esai Morales now.

Grimm - 17th Precinct's fairy-tale-cop-show competition also has an interesting array of character actors: Sasha Roiz, Reggie Lee and Silas Weir Mitchell. I've never heard of the lead, David Giuntoli, but he's a hotty. :bolian:

And Natasha Henstridge is in on The Secret Circle.

The casting has been great so far for this show. :)

The high mortality rate of shows just makes it all the more imperative that they have great casts, because then just watching the show from week to week is the reward. So what if they never finish the story? You've still had fun watching it. Anyway, maybe more shows will be like Caprica and at least shoehorn in some excuse for an ending rather than just leaving us hanging.

PS, Cherry Jones (who was so good as President Taylor on 24) is in REM.
