TrekBBS vs. the Music

^ Hey Jetfire, nice new avatar! I'm not even that big of a fan of Seven, and I love it! Great job! :techman:

I would review your songs except that I think I took them last time. I did peek at them though - interesting picks, especially that first one. Normally, I am not really a pop fan, but
occasionally, believe it or not, I do get a hankering for one of those 'guilty pleasure' boy bands. Most of the time when that happens I grab one of those 'Best of the Backstreet Boys' sorts of collections I have lying around here someplace, listen once thru, and I'm good for another several months. But I do like that song you posted. Thought I would point that out since I'm sure it surprises you!

Thanks! :)

Well the first song...I like but I don't like the group...but love the song. The second song I heard at a club and found out who did it and liked it but I normally don't like that type of music...the 3rd song I like alot and love the movie and rest of the songs from that film.

N-Sync: This I Promise You
Gahhh! Noooo.... middle school/high school memories coming back. Yeah, I was the right age to be an N=Sync hater. Sorry, but that's gonna factor in to things. I respect Timberlake now, but... Ok, anyway, sorry - look at the song itself. I feel much the same as I did when I looked at whoever posted the Enrique song. There's nothing really *bad* about it, or at least nothing that stands out enough for me to point at. It's mostly just... boring and bland. Good, important sentiments, but I don't think I can separate my own visceral reaction from the song itself, sorry. 3/10

Disney (?): I'll Fly With You
It starts off pretty slow and very low-key. It's also got something of a rough, unpolished sound (the singing I mean) and I'm not sure if that's intentional or not. The music is nice enough for what it is, but doesn't really do much of anything, just kinda makes a sort of pleasant filler in the background. The voices of the singers are nice enough too. It's pleasant enough and I wouldn't go out of my way to turn it off, but nor would I really seek out more; it's really "backgroundy". Call it a 6/10 As a note: I assume there's an actual group that did this song?

Brother Bear - No Way Out
I've never seen this movie; it looked kinda vaguely interesting but didn't really catch my interest. This song is nice enough, and becomes a bit more interestng as it goes along. Though a part of that is the imagery in the video I'll admit. There's nothing really "standout-ish" for the song for me; one of those nice pleasant songs that's enjoyable to listen to but don't really stick with me. Again, not something I'd turn off, but not something I'd really seek out more of. 6/10 Maybe seeing the movie would make it more memorable though.

Lower scores than normal for me... :(

Anyway, my three:

^
Yeah I am not a fan of N'Sync...but I do like that song.
Song 2 is Gigi D'Agostino. He does techno and dance music.
Song 3 is of course Phil Collins...all of his songs from Brother Bear are really great...I love that movie. :)

^ Fair enough about "This I Promise You." Would D'Agostino's song be "trance"? And I thought I recognized Phil Collins. Movie's worth checking out eh?

^
Yeah most of Gigi D'Agostino's music fits into techno category...including trance. Brother Bear is a great film...worth watching. :bolian:

1. 99 Red Balloons - Goldfinger
I'm more familiar with the original Nena version, but this is an interesting cover. It's not a flat cover, which is good, and the band definitely introduce some beats onto it. I like that they did the second verse in German. I'm not sure which version I prefer now. 9/10

2. Fairytale of New York - The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl
Love this! Best Christmas song ever, imo. It's just so beautiful, and it doesn't have to be Christmas to listen to this. A timeless classic. 10/10

3. Gethsemane
From a musical, I see. It's a really good live performance, and at some moments the song is quite touching. The singer has a really good voice, the only thing I can say against it is that it's not really my type of music. 8/10

We have spectacularly different taste in music, it seems, so this was an interesting collection for broadening my horizons!

Tinie Tempah - Wonderman ft. Ellie Goulding
Having poured scorn on Tinie Tempah before, I must say I rather enjoyed this one. Considerably less obnoxious than usual and Goulding sets it off nicely. 7/10

Far East Movement - Rocketeer
Enjoyed this, again more than I've heard from them before (I saw an image macro comparing the lyrics of Stairway to Heaven with Like a G6 and that's all I can think off now when I hear it  ). Thsi one's a lot closer to my taste, albeit still with the 'tics' of the genre ('come on, come on, lets go!, here we go, go!... oh just get on with it! ;) ) 6/10

Take That - Kidz
Might I take a guess at your theme? Because this is a third by an artist I'd expect something quite different from. I enjoyed this one, it's quite fun and besides, the comments section reminds me that "Anyone who dislikes this song is a gaddafi supporter!". So, in true patriotic spirit, 8/10

My three (and I haven't checked the whole thread so apologies for any repetition):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smiFk6KHr_8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qF_qbaWt3Q
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt2x9RjJuLM

Actually, yes, all of them are done by artists who have at the very least, done something completely different in the past, but the theme I was going for is that all three, despite being current chart hits, all have a sci-fi theme.

Wonderman has the stars and superhero style thing.
Rocketeer has the title, well, Rocketeer, and the chorus at least, could easily be the theme tune of Enterprise. Better than Faith of The Heart in any case. The video also includes a jetpack.
And as for Kidz, the song's subject matter is some sort of political commentary about the future of humanity, and the video depicts an alien invasion (of a sort). Very Doctor Who-esque.

Nightwish - While Your Lips Are Still Red
A little too melodramatic for me. Definitely a European style Metal ballad. Sometimes they work, but I'm not a fan. They're usually a little slow for my tastes, too soft to be metal, and too metal to be a genuine beautiful song. 2/5

Linkin Park - Waiting for the End
Wow, Linkin Park sure sounds different these days. I liked the beginning. Then when main verses started and it tries to sound soft and sentimental, I think it falls apart a bit. I know they're style of music is no longer popular, but I'm not sure they really can adapt. 2/5

Edguy - Trinidad
I've heard a little bit of Edguy before, but it sounded absolutely different than this song. He sounds kinda like a cross between Axil Rose and Steven Tyler here. It's a very cheerful song. Very poppy. Not bad, but there's nothing wowing me either. 3/5.

This comment makes me curious as to your opinion of Linkin Park. I mean, as a whole. I don't think many of their songs have been posted in this thread, and I'd really like to know what others think about them.

1. Eagles of Death Metal - Cherry Cola

I'd never heard these guys' music before today (although I have heard of them). When I first read the band name, I thought (as I had in the past, which is why I'd not heard any of their songs) "Oh great - a screaming band". So I was pleasantly surprised when they were not. Or at least were not in this particular song.

I'm not sure I like the backing vocals (the Cherry Cola thing they have going on back there)...but overall, this was a lot better than I expected it to be when I read the title. 7/10

2. Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Never heard of these guys, and never heard this song. But I liked this one. Catchy song, good riffs, entertaining lyrics, fun to listen to - I was bobbin' my little head as I was typing along here. I will be checking out other stuff from these guys, for sure! After maybe Foo Fighters covering Prince's Darling Nikki, which was a thread highlight for me ( :p ), this might be one of the best songs I've heard in this thread that I'd not heard before. 9/10

3. The Killers - Jenny Was a Friend of Mine
Standard alt rock song. I liked it - not anything 'bad' about it...but I wouldn't buy their record based on this. They just sort of sound like everybody else here (except that they maybe use more techno than is usual for alt rock - something I can't decide if I like or not. Do they typically use a fair bit of techno?) Anyway, not bad at all...but not anything that would make me buy the record, since I have so many records already that sound sorta like this. 8/10

For mine this time, I'm gonna post some chillaxing music...since I'm sort of in the mood for it myself:

You know, the first time I heard these guys was on this board a few months ago, in the 'What are you listening to?' thread in Misc, I think. I can't remember the song I heard in that thread, but while I was listening to that song, I was scanning down the right column of suggestions, and couldn't resist a cover of...wait for it.....Phantom of the Opera.

Have to say, it was one of the most bizarre 'covers' I've ever heard in my life. You gotta love a Finnish 'symphonic metal' (I think that's what they call themselves) band covering Andrew Lloyd Webber! I mean, I can hardly imagine what possessed them to do that.

Still, ya gotta give 'em points for originality. I think they might be the only band in the history of the 'verse who do what they do. I mean, symphonic METAL???? :wtf:

In fact, here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VgLKXD-BoY&feature=related

Now tell me that isn't the wildest frakkin' thing you ever saw in your life.

Those wacky Finns!

I bet Andrew Lloyd Webber never imagined in a million years that his song would be covered by a guy who braids his beard.

Lol I'm a huge Nightwish fan, have everything they've ever done, and Phantom of the Opera was right up their alley in their early days where they were in essence a metal opera band. They also covered Walking in the Air from The Snowman. These days they're a bit straighter symphonic metal.
The style isn't that unusual really, there have been numerous copycats over the years, and some of the style of metal band coupled with a operatic female singer has crept into the mainstream with Evanescence. The style is very popular in the Scandinavian countries, Nightwish and others of similar ilk chart there.
This was the only song that ever proved popular to the general public in the US: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueiOqaSvHp0

Well, I was 13 when Hybrid Theory came out. At the time I didn't know many other bands, so, by comparison, they were a hell of a lot better than Limp Bizkit. In reflection, I'm OK with them as angry rap rock if I'm in the mood for that. But they're fairly one note overall. Since NuMetal is essentially dead, they've been trying to change their sound, but I think all that does is kill what was unique about them.

About the name (from Wikipedia):
Despite the name, Eagles of Death Metal are not a death metal band. Hughes said that a friend was trying to introduce Josh Homme to the death metal genre. When he played a song by the Polish band Vader and made a claim that the song was death metal, Homme called them "The Eagles of Death Metal". After hearing this phrase, he wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like.

It's also another band with Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures).

I'm sad to say that I've never really attempted to find out more of their music. This was one of those songs that got a lot of attention during the 90s and has still stuck around, but, sadly, they never had any other luck with their singles. Actually, weirdly enough, the first time I heard this song, it was included in a Weird Al Polka. But it's such a smart, catchy song that I consider it one of the greatest gems of the 90s.

Eagles of Death Metal came and played in a weird little 500 capacity venue in the Cornish seaside town I live in last year. It was weird cause on that visit to the country they only played 2 gigs, one in London, and one in the ass end of nowhere in Cornwall.

It was a sell out and they put on a fucking amazing show. I think maybe they were just on holiday here, as it is a very nice spot, and wanted a way to pay for it, as the singer's family came out on stage at the end, his litle kids and everything. Amazing gig though, I rate it amongst the best I have seen, especially for the random nature of it.

There's no Death Metal at all though, or anything even vaguely like it, most of the songs are spontaneous sounding ditties about the singers life. Very light hearted stuff.

Copycats???? Of these guys???? Incredible. I mean, copying these guys would have been so painfully obvious that I wouldn't think anyone would have the balls. I mean, to me...and band like this??? There can BE only one. Because copying them....nah....just wouldn't work. Seems to me as if anyone else doing this would come across as merely a cheap knock-off.

A couple more comments -

1. That female singer (who, if I remember correctly from the Wiki article I read after being so utterly stunned by the cover of Phantom of the Opera, has left the band??) is excellent. I mean, she seriously COULD do quite well in an ALW show. No kidding...one day she could be singing with a band like this...and the next, find herself in the touring company of CATS or something.

2. I had never heard that song you linked to that did okay here in the U.S. I'm not surprised I'd not heard it....but I can definitely see why it would do okay here. I mean, I don't think we Americans know what to do with a band like this because they can't be put into one of our existing categories - they are their own category. But that song you linked to is more typically metal...and these guys are very talented...so I can see it doing well.

In the meantime, I'm about 2-3 months past my 'discovery' of these guys, and I'm still blown away by that PotO cover. I really like ALW...but it never in a million years occurred to me that a metal band would ever cover any of his music. It just blows my mind. Still. That video link to PotO? I just watched it again and STILL think it is trippy as hell.

Okay. Thanks.

The reason I ask is because I've never been able to get into these guys. Not now...and not even when they came out and everyone was going crazy for them. I guess just not my thing. But I was curious what others thought.

So Josh Homme is in this band TOO? How many bands is that guy IN?

Now, granted, I've only heard this one song, since until this point, I was avoiding them based purely on that name (and I never connected the 'Eagles' part to THE Eagles. I thought they were referring to the actual bird  )...but I have to say that based on this one song, I think I prefer QotSA and TCV to this band.

But now that I know the connection and am not as off-put by the name, I will listen to more of their stuff. Because I like his other 2 projects (or, at least the two I knew about before now!)

This is very disappointing to hear. But maybe that's why I never heard of these guys - I was out of the country for part of the 90's...maybe it came out while I was in Russia, and since they had no other hits, escaped me entirely.

Who knows?

In any case, it's a good song. Too bad it won't lead to my purchasing 5 more albums of good songs.

I wouldn't put too much stock in that. The kids came out on stage here in Baltimore last Summer too. That's just their thing, I think.

I think she was the last one.

1. Air "La Femme d'Argent"

Never heard before. Yeah this is chill...interesting...not something I would listen to all the time. 7/10.

2. The Shins "Pink Bullets"

Never heard before...I think I did a Shins song before. Not bad...the video was interesting with those paper animals. 8/10.

3. Beck "The Vagabond"

Not a fan of Beck...but I listen when I here a song on the radio...this wasn't too bad. 8/10.
