Different House Themes

I only got into House through DVD sets and reruns. From what I understand, Tear Drop by Massive Attack has been the theme of the show since the second episode on all first run US episodes. I'm confused as to why some reruns on USA network use the original theme music, but other episodes have the different theme songs. Did Massive Attack not give permission to use the theme song in specific syndication packages or something?

It's a rights issue.

According to Wikipedia at one time:

"Due to rights and licensing issues this music is not used for the show in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland (German version), Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Hungary, Latin America, Greece, Hong Kong, and Turkey. In those countries, a piece of music named 'House,' composed by Scott Donaldson and Richard Nolan, is used, which was written specifically for the show. With the second season, this was replaced with a similar, but modified, track. The parodic British television show Dead Ringers, which sometimes spoofs House, uses "Teardrop" for the spoof's opening theme. 'Teardrop' is also used in the Season 2 Region 2 release, replacing the 'House' theme at the beginning of the episode."

I'm in the US though. I was wondering why these differing themes are used for certain episodes on reruns here.

Ugh. That second one is terrible. The first one, "Teardrop" is the only one I've ever heard used for the show.

The 2nd two versions can be heard over the closing credits in North America, in their respective seasons.

I liked the one we got in Australia (called Singaporian in that video for some reason). The "European" version is similar and also very good, if not better. I don't like the bland sounding pop harpsichord one that America got.

I'm in Australia and I'm sure I have heard all 3 at one point or another - now wanting to go home and put the DVDs on to see which theme it is

I know at least one of the DVD sets has the US theme (not season 1, but maybe season 2 or 3?), and we currently get the US theme on television now. I think we mostly get the Singaporian version, but I swear we've had the European one for a little while too. I have every DVD set, but I can't be bothered checking which.

Certain newer seasons use "Teardrop" here in Canada when it's re-run on Showcase but all the earlier stuff uses the knockoff theme. I always assumed it was a rights thing.

I want to know why FOX recently scrapped the intro for a 5 second one then put back the old one then scrapped it again ?

make your mind up please

Still talking about syndication or the first run episodes? If they do a short one in first-run then it's usually because it's a Very Special Episode(TM) and they're cutting it for time.

What part of Canada are you in? I've only ever heard "Teardrop" from day one.

They do that if they need a little more running time for the episode.

Used to live in Ontario and now I'm in Alberta. Same in both places. It's only the re-runs on Showcase I'm talking about. The first-runs are always "Teardrop".
