Irrational prejudices you hold

Not open for further replies.
My irrational prejudice is that I tend not to take people who speak in certain regional accents seriously and assume they're dumb. I really have to remind myself that it's not true sometimes.
Especially given that everyone speaks in an accent.

Just that mine sounds dumber than most. :(

Bad upbringing for watching a cartoon? I sincerely hope that was a joke, so I'm just going to ignore that one.
The best and brightest people I know watched few if any cartoons growing up. I believe in restricting kids' TV consumption to the best/most humane/most educational programming, with a heavy bias against violence/war-centric shows. High standards of excellence, what can I say. ;)

I just happen to love the corny charm of the 80s... I can understand if you don't share that view, but don't judge someone for enjoying a harmless formulaic kids cartoon.

On a side note, it doesn't take a fan of the original cartoon to find fault in the new movies. They did focus too much on the human factor. Much like you, I quite enjoyed the first movie despite its problems
I love the goofy '80s charm, but formulaic cartoons run an unacceptably high risk of helping produce formulaic kids. It does seem to take a fan of the cartoon to scream and moan about the quality of the Bayformers flicks rather then just shrugging them off. And I enjoyed the first one largely because it put the robots in background/supporting roles. I can get invested in the tale of a geeky teen trying to score a gal; I don't give two shits about big-ass robots who seem to have no inner lives or personalities whatsoever. :)

Some high standard of excellence you have if you can watch Bayformers and shrug off that many blatant faults  :p Does not compute. Bayformers is not high brow cinema, and it doesn't take a genius or nitpicker to spot the faults. I enjoyed it, but it isn't any more intelligent than the original cartoons. It just looks fancier doing it. Teacake was spot on here.
Someone's intelligence is not at all dictated by what they watched as a kid. I watched quite a few cartoons as a kid, and I can promise you that my vast intelligence remains intact
But yeah, this is the irrational prejudices thread, so I can't really blame you for having a blatantly irrational prejudice. :p

All my prejudices are rational, and backed by a 90 day limited lifetime warranty.

Believing that exposure to cartoons causes someone to be other than the "best and brightest"? I'm sure there's a name for that, but I wouldn't call it high standards of excellence.

Yeah, this attitude is just a bit extreme. :vulcan: There's nothing wrong with kids watching cartoons as well as reading, creative play, interacting and communicating with adults and other children, and so on. Children need the occasional bit mental junk food as much as adults do. Besides, it's better to sit down with a child to watch Scooby-Doo and discuss what's happening and who the child thinks the bad guy is and why than to plonk a child by him/herself in front of a supposedly educational show alone. Educational shows have their value, of course, but only misinformed people think that cartoons have no value in children's lives when they have the potential for language and communication development through discussion, not to mention social and behavioural development through play with peers. Communication and play are the most important elements of strong, healthy early years intellectual development, not the retention of facts or the prattling off of numbers and letters.

BULLSHIT- I knew a kid growing up who was incredibly intelligent, I mean scary smart. He would read legal papers and dictionaries when he was in elementary school

He still watched muppet movies when he was a teenager.

I love the Muppets. :bolian:

And I have a rational prejudice against anyone who doesn't.

I still think The Great Santa Claus Switch is best. I wish they would bring that to DVD.

I have an extreme dislike of furries. I haven't met one who didn't piss me off in some way of another.

Also, I'm prejudiced against pseudo intellectuals who think that 80's franchises like Transformers and G.I. Joe are inherently dumb concepts (CUZ THEY HAVE NASTY WASTY VIOLENCE AND DA PEOPLEZ ARE TEH MEANIES!) that couldn't possibly be good . . . but then turn around and imply that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (a show that is arguably just as violent, if not more so in ways [BUT DAT DOESN'T COUNT CUZ DAY ONLY FITE ROBOTS, right?] and also has roots in a very dark comic) is somehow just fine.

Oh, I hate Twilight fans too. Yes, I hate the books, but the "people" who comprise that fanbase are fucking attrocious. I fully admit that I look down on people who read and unironically enjoy Twilight. Haven't met one person like that who wasn't completely obnoxious and idiotic.

While I absolutely hate that I feel this way, my job at TGI Fridays caused me to really dislike black people in a restaurant setting. I don't have a problem with any kind of people, but if black people come in to my restaurant, I get really annoyed. 95% of the time they come in, refuse to make eye contact with me, mumble quietly into their menus when they're ordering food so I can't make out a word they're saying, complain when their already-burnt steak "isn't well done enough," and then leave without tipping (or hell, sometimes they leave without even paying their entire bill!).

I'm sure it's a regional thing, as most of the black people in this area live in the poorer parts of town, but it's still damn annoying. Way to perpetuate stereotypes, folks. It's so bad that our black servers don't even want to wait on their fellow black patrons!

Oh, I also hate girls with pompadours.

This happens everywhere. I worked at a BBQ restaurant and black girls would come in all the time, eat 10 wings, and then say they weren't good and demand their money back. The black girl servers would roll their eyes and pretty much beg not to get the table when other black people came in.

Speaking of that... I had black coworkers who would constantly say "is it because I'm black?" when someone disagreed with them.

I've just discovered a new one... Son's new friend is 'Northern' and speaks with a northern accent AND he calls me 'love'!

He will not last long... :klingon:

To explain ~ there is a big North/South divide within the UK and I am in the South :mallory:

These stupid "tau" people arguing that "pi is wrong". Just because they can't wrap their heads around it. Math wasn't intended for the pedestrian masses.

To me, Christianity is a religion of love. Despite my many many sins and flaws Christ loves me. He loves me with a love so pure and eternal that it is humbling and the word "love" seems inadequate to describe it. It is beyond me why the whole world isn't clamoring to take part of this love and salvation. It strikes me as the heights of arrogance or stupidity that people might reject it.
Stupidity? Hey, dude, you're the one wanting to cuddle up to some illiterate hobo who's been dead for two thousand years. ;)

I would just handle this via PM with the person who notified on this post again after I already addressed it, but since people are apparently already discussing it with others according to that person, I'll discuss it here.

You can't complain about the response to a post being trolling while completely ignoring the comment that provoked it that was quoted in the same post just because it only insults non-Christians. If you consider insulting Jesus trolling than you must consider implying that anyone who isn't Christian is stupid and arrogant to be equally trolling. Or, you can give this thread a little more leeway than normal given the unique subject matter of "irrational prejudices," realize that one provocative post made in response to another is kind of a wash, and let it go.

That being said, if people would please make a greater effort not to be rude in your responses, that would be greatly appreciated; as would not receiving any more notifications on the post I've addressed twice now and that the whole topic has moved on from.

If anyone has any questions or comments, PM me to discuss it instead of saying something here.

Metal Man expressed his opinion in an intelligent and non confrontational manner (even though I disagree with him and fully understand others feeling the same way). Gaith, on the other hand, decided to make a childish potshot with little to no thought behind it instead of engaging in a genuine discussion. Metal Man didn't call anyone dumb technically. Gaith made a personal attack. There is an objective difference here that you can't deny.
