Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

I'd love to see the Isolationist Earth from A Less Perfect Union and Andorian-dominated Coalition explored more. Even the alliance formed in Places of Exile.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

Perhaps we could see various sequels to A Gutted World:

A Cleaned World
A Breaded World
A Fried World
A World Served With Chips And Tartar Sauce

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

The Tears of Eridanus was probably my favorite story in the collection, as it was quite fun. The concept of an Androiocentric Federation (er, Interstellar Union) was great, and makes perfect sense without the existence of the "normal" Vulcan. Sulu is a good character to read about, and Demora meeting Soval was a nice touch. It was also fun to picture the Celia Lovsky version of T'Pau as a violent matriarch. It would be interesting to revisit this timeline and find out if the Vulcans have moved towards a philosophy of peace or if, as one poster put it upthread, they've essentially become Psi-Romulans.
Thanks! T'Pau was a lot of fun to write-- such a jerk, but a regal one. I too would be interested in knowing what happens to the Minsharans. With a Klingon invasion coming, they might be in trouble...

I certainly interpreted the end of ToE as the Minsharans becoming, as you put it, psi-Romulans. Given S'Task's role in the Prime timeline it seems like the most likely outcome to me. That brings up my biggest complaint with the MyrU so far, most of the stories have set up some really interesting alternate universes and then left off at a major moment in it's history that will probably never be followed up on.

I agree with you for the most part. Brave New World and Places of Exile are the only two stories which really had an "ending". An epilogue would have been great for Tears of Eridanus and A Gutted World. On the other hand, an epilogue would have gutted the ending of Honor in the Night.

Well, the thing about the concept is that it really lends itself to BIG stories... but then they're contained in little novellas, which naturally focuses them a bit. I think we cut a full third from the first draft of The Tears of Eridanus. An epilogue never even occurred to us, to be honest; I think it would have been a little too conclusive for the story we were telling. The ending is a little too pat as it is!

As for a sequel, though... I have no objections!

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

I'm really behind on my Trek Lit books (for once), so I just got to reading this. I'm about halfway through 'Tears'.

I have to say that I was quite disappointed in the abrupt ending of 'Architects'. Just as it seemed like it was beginning to gain some momentum, suddenly it's over? Personally I felt like the Riker subplot could have been left out in favor of just making it a Data book. If more had been done with Riker's story I would agree with leaving it in, but it has basically no ending. At least there was a decent conclusion with the Data/Lal arc (even if it was abrupt).

I thought it was interesting to explore the idea of what would have happened had Wolf 359 never taken place, but it seemed to me like a short story was not large enough for something that complex. Well that, and it wasn't even the primary focus of the writing.

I've been wanting to get this book for a long time .I ordered it from Amazon.com but their warehouse got heavily damaged from the tornadoes last month.

I added a poll, so please vote.
As for me, I voted Above Average. I really liked all of the stories, but none of them were as mind blowingly awesome as some of the stories in the first two collections.
