Pacorietty didn't have the possession of the puck, hence Chara had no justification for checking him. I don't think he intended to drive Pacorietty into the stanchion, but he enacted a check in a dangerous place with real possibility of getting hurt. Instead of letting Pacorietty go (since he didn't have the puck) Chara still chose to nail him. He has responsibility for his actions.
Except in the NHL where this sort of thing happens often enough with no consequences.![]()
Pacioretty had just cleared the puck, a few seconds before the hit. Chara was trying to slow him up, and just went a little bit further than he should have. Any other night, and that's a two-minute minor, end of story. I think he should have got a one or two-game suspension, but I can certainly see where the league is coming from here.
It's a shame that the punishment is what people are talking about, when the stanchion, which caused the injury, is barely being discussed at all.
