Why is the SyFy channel getting a cooking show?

You know if syfy actually wanted to adhere to its science fiction roots. I would stop airing those ridiculous movies and I don't know maybe show the hundreds of science fiction movies made by mainstream. Movies like Contact, Species, supernova, fly,. The list goes on for hours. If they just saved up the money, and every once in a while made a good huge movie, I think the quality would be better and the sci-fi fans would show their appreciation. They have money issues becuase they suck at dealing with it. If they showed re-runs they would still make a decent profit, I have never seen the animated series of Star trek, I would love to. The could throw down the idea to have an animated verison of Stargate. There is hundred of possibilites. Men have a channel to them, Woman have a channel for them, We nerds need a channel for us. Syfy used to be that. Were lucky if Syfy decides to air stargate ot star trek, Like last night it said SG-1 followed by Atlanis, instead it was that stupid japanese anima.

People forget that "sci-fi" is just an informal nickname for the genre called science fiction, and a very loosely applied nickname that often encompasses fantasy, horror, and other borderline categories.
I haven't forgotten. I'm interested in all of those - horror is pretty scarce on TV for instance and I'd check out a new horror series or two - as long as they're good. Not just another cop show in sf/f disguise. Not stupid, not obviously derivative of other shows we've seen a million times, hopefully with a premise and characters that make you care enough to keep watching. Where are those shows? It's still a long time till The Walking Dead comes back.

SyFy pronounced 'Siffy' has been a major disappointment to me..but then again almost all TV programming has become shit since un-reality TV hit it big in the early 2000s...

So I watch DVDs and Blu-rays of the series/movies I want to see..or get em over the internet...

Syfy can die and I won't miss it...

So they can run a cooking show, a ghost hunters show, poorly produced crapfest movies that make the 1960s Godzilla films look like Academy award winners, a make-up show..WWE, a mud wrestling show..or anyone of a dozen different shit shows...

they have been dead to me since they cancelled MST3K...

getting one. SyFy is about sci-fi... not cooking... I miss the good ole' days of when television made sense...

I thought it was about ghost hunting.

Well, if Top Chef is any indication, viewers hate Marcel so his show will probably tank. I always thought he was kind of funny but he seems to instill hostility in others.

Right. Like the rest of the time the minority gets screwed. But even syfy can take a change for the better. Some Ideas I listed above, wrong or right, I don't know but it could be a start.

Why is the SyFy channel getting a cooking show?

Because there were too many complaints about them showing wrestling. So they got a cooking show, and now we're complaining about that? Jeez, what do y'all want them to air, space shows?

;)

On the other hands, let's not romanticize the old days too much. I remember when the Sci Fi Channel was mostly just a graveyard for old, cancelled tv shows. Unless you wanted to watch ancient Bionic Woman or Incredible Hulk reruns, there was no real reason to tune in.

Now we have Warehouse 13, Eureka, Faceoff, Haven, the next BSG miniseries, and Sharktopus. I'll take that over endless reruns of dead shows . . . .

(Plus, let's keep things in perspective. TNG, Enterprise, and Twilight Zone take up way more of their weekly schedule than a few hours of wrestling every week.)

Yeah but I bet you anything those go away in the next few years. Then what?
Sharktopus wasn't that good. And I wouldn't say buck rogers, but Jericho, Jereamiah(?), star trek, stargate, and sci-fi movies(not made by SyFy). I would choose those anyday over what they are showing now. Even supernatural has a sci-fi part to it. I mean if we air Ghost hunters, why not actaully add entertainment to battle it.
I don't consider Face Off to be Sci-fiction, its a drama fashion like show, we don't need America's Next Top Model on SyFy.

You clearly didn't see the "zombie" or "alien" episodes! :)

Seriously, it's not "fashion." It's special effects monster makeup, which has been a staple of science fiction, fantasy, and horror for generations.

Seems perfect for the Syfy Channel.

I guess I'll never understand the television business. Why give up your distinct nitch, where you're gauaranteed a loyal following to switch to a format where you're now directly competing with a dozen other channels showing the same cookie cutter reruns and reality shows?

Cept for the fact that I see drama like fashion shows in it , create all the aliens and monsters you want, just don't do that fashion reality drama bull. And thats exactly what the producers did. Yeah if they took away the eliminations and the drama, and all that. Great for sci-fi. But since I don't see any new sci-fi, fantasy shows coming out, what exactly is this for? Has to be horror. but since its mostly mainstream cinema that needs them the most, it wont show on Syfy for the next 4 year after its release.

Don't knock the reruns. The heyday of cable TV programming that was dominated by reruns of old shows was a great time for me, because it let me discover series from before my time or shows I'd missed the first time around. I only know The Wild, Wild West from its reruns on TNT. And the SciFi Channel was, for a time, a great showcase for the abundant short-lived SF shows that didn't last long enough to get syndicated normally. (For over 13 years I've cherished my fading, not-quite-complete collection of RoboCop: The Series episodes taped from SciFi. Luckily, I recently found there's a Canadian DVD set available and it's on its way to me now.)

If anything, it's a shame that most of the cable reruns you find these days are for recent or current shows like CSI, Law & Order, House, and the like. Although I did recently get an opportunity to sample T. J. Hooker on the Sleuth channel. Sure, these days there are DVDs and Hulu, but still, there are some old shows that are hard to find.

But yes, for the first five or six years of SciFi's existence, it didn't have much of anything in the way of original fiction programming.

A loyal following is nice, but not if it's a small following, as niche fandoms tend to be. Wrestling has a loyal following that's much, much huger than the loyal following for Farscape or Stargate or Battlestar Galactica -- heck, huger than all those followings put together. (I've seen this firsthand. When I or my fellow Star Trek novelists have done book signings at the Simon & Schuster booth at the New York Comic-Con, we got maybe a few dozen fans seeking autographs in the course of an hour. When some wrestling star did a signing of one of their ghostwritten books, the booth was utterly swamped, with the autograph line stretching halfway down the aisle.) And reality shows, sad to say, are hugely popular too. It's always been the way that the more lowbrow something is, the more successful it is. There are a lot of people out there who don't want to use their brains when they watch TV.

Television is a business. Programmers have to maximize ratings and minimize costs. Reality programming is cheap to make and, sadly, very popular. A cheap show that brings in a large audience is preferable to an expensive show that brings in a small, loyal niche audience. It's simple economics.

But then you'd just have a weekly symposium on makeup techniques. Like it or not, good tv involves colorful personalities, suspense, and conflict. "Who will eliminated the week?"

Then again, I still still miss WHO WANTS TO BE A SUPERHERO . . . .

Because that "loyal following" has a ceiling beyond which the station cannot grow - and if a business isn't growing in revenue from year to year, it's in deep shit.

The choice isn't between "broaden your appeal and grow" and "service your niche and remain stable." It's between growth and collapse whether quick or slow.

Now you understand a little of the television business. Or did you think that all of the people running SyFy really were being somehow irrational en masse?

I'd love it if they'd stop messing with my anime... 1 AM for Chrono Crusade last night! All because of whatever the hell "The Event" was!

They aired your Anime on Tuesday night. I didn't pay attention to what one, becuase I was pissed off that it said stargate was on and they aired that instead.
