March FanArt Challenge - Kirk. James Kirk.

CHALLENGE IS SET - SEE POST BELOW BY Ptrope ON 3/9/2011

Okay, so here it is:

"Spy Trek," the dark, gritty, suave side of space, the final frontier. James Bond meets James Kirk. Any era is fair game, but be original - don't just rearrange "Our Man Bashir" screen caps ;). It can be characters (including existing ones, of course) who are Federation super spies, or alien villains (heck, even Federation villains!) in the style of Goldfinger or Blofeld (not just everyday villains like a Klingon with an eyepatch ;)); it can be gadgets or secret lairs; it can be classic James Bond films reimagined with Trek characters ("Flame Gems Are Forever?" :D)

Get working, Mr. Bond - you have a license to draw!

Okay, I'm going to invite some discussion on this one before locking it down, but I'll go ahead and lay some groundwork.

Starfleet has generally been presented as an above-board, altruistic organization, its members heroes in every sense of the word, policing the galaxy and protecting the weak. Then DS9 came around and we saw a darker side of the Federation, a self-interest that culminated in Section 31, the 'black ops' behind the shining white fleet. It became clear that they had been around pretty much throughout the Federation's history, even in Kirk's time - of course, Gene Roddenberry would have no doubt thrown such an idea out the window ... but keep in mind that the '60s not only brought James Kirk to popular culture, they brought us James Bond, as well.

So one idea here is that, yes, maybe Section 31 or something similar existed. Could our suave, charming captain have filled a tailored suit - or its 23rd century equivalent - and embarked on derring-do like a certain British agent, with all the gadgets, babes and villains, in the secret service of the Federation?

Another approach is to reimagine the Bond stories themselves in the context of Star Trek - green Orion women, evil Romulan despots, a Klingon "Goldfinger." Maybe "Q" is "Q!"

It could be a scene, a gadget, a movie poster, a title screen, a character - something that gives that "superspy vibe" to Star Trek - for the next couple days, please feel free to ask questions and make suggestions, and on Monday, I'll pull the trigger on the Madness of March :bolian:.

I like this! So much potential for awesome.

Re: March FanArt Challenge Discussion - Kirk. James Kirk.

Can I just post a screencap from "Our Man Bashir"?

Nice idea. Are we limited to Kirk and TOS or can we use characters from any Trek series? The latter would open the contest up a little more. :)

Sounds great, and I'm sure he meant any Trek incarnation... :D

Makes me think of my entry for the old "challenge coin" contest!

Sure, any series (even TAS ;) ).

Sorry, no screencaps from "Our Man Bashir" :D

Re: March FanArt Challenge Discussion - Kirk. James Kirk.

William Shatner is Kirk - James Kirk, in "Greenfinger."

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion we're going to be seeing some Orion "Bond girls"? :D

Okay to "Spy Trek", but is "007 meets Star Trek" just an example, or what? To put it another way; is the goal specifically a Bond/Trek mashup, or would a trekish take on any super spy suffice? What about Matt Helm at the Helm? Or perhaps one of the personas of the immortal Flint was "Our Man Flint"? And I'm picturing a variation on the Starfleet arrowhead that takes the place of the usual the triangular U.N.C.L.E. identification badge.

"And remember, if you or any member of your section 31 team is caught or killed, the Federation Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. ...This tribble will self destruct in five seconds..."

So is it just the world of 007, or can any spy or top secret law enforcement agency play along?

Oh, sure, that would work! Even "The Avengers" (Steed and Mrs. Peel, not Thor and Iron Man ;) ), or mayhap The Prisoner - that whole '60s super-spy genre is pretty much fodder, I'd say.

Sure, that's the idea. But it should probably be Kirk as a spy, not William Shatner - it's still Star Trek, after all ;)
