Dominion War series

I have yet to read these books, but I recently purchased parts three and four. Is it necessary to read the first two books before I begin these? Also, what are your opinions on this four-part series?

#2 and #4 are novelizations of the "Occupation arc" of DS9's sixth season. A few scenes from "Call to Arms" are included in #2.

#1 and #3 are original TNG novels and are basically two parts of the same story.

That's cool, but kind of disappointing at the same time. I was hoping to get some new adventures of the Defiant crew during the war.

Well, for what it's worth, the novelization in books 2 & 4 expands on the events of the DS9 episodes and adds a new overarching storyline that happens "behind the scenes" of the episodes, unifying them more than they were onscreen (though it requires reinterpreting one or two things in the episodes).

The DS9 arc is expanded quite a bit, like one of Defiant's missions while Sisko is at Starbase 375 is depicted IIRC. These were my very first Trek books back in the day and despite their flaws I still remember them fondly. And as toughlittleship stated they are indeed two-parters.

Great! Thanks for the input everyone. I've been trying to find the first two at local used book stores, but I think I might just buy them online. I look forward to reading them.

It should be noted that books #1 and #3 (the TNG stories) are not considered to be part of the 'DS9 relaunch' continuity, and, in one specific aspect, the two continuities contradict each other. I enjoyed them when I read them, but there's not a lot of 'Enterprise action', it's mainly a 'Picard and Ro' story set against the backdrop of the war.

Love the idea of an artificial wormhole generator, though- that would have been a great premise for an episode of the show.

As I recall, there are two ways in which the John Vornholt Dominion War duology has been contradicted by the modern novel continuity. One is the Picard/Ro material, and the other is the (apparent?) death of
Lt. Taurik,
who is alive and well in the current TNG novels. True, that character's death is never confirmed, so he could've escaped in some unlikely and convoluted way, but it would be a stretch.

I lieked the novels detailing events of the Dominion war my favorite novels were the 2 ds9 novels that were expanded and the added storylines filled in the missing scenes we didn't get to see on tv. I liked Sisko's expanded storyline and the events with kira nd Odo on Ds9 under dominion occupation.

I thought they didn't know what actually had happened to him

^Like I said, the death wasn't confirmed. But it was stated at one point that he had probably died, and I don't think it was ever refuted in the rest of the book.
