Re: so i have to ask but what was the enterprise doing this whole time

i wouldn't of minded a 2 part crossover featuring the Enterprise crew.

it could of brought in a lot of tng fans who didnt make the switch

With the TNG crew having moved on to feature films at that point, I think Paramount didn't want to potentially dilute the box office draw of the TNG movies by having the crew or the ship appear on TV.

I recall reading at the time that that was the thinking behind the destruction of the Ent-D at the end of Generations - they wanted a new ship that would only be seen on the big screen.

Actually I think it would have worked out better in reverse - if the Dominion War was the setting of a TNG movie. I can just imagine how fantastic a TNG Dominion War flick, with appearances from the DS9 crew, could have been versus, say, "Insurrection," which had the Enterprise crew prancing around a Disneyworld-looking planet making boob and zit jokes and making preachy lectures instead of, you know, fighting in the interstellar war.

I think I've said something like this before, but it's worth repeating. They should have done the ninth Star Trek movie like the first X-Files movie.

Have it take place between two seasons of the show (during the Dominion arc). Connect it to what happens in the episodes while simultaneously making it self-contained enough that you don't have to be a DS9 watcher to enjoy it. Bada boom, bada bing!

I still think the ninth ST movie could have (and should have) been about the liberation of Betazed from the Dominion. It'd be easy to set up what's going on, you have something that ties into DS9, and you also have something that has a personal stake for a main character. Plus, you'd have Picard and Weyoun bantering, the lack of which I think is one of the bigger lost opportunities in Star Trek.

Re: so i have to ask but what was the enterprise doing this whole time

Picard and co. were most likely putting out brush fires and engaging in diplomacy. I don't see why that's so far-fetched. The Enterprise-E was the first (to our knowledge) Sovereign-class vessel, but perhaps not the only one in Starfleet. At any one time there may be hundreds or even thousands of Starfleet vessels. It's similar to the Galaxy-class in a way. We know for a fact that the Enterprise is not the only Galaxy-class ship ever made (Yamato, Odyssey, Vencher, etc.)

Another Sovereign-class ship may have been patrolling the Romulan border, on joint battle duty with the Klingons, patrolling the Cardassian border, in the Federation core worlds home fleet (there most likely may have been a permanent fleet protecting Earth, Andor, Vulcan and Tellar as they are only about 20 or so light years apart), etc.

The fact is the Federation, and by extension Alpha Quadrant, is large. Whilst Sisko and co. were retaking DS9, Picard and co. could have been hundreds of light years away, on the other side of the Federation, mediating a trade dispute or patrolling the Romulan Neutral Zone.

Re: so i have to ask but what was the enterprise doing this whole time

The Enterprise could well have been at every giant fleet battle. It was just on the other side of the "cameraman", who was focused on the Defiant.

The size of the fleet works both ways. Any ship is more likely to be there, but any ship there is less likely to make it on screen.
