Found a cat wandering the halls

^ I've always wanted to get a cat, actually. I think they're great, but my dad is allergic to them, so we could never have one while I was growing up. :(

Aw. I've been thinking about it myself. After my sweet black lab Dallie passed in November, I didn't think I wanted another pet. Finally, I thought about looking into adopting a shelter dog, but for some reason I've been thinking about getting a kitty cat instead. I'm not sure why, but I look at them, and I just melt (I do this with dogs, too  ).

^ I know how you feel... how else could I be compelled into letting this random cat into my home?

Honestly, cats are super cheap.

I spend about $6 a month on my cat.

That little, really?

I get a giant bag of hard food (about $10) that lasts 2-3 months, and I buy a big container of litter (about $15) that lasts about one month.

My cat is happy with that arrangement.

I've had her for 3 years and never even taken her to the vet (maybe I should?). She got all her shots and was spayed before I got her when she was 6 months old.

I wish I could feed my cats that cheaply. Miss Chicken won't eat hard food at all though she did eat when she was younger. She likes kangaroo mince and occasionally tuna and goes through about $5-8 worth of food a week. Spider likes tuna, kangaroo mince and some hard food, Georgy will eat almost anything.

He certainly does look like he's decided that is home. I'm sure feeding him salmon for his first meal clinched the deal.

BTW, eating like he hasn't eaten in days doesn't necessary mean that he really hasn't eaten in days. My husband and I had cats for years, and the routine was that whoever got home first after work would feed them dinner. They managed to fool us into two dinners a few times -- raised such a ruckus that we just knew the other person hadn't fed them yet -- before we learned to ask.

What a beautiful kitty, and he looks so comfy in that chair! Well done for taking care of him, even if it was only for a day.

Yes, it's the vet bills that could catch you out in the end, and, really, even indoor cats should be vaccinated annually. One of my cats was prone to bladder infections when she was first adopted and I spent several hundred dollars on her treatments. I now have pet insurance for her and our dog but the deductable is £200, so we'd still need to pay quite a bit up front if either of them needed expensive treatment. Heck, it cost £172 for my daughter's rat to be spayed and have a benign tumour removed. Vets are definitely not cheap.

Looks like a beautiful young cat. A huge contrast to my fiancee's 18 year old cat. Still looks good for 18 tho

Yeah, my parent's dog is a border terrier, and he's definitely managed that feat a couple of times.

What a nice kitty! My cats came to me the same way, except there was no owner to claim them. I had two great cats for almost 16 years, and I hope I find the right new cat for me.

That's what you think. Your husband just doesn't want you knowing that he's shirking his chores.

I was going to comment that the cat appeared relatively nourished (although perhaps a tad underweight) and quite well-groomed so he was very likely a neighbor's pet. I'm glad to see he's been claimed; I'm sure his owners are quite happy.

Handsome little guy.

Aha, a neighbor just came by to claim him. I can't lie, I'm slightly disappointed... seemed like a nice cat!

At the very least, it made our evening a little more interesting. :)

I was going to suggest this possibility too. Every time I leave the house, I'm worried that one of my cats is going to bolt out the door and I'm not going to see it (they're stealthy little guys). Fortunately they'd still need to get through two other doors to get outside so the odds of that happening are quite slim. Good on you for taking care of the kitty--I'm surprised you were able to get him to leave after giving him salmon. :)

Yeah, we figured the same. A stray out in Ottawa's winter would be a lot more bedraggled and probably quite skinny, so we thought the chances of his owner being nearby were probably pretty high.

The cat just wanted to freeload a meal.

Sucker. :p :D

Oh, no, it went both ways.

^ Intelligent little buggers, aren't they? ;)

Oh, totally. If I ever wanted a pet, it would be a cat. Self-sufficient savvy creatures with good attitudes most of the time. Clean, too, which definitely helps.

I don't think your wardrobe would withstand the inevitable cat hair all over EVERYTHING. :D

Short-hairs don't shed so bad. Though maybe I should get a sphinx cat...

(actually, the hair-on-clothes issue is indeed one amongst several reasons why I don't have a pet)
