iPad 2 - what's the latest buzz - heard anything?

Yeah, I don't really have a need to have all of my music on my tablet. I already have access to it on my phone.

The only application where i can foresee having a massive amount of storage space on the unit is for people who have very, very large Power Point and/or excel files they use to demonstrate in a Presentation setting. But even with that now if you have wi-fi access and Windows 7 you could conceivably demonstrate the presentation via remote with the iPad and/or update an excel spreadsheet.

Honestly i still can't understand why people are so adamant about Apple products.

Sure.. they are very well thought out and their initial releases of a new line will be quite ahead of the competition which usually takes them multiple releases to come within the range of the Apple product.

However what i really despise about Apple is their near fanatical drive to make you use their product how they want and envisioned.. they imagined total wireless function with the Ipad and so didn't include any connectors to other hardware, not even a micro USB port?
How about those people who are not totally "wirelessed" and might want to plug in an USB stick as an external storage device?

What's even more appaling is that within a year (sometimes even within 6-9 months) they will release the follow up with new improvements that should have been with the initial product.. really, how hard is it to include a camera when you know that videoconferencing might be a real bonus for many people using it?
Because they know that people will buy the new products because of these improvements and not think twice about being ripped off.

Apple has mastered PR and sales.. no company is that devious yet has such a squeaky clean image and a fanatical fanbase.

Personally i'd wait a while for other companies to catch up a bit and then do an indepth comparison.. my needs and expectations vs the products in the market. If the choice falls on an Apple product fine.. they do great products but other companies do too and usually with more "standard" bells and whistles and for less money often enough.

What about those people who have a large iTunes library? And good luck with those multi-GB-sized pptx and xlsx files.

;)

Since the primary use of a pad for me would be just 10 hrs of total use during any given day there is only so much music or video programming I could watch so the smaller storage space works fine for me.

On a related note it's disappointing that Xoom is coming out this week and only will be released in the Verizon 4G connect only and not the cheaper wifi version as reported here

This.

This is the main reason why I am a die-hard PC guy now, when it comes to computing needs... I realized that for a very long time, Apple has had the habit of always "leaving something out" of a product that I really wanted and would liked to have had as an option. Because of that, I realized that if I bought an Apple, I'd be paying more for less, so I switched to PC, and now won't ever go back. The only Apple products I have any use for and own now are iPods, because I use them for music and nothing else.

Yes, Apple folks are very fanatical about their computers and other hardware and they often seem confused as to why someone would need MS applications. I tried to explain to the sales woman in the Apple store that while I could convert presentations to an apple format, most people in business exchange power point presentations in the 'non Apple,' world.

I am disappointed as I said up-thread that Motorola is releasing the Xoom product with the Verizon only connectivity - at least a first.

The longer term question is how Android will fair over time in terms of apps that will work in terms of functionality for people.

I don't care really lol. I think tablets cater for a non-existent market need. Netbooks are just as portable. And even high-end smartphones, like the iPhone, Google Nexus S, Samsung Galaxy S, etc. have similar functionality.

IPad 2 rumored to be out next week:

Huffington:
Hold on to your hats, because the iPad 2 may be swooping in fast.
Kara Swisher of All Things D reports that Apple will hold a special event on Wednesday, March 2 in San Francisco, where it's possible that the followup to last year's breakout product will be announced.
Though invitations have yet to be mailed, Swisher has confirmed the event with "several sources close to the situation."
Since the unveiling of the original iPad in early 2010, there has been no shortage of speculation about the tablet's successor, unofficially called "iPad 2."
According to some of the rumors, the next iPad could feature front-facing and rear-facing cameras, as well as a slightly slimmer and lighter build. Customers may even have to choose between two separate versions of the device--one built specifically for AT&T's network and one for Verizon's.
If Kara Swisher's intel is correct, we have only to wait nine more days to see which of the rumors prove true--if any.

The event teaser for next week clearly has the iPad interface behind it, so it's a certain that the iPad2 or whatever it will be called will be unveiled next Wednesday.

On the Xoom front, it's in stores today and most places seem to have their reviews up. The general consensus is that the hardware is good, the OS is a little rough around the edges but does some things better then the iPad (multitasking, notifications, etc) but the biggest problem currently is the lack of 3rd party tablet-specific apps. Apple obviously has the lead here on all their competitors, hopefully everyone else will be able to catch up in short order.

If an Android tablet came out with decent specs at a reasonable price ($200 or less, needs to be at least on par or below netbook prices as far as I'm concerned) I'd probably get one. Guess I'll be waiting a few years. :)

I have a feeling that iPhones, iPads and iPods of the future will sync with Thunderbolt instead of the 32pin connector it uses now.

Looks like Thunderbolt can do pretty much everything. It might become the only connector that Macs have!

As for iPhone/Touch/Pad syncing: Why can't they do it wirelessly? That's what I'd really like.

I have no doubt that iProducts will have wireless syncing but most people will still use tether o they can charge their device at thevsame time.

I have a feeling that Apple will keep using their proprietary connectors as long as they can.

There's no reason why Apple's devices need to sync wired though... Android devices don't actually sync to PC's at all, they only time I ever connect mine is to copy over new music files. Contacts, apps and even data backups are done transparently over the cloud, editing a contact on my phone has it instantly show up in Gmail on my PC and vice versa. Presumably the rumors about the revamp of MobileMe will address this for Apple devices.

I just discovered that the iPad actually supports multiple VPN protocols, which makes it a bit more attractive to me.

What I'm most bothered by currently is the weight, then speed occasionally ever this Apple's multi-tasking has been introduced.

Netbooks, and other "laptops", are still mostly used on a desk or table. Some people do put them on their laps, but this requires sitting up. It's a bit awkward to use a laptop while lying on a bed or walking around.

Smartphones are simpler to use in those ultra-casual situations, but the small screen suits them mostly for quick lookups and data retrieval. Most people don't surf the web on their phones for an extended period.

A tablet provides a good in-between. You can use it while doing anything around the house like an iPhone, but you aren't struggling to look at a tiny screen if you want to use it for an extended time. It fits in your arm much like a clipboard, so carrying it isn't an unfamiliar sensation. And while the virtual keyboard is a better option for casual use, if you happen to need to type a lot and have a suitable surface, a BlueTooth keyboard can be synced up easily.

New iPad: meh

New self-cleaning smart cover: Wow!

(i'm not joking. I'm actually really impressed by the latter)
