What keeps you here?

I like that I get what seem to be honest answers or advice when I post about issues that come up in my life. Some are brutally honest, but still good answers or answers.

Oh dear, I hope that wasn't a reference to me! If I've been too harsh I apologize.

Not at all, I was referring to a thread, actually threads that I posted months ago. And no, you haven't been too harsh and I do appreciate the answers you gave.

Funny you should ask, I don't really know. Habit probably. Every time I think of leaving, one or two new posters become active, who's opinions I enjoy reading. Unlike you, Rojo, I do think the intelligence level here is generally pretty decent, although there are a number of posters like those you mention.

I do sometimes think of promising favours to the admins or sending a check, if only they would permaban one or two names. There is no one really bad who truly deserves a ban, but some peeps are just so irritating, after years of repeating the same things, I know what some posters' hang-up responses will be before I've opened the topic. I admire the self control of the admins. Having said that, no one's ever annoyed me enough for me to place them on ignore.

I guess it's pretty enjoyable to have a place to go on the internet where you know people well, and they in turn know you, and you share similar interests, a place that allows you to get comfortable and put your feet up, so to speak. The place is like a pair of comfortable old boots for me.

I've already been here far longer than I've ever been on any other board, and it's the people that keep me. While I mostly keep myself to the lounges, I often read Misc and TNZ and occasionally post there.

It's reading all the interesting responses here that keep me going, and feeling like I know everyone here, and I'd say that on the whole, it's the most intelligent board I've been on.

And then, if I ever feel like delving into sci-fi, there's a whole board at my fingertips.

Iv only been here since last December and I bloody love it. It's the 1st online forum I have ever joined.

I have noticed a few posters who come across like effigy burning psychopaths when it comes to any mention of 'NuTrek'. You could have a thread labelled 'what's your favourite fruit' and some moron will inevitably end up twisting the thread in the direction of an Abrams bash. This is the only thing that has put me off so far.

Other than that I am pleased to have found a place where I can talk about quantum slipstream technology without being looked at like a nonce in a nursery.

I'm here mostly for the social aspect. Due to my husband's working hours and lack of babysitters I don't get out much, so I spend time reading some of the forums and participating mostly in stories and games. Sure, a handful of posters bug the hell out of me, but I simply scroll past their posts. I see it as harmless fun and, in the 10 months I've been here, I've gained several online friends, which is an added bonus.

Easy. Cardassians. With whom else should I talk about Cardassians, if not with people here?
You know the looks from outsiders, when you start talking about aliens, don´t you? ;)
And the Misc has now and than interessting posts or good advice-givers here.

I'm getting on to my 10 year anniversary and I still like posting here. We get some interesting topics and some of the new posters are fun. Also, what else would I do if I just wanted to take a 5 minute break from work and read a few threads? :D

I have been a member of this board for almost 11 years now, and I have to say my interest in waning.

I took a 6 month break last year because I had become bored with this place. I'm beginning to feel that way again.

Maybe this place is just getting too big.
I feel that the opposite is true. This forum feels a bit too small to me. I'd prefer it if there were perhaps 2-3 times the number of active posters.

Mostly, I like being able to talk about Star Trek with more than the 2-3 people in know IRL who can talk about Star Trek, and it's great to get different perspectives from people about it. I've got to say the Doctor Who forum's been a bit of a disappointment--things just seem to get pretty heated in there over stuff that no one should be that emotionally invested in. I didn't watch ENT or VOY the first time around, and being able to share my reactions to those shows with people here has been a lot of fun.

Every now and then I'll get bothered by some of the jerky posters, but out of all the annoyances I had to deal with on a daily basis, this is a pretty minor one. Overall, I'd guess that about 1/4 of the posters here are people that I'd probably enjoy having a conversation with IRL, 1/4 are people who I'd actively avoid, and 1/2 haven't made an impression on me either way. That's not so bad.

It's a good place to kill a few hours. I don't participate much these days, but I still read.

I also have fond memories of this place. Made a few friends here, gone to a few meetups, and it introduced me to several shows I may not have bothered with otherwise (Doctor Who, Farscape, Buffy, etc.)

It's tough finding another message board - even if I don't necessarily adore everyone here I at least know something about most people, so it's not like talking to a bunch of strangers. That, plus I like the setup here. Other places break down into way too many categories, or allow sigs in images, etc.

I guess maybe I'm realizing I don't need this place anymore. I started posting when I was 14. I didn't have much in the way of friends, and I pretty much spent all my free time on the family computer because I had nothing better to do. I've grown up considerably and have a very active social life now, so when I come here and just get frustrated by so many of the people here, I wonder why I still bother. I think it must just be habit. After coming here nearly every day for 11 years, it's hard to stop.

Yeoman Randi. She's the only one who laughs at my jokes, and ironically, is the only one who takes me seriously. Plus we have the same first name. We must be cousins or something.

That, and it keeps me from thinking too hard about my plans for world domination.

^ Weird. My ears were just burning! :rommie: I love you Randy. Seriously, you were one of the very first people here that made me think, "i need to stick around here". You always make me laugh.

To the OP: Every now and then, when say, i post something i just purchased that i am really excited about...and someone makes fun of me or it....(rather than just say, "congratulations") i think to myself, WTF?

But then i remind myself of the dozens of people i have come to love, respect and enjoy.... and i stick around.
Whats been even more awesome are the friends i've made here that are now friends with me over on facebook. We continue to learn about each other and our friendships grow. It's been pretty awesome.

I've only been here a year and a half but i can't imagine a day without the BBS.

:shifty:

For the record, when I said your new jacket was nerdy, I meant that with love.

I mean, yes, I was slightly making fun of you, but no more than I would make fun of myself for making an equally nerdy purchase. And I promise, I have done that. If you're gonna be a huge nerd, you need to be able to make fun of yourself for it a little bit.

My single minded determination to have YR teach me her glorious NY accent is one of the many things that keep me here. :techman:

Pure habit.

Occasionally there's still a fun/interesting thread. But mainly, I've posted here long enough that it would be weird not to read it any more.

I'd agree with Jadzia upthread in that I'd prefer it if it were busier (but with more posters, rather than the current posters posting more frequently). It used to be, but has slowed down over the past 3-5 years.
