I don't think Janeway ever developed any type of relationship with Kashyyk.
She was playing him the whole time
Janeway wasn't giving up her stuff to easy to Chakotay, she sure as hell wasn't falling for that guy. Janeway isn't stupid.
If she was, then the metaphor of counterpoint has lost it's meaning in the episode.
It's all about them playing AGAINST each other in unison.
If she was falling for him, she'd be playing in harmony with him.
That's not a counterpoint.

The Janeway/Kashyk dance is super amazing awesome and fun to watch, because you're never quite sure how emotionally invested either of 'em are. My only complaint is that I think Kashyk's voice is kinda silly. I always laugh when he yells "PRAAAAX!" and I don't think I'm supposed to

He played Sheldon's boss on the Big Bang Theory and everytime he was supposed to be angry I had to laugh. His voice is ridiculous.

^ I've got to say that there was one shot where he was standing up and, from a distance, he kind of looked like Kramer from Seinfeld. It was the jacket that did it.

Shatnertage I enjoyed your review! Such a wonderful episode. My kid particularly likes this one and watches it frequently. It's really a perfectly done ep and if I was listing top 20 Trek eps (hmmm...) it would be there.

Exodus I think Janeway was always in control and playing Kashyk too.. but I also think she got caught up in the play and the "what if's.." of having a romance, something she felt the absence of. Doesn't mean she got sucked in to HIM, just means play acting that part was a little close to the bone.

I still don't agree.
I think inorder to play a player like Kashyyk, she had go that far to make it look that way.
Janeway wouldn't put her personal feelings before those that needed her.
Those telepaths lives were at stake and so was the possable future of her crew.
It one of the aspects of Janeways character that seperated her from Kirk.
She wasn't seduced by a big butt and a smile nor was she going to allow herself to be seduced by someone that executed people without prejudice or was prejudice themselves. I think that would be a HUGE issue in the relationship.

In addition to my usual work, I've got an article to write and a camera crew is filming my class today as part of a C-SPAN series. I'm not camera shy or anything, but since I'm being recorded for posterity I feel like I have to put a special effort into not making an ass out of myself, which means even more prep than I usually do.

Although, if she found out in the end she was wrong and he was sincerely trying to reforem from his evil ways, I think she would have "considered" him as a potential suitor.

I'd have LOVED to see Chak's response to THAT, since he was never really threatened by Holographic Michael. (Well, there was that brief moment on the bridge in "Spirit Folk, but I digress)

Wow, that video was fantastic! Checking out some of Bloempje's other vids and of course there's a J/C one that is making me all fangirly and squee.

The first time I saw "Counterpoint" I thought Janeway did let herself get taken in by the game a little bit, because after all she is a woman who hasn't gotten to FEEL like a woman in a while. And despite Kashyk's ridiculous voice (I did giggle quite a bit at it during the ep), there was a sexy quality to him that made me want to forget what a terrible, reprehensible being he was. However I agree that she would have pulled herself back from truly feeling anything for him, and played the game quite expertly. The look on her face after he leaves the bridge when he finds out she played him says a lot to me.

And, speaking of images, I'm going to speak about...

"Latent Image"

We open with the Doc taking sub-atomic x-rays of everyone, just because.

Naomi Wildman is back, and she's officially my favorite child actor in Trek. I really respect any kid who can handle dialog about subatomic structure and make it sound completely natural.

Then we're onto the real episode: someone's operated on Harry Kim, and neither of them remember it.

Janeway blows him off, but Seven reluctantly agrees to help. Then the Doc forgets it all--someone has wiped his memory! Is there an intruder on board?

From the look that Janeway gives Tuvok, I suspect that's not the case.

Just a little note--did anyone else think it was silly that, after showing us their skeleton, innards, and muscles, the people scanned appear with their uniforms on? Obviously you're not going to have full-frontal nudity in Trek (even if it's not sexual in nature), but it just feels funny to see the uniform recreated on what is basically a medical model.

So the core of the episode is the Doctor's inability to cope with a difficult decision that he made. And all of the credit for this episode working so well goes to Robert Picardo, who absolutely acts his ass off (in a good way).


It's incredibly powerful stuff from Picardo, and he gets great support from both Mulgrew and Ryan, who share two great scenes.

Nice open ending, too.

This is another fantastic episode--I hope they keep coming.

There so much emotion conveyed in that scene without one word being spoken.
It was a great way to set up that shot.

Latent Image is definitely a favorite. I need to watch it again though so before I mix it up with any other episodes I'm going to look for my fifth season disks and run through it.
And your next one. I'll have to make that a priority to rewatch.
