I HATE spicy foods, Danggit!

Awww. You're so white.

I'm Canadian with Scots\Welsh heritage (about as white as you can get short of being albino) and I love spicy foods. :p

And personally, I find that spice is a great way of adding dimension and flavour to a meal. There are some things that just aren't worth eating without a little bit of a kick to 'em, IMO.

I dunno. How spicy are we talking? If it's so spicy that all I can taste is burning, then no.

This. I like a good chili or scrambled eggs & chorizo (the only good thing in the cafeteria where I work most times).

I love a curry, but my dad and a former co-worker of mine can't stand anything spicy.

How about a nice goat vindaloo?

Lookingglassman, any chance you're a Polack like my mom? If she even sees a speck of pepper in something she won't touch it.

I had some dahl once that was too chillie hot for me to eat. It stands out because that's the only time I've had something too hot. I usually eat quite a few jalapenos a day (which are not even hot to my taste). If I'm not having something with chillie flakes, sambal olek, fresh chillie etc.. on it them I'm covering everything in cracked pepper.

I am so SICK of co-workers/friends whipping up spicy dishes, insisting I "taste" them then get mad when I refuse. I have told these people countless times I do not like food with a "kick" to it or any hint of spiciness, yet they continue to pester me to try their latest creation.

I do not find spicy foods appealing. I do not like having my tongue burning while sweat beads break out on my forehead as a I wave my hand in front of my mouth and reach for a cool drink.

I want to enjoy my food and taste it, not suffer while eating it.

Anyone else here not a big fan of spicy food?

Awww. You're so white.

Stereotype much? I'm about as white as it gets and I can't get enough of spicy food.

Heck..I'm not white..I'm CLEAR and I love very Spicy foods...

Dear wife's from Brazil and can't stand black pepper on her Mac and Cheese...

It's easier.

by the way you're describing your food preferences one would imagine that seasoned mashed potatoes would burn your mouth :D

I love spicy food and eat spicy Chinese, Thai and Indian whenever I can. That said, I cannot imagine pushing it off on someone who doesn't want to eat it. Let alone get 'angry' if they refuse. I couldn't possibly care less what other people eat. I'll eat what I like and they can do the same.

Sounds like you have friends who are way too sensitive, because I really don't understand why anyone would get angry if a friend politely refuses to taste something.

Re: the ethnic discussion upthread: in England, it's the whites who like daring each other to eat the spiciest food more than the browns. :p :D

Just visit any curry house on a Friday or Saturday night and see who orders the vindaloos and phaals. And as someone with Indian heritage - albeit mixed-race - I like my curry medium at most (madras-level heat is my limit). I prefer spices to enhance flavour rather than overwhelm it. Still, I suspect that's going to be too spicy for the OP. :D

I live in Los Angeles and I eat quite a lot of Mexican food. I like hot salsa and jalapeno peppers -- up to a point.

In some parts of the USA, the spicier your food, the more manly you are....
When food is so spicy it becomes an endurance test or a measure of machismo, it's TOO DAMN SPICY.

Food should be enjoyed. If guys want to challenge each other's manhood, they can just compare dick sizes.

I love spicy foods. I love hot foods too. Grew up eating it - even my mother's meatloaf had a couple of jalapeños in it. Almost everything I cook is spicy. I feel horrible for the OP in that he's missing an enormous swathe of what's worth eating in the world.

On the other hand, I don't eat green or leafy vegetables, so I can't really judge. :shifty:

Maybe he's not actually that polite about it?

Or maybe they're just fucking with him. That would be my guess.

I wouldn't like black pepper on my mac and cheese either but that doesn't have to do with it being too spicy, it just tastes bad. :p

Can't say I'm keen on hot spices. A little spice, yeah. But not much. No vindaloo or phaal for this white boy!

:D

How many have had that first-time experience in a Japanese restaurant with putting way too much wasabi on their sushi, not knowing what it was? Comedian Rita Rudner said, "I actually saw my own nostrils!"

You mean the loud mouthed drunken townies who insist on calling every waiter "Raj"?

Calling waiters "Raj" is them on best behaviour.

Having said that, I'm probably being a bit harsh. Went out for a curry on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, and no problems witnessed. Beyond my teasing the Bangladeshis on Saturday for their loss vs Indian in the cricket, that is. :D

Mind you, the places I go don't tend to get the drunks, so...

I'm not a fan of spicy food. But in my case, it's not either like or dislike. Well, except for some Mexican dishes, and hot sauce. I have two medical conditions that keep me from eating it. I haven't had a pizza in fourteen years, and I miss it. The BBQ sauce from McDonald's is so spicy that I simply can't handle it. Too bad too, since I love BBQ sauce, and can eat the stuff from Chicka-Fill.

I just don't see how spice enhances the taste. My tongue burning does nothing to make my eating experience joyful.
Aside from burning the hell out of one's mouth, capsaicin also causes the release of endorphins, so it's also pleasurable. I find when I eat spicier foods, afterward I feel like I ate more than I actually did. It feels similar to how I feel after stuffing myself on Thanksgiving without eating anywhere near as much food.
