Vanguard book 3: Reap the Whirldwind is going for very high prices on Amazon. did this book go out of print or something? I ask becuase I'm thinking of picking these books up and wanted to know if I need to focus my search on the used market.
wtf? I just looked at amazon. Maybe it by the page, or the pound. Buy it used. I was able to get a package deal on all of them on ebay. Just keep looking.
Sigh. I've had to explain this before, and yet it never gets any less absurd. A production error resulted in the wrong ISBN code being linked to Reap the Whirlwind at some point along the way (I'm not sure if the number was wrong on the cover or in the Simon & Schuster database, or both.) The result is that it was impossible for retailers to order new copies of the book, which is ridiculous, because its sales were very good (or so I was told). I was told that the problem was fixed last summer, and for a very brief time the book was back in stock on Amazon, B&N, etc. Then the same problem recurred, and the print edition is once again conspicuous by its absence. And because of the numerous economically motivated layoffs at S&S since December 2008, there is no one left who who has either the will or the knowledge to fix it. If you think this is frustrating for you, the readers, imagine how I feel right now...
Oh, man, David, I am so sorry. That's really awful. I didn't know. On a another note, let me just mention that I am reading Harbinger for the first time and loving it. I think you really "get" TOS. From an old-timer, thanks.
Dammit. I intended to start getting caught up on Vanguard, and this is the next one I need. Sonofa... Edit: NICE! Chapters.ca has it in stock. ORDERED!
I will gladly shop my local Barnes&Nobles and Borders for this, and ship it, at cost. Priority Mail would be my preferred method. I picked up my copy there, but am now reluctant to part with it. If anybody wants me to look for it for them, send me a PM and I'll see what I can do.
...otherwise several sites do have the eBook version to purchase if you can cope with your eyes bleeding
I should be getting books 1-2, 4 in the mail this week. I'll let you guys know what I think after I've read them. Gonna look for 3 at the local used book places in town.
^ In the same boat. Got 3-5 in the mail this week too, and will probably get to them when I finish up Full Circle, hopefully this weekend...
Re: Star Trek Vanguard / New Earth A recall S&S trying to launch a New Earth series in the TOS era. I'm not sure what happened to it, but I imagine it didn't do well sales wise to warrant more issues? Vanguard seems to have come afterwards to try again to create a new TOS era series. This seems to be more successful. If all that is true, have any characters from the defunct New Earth series showed up in Vanguard or any other TOS novels over the last few years? Also, from a concept perspective, is Vanguard a TOS era DS9 whereas New Earth was more like TOS/TNG, e.g. ship-based?
Re: Star Trek Vanguard / New Earth New Earth was intended as a 6-novel miniseries. However, it concluded with Challenger, a "pilot" for a potential new series of that name. A second Challenger tale was part of the Gateways event, but evidently there wasn't sufficient incentive to continue it. Wrong timeframe. New Earth/Challenger was a few years before TWOK. Vanguard is before and during TOS. There are some superficial similarities, but the writers don't like that characterization.
Thanks Christopher for all the info. I meant to no disrespect about by Q re: DS9 and Vanguard. I imagine the similarities in premise are superficial as in they both take place or revolve around a station. Does Vanguard also have a starship associated with it? Do the tales focus on the station and some exploration by Starship?
Several. http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_Vanguard They focus on wherever the plots and characters may happen to take them. One thing it does have in common with DS9 is being an elaborate, serialized saga with a large, diverse cast and a sweeping focus. Actually it kinda has a lot in common with DS9, though it's also very much its own entity.
Not to completely hijack the thread, but I'm working on finishing up Open Secrets while I have a short pause between producing issues of the STARFLEET Communique for STARFLEET International. How many books behind does that put me now? I was thinking only Precipice and the shorts collection? Trying desperately to catch up on some stuff before Shore Leave, Karen
You're correct. Once you've read Precipice, you'll be ready for Declassified when it comes out in late June/early July.
Woo! I can't believe I'm almost caught up with one of the book series. This is just not possible. Karen
In preparation for Declassified I've decided to re-read Vanguard right through from the beginning. Reading all the books in succession makes me realise just how much I missed the first time around. David Mack, Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore really have done an excellent job co-ordinating the multiple stories and characterisations (James Swallow too, since his mirror versions still needed an air of familiarity). Kudos and other congratulations.
